Hiding fags under the counter?

Yet another attempt at telling us what is best for us.

Now I am a smoker and can understand non smokers saying this is a great idea but...where does this kind of thing end? dunno
Does this Government really think that hiding fags will stop kids from smoking? That is luducrious and madness to even suggest it. People are supposed to be 18 to purchase them and the only way they can buy them is either if a shop sells them or another adult buys them for the child.
Surely there should be more serious charges brought against people who either sell or buy fags for under age people. Hiding them away will only make them more sought after for kids than they maybe already are.
Will the next step be to hide drink under the counter, in case a child buys it? I feel it is another Monday morning brigade thing, where the idiot had nothing to do on Monday so thought up this madness.
Anything that can stop a child from starting to smoke is a great idea but....to hide them does not make any sense at all.
If the Government were really that bothered they would ban them but as we all know, they make too much money in tax from them. Hypocritical is a word that springs to mind.
Do others think this will make any difference at all, or do people think it will stop kids from smoking?
I thought that homophobia was now illegal ?
And here was me thinking it was either something about giving gay guys backache or a Section 28 protest
out of sight..out of mind..it doesn't cost anything..and if it simply stops ONE child from starting then it will be a great idea.
You lot can be so funny at times. lol
It is supposed to be a serious thread issue guys.
One comment that was made on the link.........
Drugs are not sold over the counter but that doesnt stop it being a major issue with youngsters!!!!!!
Out of sight and out of mind doesnt work there so what makes the government think it will be any different with fags??

I hide my fags under the counter too. I'm 35 and still hiding my ciggies from my mum! redface
I think if the kindergarten at Westminster were really serious about stopping the nations smokers then bans on all things smoking and smoke related would be in effect by now. The fact is that the revenue it creates means that there is a dissincentive to work at the problem. Also the fact that a place on the boards of the tobacco companies are still coveted
Mind you I still don't belive the smoking ban in pubs was a good thing so what do i know :lol
Where is the local shop going to keep its stash of harcore porn if they have to keep the fags under the counter confused:

I don`t understand why they don`t make them a prescription drug ....only available from Chemists...
Seems to work for all the other addictive drugs wink

That would suit me....
I got a pre payment certificate.... smile
Maybe they should start by banning all 'duty free' and 'booze cruise imports' so everyone has to pay ful price.
I'm sure more would quit then

Sure i said i was going to pack in when they hit £2 a pack...........i'm still smoking  lol
Don't think cost will stop us smoking
In edit......or drinking
Hmmm
They banned knives yet kids (and adults) still stabb each other
They banned guns yet they still shoot each other
Naa won't work

I hope so! I don't really care if cigarettes are kept under a counter from now on and the ban on smoking in bars is fine by me (I smoke) but I cannot understanding why the government demonises tobacco yet appears to actively support the promotion of alcohol consumption (e.g. minimal increases in the budget on drink prices compared to cigarettes, extended opening hours for drinking, continued TV advertising). Both have health risks to the person drinking/smoking as well as others around them, yet alcohol seems to be ignored for the most part.
Im moving to Switzerland, Its compulsory to binge drink and smoke everywhere there rolleyes
Wil it make a difference confused: I really dont know, but my concern is by making it under the counter it may just make it appear more cool to teenagers not less so
M8-me wrote about banning "duty free" fags.
All fags bought in euroland are DUTY PAID and in Spain are still less than half the price they are in this country (with freebies as well if you buy bulk !)
All this "allowances" bollocks off this government
is crap if they are for your own consumption.
This bloody government want it all there own way,
ALL of the time
L.B
Cant really see it making a difference tbh. People will always smoke regardless and the government cannot ban it completely without raising the tax from elsewhere (ie none smokers)
The smoking ban in pubs, I can live with, What isnt so nice is seeing a load of smokers stood outside a pub and none smokers having to walk through it just to enter the pub, It has not made the pubs have more custom i dont think

I live in so called "euroland" and there are border issues between France and Spain and France and Belgium where the tax on cigarettes is less. The French Duane regularly police the main tourist routes across the borders to Spain and Belgium and confiscate what the French authorities regard as in excess of "personal" consumption as well as imposing an "on the spot" fine.
Some much for a "common" market (a term which was abandoned years ago anyway!).
Doesn't affect either of us as we are both non-smokers anyway but the same rules apply to alcohol and our favourite gin comes from Spain
I think they should Ban cigarettes!!!

This kind of comment really pisses me off. You've already pushed smokers out of pubs so you can enjoy your smoke-free boozing, so ffs stop whinging about the smokers outside. If you don't like it, fuck off to another pub. Another thing that annoys me is non-smokers taking the sheltered seats outside that are meant for smokers. I find a lit fag-end "accidentally" dropped down their blouse/shirt soon shifts them.

I smoke myself!! and its more a complaint of smokers having no where else but the front door to smoke with many pubs
My apologies - I misconstrued your comments.

Well sorry thats such a shame, and I really do not give a toss if they have to walk past me, blame the health tossers in the civil service. The anti smoking lobby have all but made us " lepers " in society! Well I for one take great exception to that. I pay FULL price for my fags at 5 quid a packet, and most of that is tax.
For me to have to go outside to have a fag, after paying probably in tax on an item that is £5 is a scandal. They hide behind their smokescreens and say they charge so much, to try and stop people from smoking....it does not work that logic. They do it because they can, purely because of the billions they take in tax!
I am not supposed to smoke in my own company van, or in my works unit even though there are only three of us who work there, and we all smoke.
For a while people used to go abroad to get cheap fags but even then the customs would confiscate them if they thought you had too many, and made you feel like a criminal. I was not a criminal and if the Government charged a more reasonable ammount in tax, people would not bother going abroad.
I am sick and tired of the Government allowing supermarkets to sell lager at 30p a can, and for people to go out and get bladdered for a fiver, and cause havoc in society, but be a smoker and you might as well be a mass murderer.
I am sick and tired of paying my dues and then some NON smoker in Government with their own hidden agendas, telling me where and when to smoke. If they think that hiding fags under the counter will deter kids from smoking then they are on planet Zob. It will only make them more determined, as it will seem even more of a thing they want to do.
The pub trade is on it's knees a lot because of the smoking ban, ask any publican. The Government do not give a toss, they are now run by EU directives anyway. I will continue to smoke in MY unit and MY van, and they can all stick a packet of their fat cigars( which btw they can smoke in the Houses of Parliament )up their arses. Big Brother and a nanny state is exactly what we now have........shameful and disgusting.
They can hide them, up the prices, treat people like lepers but....people will still smoke, kids will still start no matter what they do. Unless they ban them which they never will, then by treating us smokers like scum is not the answer, and nor is ripping us off, by charging us a massive ammount in tax. All they are doing is paying lip service to their bosses in the big house, and saying they are doing something...oh they are, conning us. But in the end people will smoke no matter what, as people will drink.
Kids start smoking because they think it makes them look grown-up. Where do they get that idea from? Could it perhaps be the fact they see grown-ups smoking. The rationale being that grown-ups must know what they are doing so smoking must be okay. rolleyes
As for the whinging and whining about alcohol being treated differently, well as the old joke goes... you don't see drinkers in a pub pissing on each other.
As for smokers being 'lepers' in contemporary society, well great. They should be. You make a choice to smoke, I make a choice to not smoke. Unfortunately when you smoke you blow it into the air non-smokers use. That makes you selfish and uncaring about other people's choices. So if you have to stand out in the cold, tough, get thicker socks, or better still have the balls to quit and come into the warm with the rest of us non-smokers.
