whats the suggestions for books to read on the beach ?
just finished da vinci code..and like thrillers etc
i just got that one, and the new andy mcnab one, only read 15 chapters but its not all just about his sas missions its unfoldin pretty well, good book biggrin
No, no, no. NOT the da vinci code, its terrible! There are only three books which you need to take on holiday this year:
Saturday by Ian McEwan - quite the best book I've read in AGES
The Closed Circle by Jonathan Coe - especially if you read or saw the Rotters Club on TV
Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
trouble is, before summer hols start and I've read all of 'em. Any suggestions (along the lines of 'people who bought Jonathan Coe also bought...blah blah blah)
The da vinci code...
was certainly different .. i could not agree with you if you thought it was that bad
will put those on me short list for waterstones on saturday ..ta
Anything by Dean Koontz ..... I've read several of his books and always enjoy them.
The Revised Kama Sutra by Wishmaster is a thoroughly good read too... hehehe .... hold on .. ain't found a publisher yet.... pmsl
dont read the new harry potter book, sad i know did like the rest, read this one got it last tues finished by thurs and it was crap. nIf anyone wants a prece of what happens without having to read it pm me and i will let you know
Dean Koontz is a good read I must have read about 10 of his books and there has not been a bad one yet. As for the movie's made from his books there a bit cheap and not very well made. A real pity. Shaun Hutson is another good read in a simular vain as Koontz. And there is James Hurbat a true master.
Christopher Brookmyre, crime fiction with a wide streak of black humour, with a large Scottish influence. His writing has been described as thus..." Imagine the bastard child of Raymond Chandler, raised in the Billy Connelly household and schooled by Carl Hiassen." ( he is an American satirist - and a lot of people who have read both, reckon CB is the better of the 2 for British tastes)
I cannot praise him enough, truely enjoyable. PM me if you want a list of his books.
Try the new Parry Hotter book. Its quite good (some very amusing bits) but only if you've read the other 5.
Or anything by Clancy
Try reading 'Hotel Honolulu' by Paul Theroux One of the few books Tune and I agreed on. smile :) :)
Recommend any Ian Rankin, particularly the Rebus series, excellent crime novels very well written too.

That is true and when you see how diverse our tastes are - then it is a copper-bottomed recommendation.

Aah, a man after my own heart. Anything by Ian McEwan is classy modern literature. Atonement was my favourite of his but Saturday is a close second.
On the strength of that recommendation I shall check out your other two.
Having said that, for a light holiday read you could do worse than any of the Flashman books by George McDonald Fraser - well written and hilarious. The account of how Flashy caused the Charge of the Light Brigade still has me laughing after all these years.
Agreed that the Da vinci code is badly written and filched from some far better, more serious research.
Shit, I thought it was reviews on a holiday i n Reading
Not really what you would call thrillers
but I love John Grisham
cant put them down once i start reading one
anything by ian banks
gets me hooked every time......best being the crow road,,,,,,if you havent read it or seen it,,,,,have to do so :P
wel by the time i've trawled through the pap this lot post i can't be arsed with books, but i've been told the status quo memoirs are highly entertaining (unlike the music)
Try 'The Time Travellers Wife'.
Not a thriller, but an interesting and different read
Try
Solomon Time by Will Randell.
A fantastic book, a bit weird at times and you get slowly drawn into the language and culture of the islanders.

read about1/3 rd of it and gave up on it
could not get into it at all and i am a heavy reader
I'm lucky, in that I have the memory of a goldfish and therefore can reread books and still not remember the plot or ending. One that I am rereading for the umpteenth time at the moment is Day of the Jackal - excellent!

Its hilarous!!!
or anything by Bill Bryson.

You beat me to it, he's got to be the best author I've come across in the past five years. I've just lent 'A big boy did it and ran away' to a friend of mine who's just completed her first year as a teacher.
If you're looking for a page turner that's a laugh and a bit dark, there's an author called Carl Hiiason, his books only seem to reside at airports, which is useful for you. Try "Basket Case" for starters. All take place in the sleasy crime infested kick back environment of south Florida where the author was a crime reporter. I buy one for each trip and save enough of it for the flight back (not a good flyer).
Edit. Ha, funny or what, just looked at the post above and bugger me he's got a mention there too, what are the odds to that. I'll try the recommendation as well.

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it said "Holiday In Reading" (as in the Berkshire town where I live). I am relieved this was nothing more than a momentary lapse in concentration on my part!
Books to read on the beach eh? How about Jaws?
Hmmmm - doesn't that water look inviting!
