Ok so nothing to do with swinging - but forgive me!!
Have just finished watching the 2005/06 remake of The Fog - remember the Jamie Lee Curtis '70s film.
How disappointing - even the fog looked fake!!!
The original relied on suspense, and the thought of possible horror, but showed none - and because of that scared me.
The new 1showed supposedly horrid looking ghosts and people burning to death!!!
Really tacky.
Whatever happened to good old fashioned horror!!!
Anyway rant over!!
lol
i know the feeling wink
my kids are at the horror movie stage and its driving me nuts
school holidays only started for me on thurs and already weve had all 4 (or was it 5) freddy movies and they have to be the worst sad
not sure if you`d class these as horrors or thrillers.....but....hostel....the hills have eyes..and reeker........i love the B-movie kind of look to them............the daft amount of gore and was surprised...and i mean really surprised....that all three are really good stories with decent twists...which you only realise at the end!!..........by all means watch these three but plz have a sick bucket and a pillow next to ya to hide your eyes redface
ooooooo...all the freddies......until they got daft and one went 3d pmsl ......used to scare me something rotton....think it was the use of lullabies :eeek: ........also another i was really scared by when i was younger.........the fly .......

So I am not alone in my disappointment at the sad decline of the horror genre. Whilst it may be true that there have been of late a spate of gore-fest flicks (THHE2, Hostel, etc, etc) with more than enough splatter to satisfy the merely curious and the sensationalist, the actual horror film seems to have virtually disappeared. sad
Or have they...
Is it perhaps that our Ogrish tastes and curiosity and the uncensored availability have enabled those who are readily willing to be subjected to a constant bombardment of enough violent actualities to desensitise us to the point where nothing shocks us anymore? Even those not actively seeking such ogrish morsels are equally able to view actual documentary horror on news programmes every day.
Console games played by impressionable children and teenagers are often so violent in their depiction of crime and death resulting from violent crime that they carry the British Board of Censors 18 certificates; yet it appears that some children, below the statutory 18 years of age limit are allowed to play such games by their parents or at least, be allowed to play them unsupervised.
Television programmes have also pushed back the boundaries of what is acceptable to the point where programmes like Waking the Dead, CSI, ETA al can show illustrations of all kinds of violent crimes and the effects of the same so that we can take it in our stride.
We have become a society where violence and the effects of violence are taken for granted as being everyday occurrences and treated the same by the majority. Where war - the true horror waged upon society - is equally treated as "just another news event" and there is virtually no censorship of war correspondants reports.
As we get older we are exposed to more and more random acts of violence and horror via various media, including the cinema though sadly it would appear that it is not primarily the more mature cinema goers / viewers who have caused the apparent decline in the quality of horror movies. :(
That seems to be brought about by the shameless hunger of the youth of our society for more and more sensationalist horror / violence because of their earlier & earlier exposure and desensitisation and the even more shamelessly exploitive and cynical film producers hunger for the filthy lucre.
Films today go far beyond what is actually neccessary. Plots have become flimsy and unrealistic (even for horror / fantasy films). Characters are two-dimensional (at best) and tension is replaced by jerky, jolting mini-shocks and buckets and buckets of gore.
Originality is replaced by formulaic repetition and we are seeing more and more returns to past classics.
It seems that we have reached a point in horror films where we are no longer shocked unless the shock-event is so extreme it assaults our own sensibilites and innate sense of acceptability. But where do we go from here.......?
Like porno flicks, at first a woman masturbating was considered risque or racy but quickly HAD to be replaced by more racier man on woman sex scenes, then that was passe and penetration shots were required to keep the audience happy, then double penetration shots, then gang-bangs, anal, animals, etc, etc, etc, etc...
End of the horror film???
No, actually IMHO it is the end of the horror film audience.

Couldn't have said it better myself- desensitisation is affecting so many areas.
I don't really enjoy horror films per say. To be honest they give me nightmares so I avoid them! redface
Lets face it John Carpenter was a film god. His early low budget films The Fog, The Thing, Halloween, Assualt on Precinct 13, Starman were brilliant but in remaking them they forget what made them good.
In fairness JC hasn't made a decent film in ages either. My most recent fav Dog Soldiers (as seen on TV) it seems to capture that great B movie feel.
Dog Soldiers 2 will be out soon
in general, i don't like too many Hollywood films as they're just based on tried and tested formulas, almost guaranteed to give a certain level of investment return. the ususal small range of stars are wheeled out to take the main role and america is always right and just.
I much prefer to watch french or german films and more recently new zealand/aussie films as the relatively low budgets hones the skills to produce good solid content and story over an excess of flashy effects.

Oooo what was that German film where the 'prisoners' were allowed to take control of the prison - with dire consequences?

Woo Hoo......I LOVE Dog Soldiers. OK the Werewolves aren't particularly realistic, but it is soo funny
"Where is Spoon?"
"There is no Spoon!"
As well as being full of suspense and genuinely scary.
I really enjoy 28 days later too.
Japanese Horror manages to terrify me everytime - even the American version of The Grudge......the wailing, cat like noise the ghosts make *shudder*.
Battle Royal was another one that had me on the edge of my seat, watching it with my hands in front of my eyes - very violent, but powerful. I bought Battle Royal 2 a few months ago, but haven't psyched myself up to watch it yet lol.
As for American films......they do just seem to follow a formula too much. Although I did really enjoy Saw and Saw 2, and didn't get the twists until the end, but I will be very suprised if they manage to make a third without it being predictable.

Favourite moment from Dog Soldiers - Sean Pertwee sittting on the toilet, telling the werewolf to go away.
An old fav is NIght of the Demon. Good stuff even with the strange cheap monster at the end.
