How can we encourage people to post?

I'm not a "newbie" as I have been a member for quite some time but although I am a regular reader of the forum I am a (very) occasional poster. I have been deterred from posting due to the reasons Jaymar cites above, which although have always been present, seem to occur with increasing frequency these days. As a consequence, I only post on the more frivolous threads as I really couldn't be arsed to be drawn into any sort of confrontation that some people seem to revel in.......life's too bloody short!!

I agree but I really do think that it has been better lately.
Sometimes it is quite easy to form a jaundiced opinion, quite justifiably, but then later to miss the fact that things have improved just because yer convinced it's bad.
I, for one, look forward to Mar coming back to full flow and for people like you to feel it is better too.

To be honest, I think things have actually got worse of late. I don't have any problem with heated debate but there now seems to be a tendancy for certain people to personally attack others and attempt to stop them from posting their views......a fact that is a damn site more insidious than the views they are attempting to censor.

I tend to post in a not too serious manner but there are certain people on here who no matter what people post,they read between the lines and make up their own meanings to the answers.~
Sometimes it might be better if you know those folks are going to post ,that you just place a blank post in your name and they can add to it what they think you are going to say lol

I post when I feel like it or if I feel I have something to add to a debate.
People post when they want to .....that is what forums are about. You can't make people post. Forums change, but that is not a bad thing.

There are quite a few reasons why I havn't been posting much of late. Time is at a premium as real life has been definitely at the forefront and taking precedence over everything else. There does come a time in everyone's membership I feel when you have seen and answered just about every question there is to ask on a forum about sex or otherwise and rather than inform people of the search button 6 times a day I prefer to keep the way clear for people who want to answer it constructively. We may have seen it before but the new people who are talking to each other in these threads are, like we did forming friendships through these posts. I don't like the nit picking, I don't like digs and I don't like having links to the newspapers shoved under my nose everyday...I don't buy them for that very reason. This is NOT a dig at anyone who does that either..it's just not my thing, but I don't come and complain about it. Also every thread seems to be a question...what would you do?, what would you say?, do you think?, etc etc I sometimes feel like I'm being asked to take part in a survey when I come in the cafe lol

I won't leave this site and will probably post prolifically once again, but just not at the moment.

One guaranteed way to stop me posting is to "persuade" me to post! lol

I hate feeling like I have to post, like I'm not a valid member if I don't post. That, to me, is utter rubbish. There are many many people, on all different sites, who don't post regularly...or post a lot then have a break...or whatever. I don't justify why I don't post, 'cos there's nothing really to justify. It's my choice.
I lurk quite often now, on all the forums I'm a member of. If I have something to say, I'll say it.:lol: Quite often I don't have anything to say. I just read the forums most of the time.
In my opinion, you can't force the site to be busier or cater for everyone. Some people may like how it is now, some don't.
All forums/sites have a natural cycle. Things usually pick up and then in 6 months or so, someone else will do a thread similar smile

I know what you mean and I think the only difference is that we are talking different timescales.
I agree things got much worse over the last 3-4 months up and until about 4 weeks ago. But things have got better since then.
I guess it depends on how frequently one looks in.

My view is that some people don't really want to be encouraged. There are a few sites of different natures that I visit and it seems the same wherever you go. You get a few that post, chat and most don't.
Of the ones that do want to post, a warm, friendly atmosphere is a good start, by all means debate about subjects but don't let them get personal because that's the bits people tend to read more.
Me, personally, I posted alot last year, but this year ive had sooooo much stuff going on at home that I just havent been in the mood to post. I keep in touch with things and use other parts of the site but only post when I feel like it.
The only thing that would encourage me right now would be the promise of a .................... wink

Word of mouth is always the best way to encourage participation, if you enjoy the forum tell people.
We could put all sorts of other rules in place about how people should and shouldn't act, but that wouldn't encourage anyone to join in, I think the AUP covers most things.

I was chatting about the forums in the chatroom last night and so many people didn't know they were here.
They were asking why the room was a forum chat room.
Some people just come in and go straight into chat without knowing these are here, I admit I was one of those people for about 9 months until someone told me about them.
