i rememeber when i had only just started school.. would have been about 4 i guess, and it was sportsday... my dad promised me that if i won the egg and spoon race i could have a pound!
i cheated and los evil t... but eventually he gave in and let me have it anyway :P .
anyway.. thats irrelivent to this thread.. what i was going to say is that he gave me an option of a pound coin or a poind note! i remember spending ages not being able to chose... its the ONLY time i ever remember having a pound note in my life.. i think they must have gone out of circulation close to that time.
Congrats WBB, you have just destroyed any hope of feeling young for those here who still remember the shilling! rotflmao

Suprised by the poll results so far i thought 35 to 44 would be the main age group but it does seem i'm in the largest age group.

240 pennies in a pound
a half crown was a decent amount of pocket money
I could take the lemonade bottles back to the off licence on a sunday morning and get money for them.
Our first colour television
eight tracks
going down to Rumbelows to buy the latest number 1 for 25p
when no one had fitted carpets that reached the walls of the room
stairs with stair rods that were functional not decorative.
two tone suits
crombies and loafers
go-carts made out of scrap wood and pram wheels
a larder
petrol at 25p per gallon...yes gallon not litre
a pint of beer at 11p (could get merry on a £1 and still buy a box of matches)
5 records on a pub jukebox for 10p
platform shoes in light blue with dark blue stars on them and a 4 inch heel...yep I thought I looked great.
party sevens
ahhhh the list goes on for someone who is..............bugger I'm old!!

I remember most of these things, you must be the same age as me Davej. I think however you forgot to mention 'the Blackouts' back in the 70s. For those of you that were only a twinkle in your fathers eye, these were country wide cuts in electric power caused by several crisis' due to miners' strikes and later a crisis in the middle east. They took place in the early to middle 1970s and would last for about 4 hours at a time in the evening as a measure by the government to save fuel. I remember we had hurricane lamps and parrafin heaters and this was the autumn or winter when this happened. It was fun though! A lot of people would not be in existence today if it wern't for those blackouts - can you guess why? wink
And dont forget they issued petrol coupons again...............
 I've just realise that WBB and Lou, probably did this in their history lessons at school
Oh to be young again..........where's that fairy godmother when you need her.
Just voted fer the first time - so I thought I'd bump 2 things up - this thread and the average age by about 3 years!! lol
 I'm not in the first category anymore wink
Yep, I've changed category, too.

Well, it would have been smooth if
a) I had not posted my age towards the top of this page, last year and
b) Turning 18 would not make one change categories.
Still, the sentiment was there, I s'pose.
lol
you just can't please some women! well maybe not with words ;)

I agree - definitely suprised.
I would have thought that the 35-44 & the 45-54 Groups would be fairly even but would definitely be the largest.
Very interesting.
I guess it could be down to who actually bothers to vote and might not actually be a true representation of the ages of people in the forum.
wink

Maybe some of the real wrinklies can't vote coz they are at work........... or is it just that they have to warm up the arthritic hands before they can type ?. maybe the nurses wont let them on the PC ?

Total Votes : 138 - not a bad sample.
I'm in the biggest group at the momnet 25-34 (but only by the skin of my teeth!), and I too am surprised that the bulk of the distribution isn't lower down. Come on ya wrinklies, get voting :lol2:

I've voted - but I admit I ain't too happy about admitting to 30 yrs and 8 days. mad It was easier to admit publically  , yesterday to grey hairs   ( not "sun-bleached" as I have professed to having for the last 3+ years ) and snoring like "rutting warthogs" ( which I am secretly proud of rolleyes lol  )
