When I went for my 'cod piece' the tailor measured inside and outside, that top and bottom, tailoring terms you know. Then he measured width and girth. Told me padding was in this season and advised earth colours, perhaps brown with green piping. Two fitting later I picked it up, only to find the stitching split when I saw a lady. Had to nip into a high street for a ready made only to find the same design a tenth of the price. It has served me well for years. No matter how much measuring you do it is the fit that counts.
