I think there are some folk who have a forum persona and others who are true to themselves and type as they are.
Yes, people's style of posting does put me off at times. I don't like the way a fair number of people post, if I'm honest, but then I'm not daft enough to assume that people don't think the same about me.
I think there are posters who want people to like them, who try to be all things to all people; there are others who want people to dislike them, who actively seek to wind others up. I don't particularly like either type.
But then, if we were all the same this place (as in 'real life') would be dull.
I have met plenty of forumites and been completely surprised at how different they are from their posts. I have also met people who are exactly the same as I had envisaged because of their posts.
I think it is worth bearing in mind that people can search all your posts on here when they check your profile and yes, at times, they can be revealing. I take it all with a pinch of salt though. Computer-mediated-communication loses so many nuances as it is not a face-to-face medium.

The forums of course can lead people to think they know someone by the way they post.
Everyone knows me and how I post, I make no secret of that and make no appologies at all for the very way I post.
I upset some but there are a lot who agree with my views, it is called having differing opinions.
I get angry on here, it makes me laugh on here, and it can on occasion make me rather sad too.
People who REALLY know me would be suprised at some of the things I write on here, as in the real world I tend to keep my opinions more to myself.
I admit I am not a lover of the ban the newspaper brigade, or the lefties who want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, no matter what they have done. I have seen a few on here and they come and go, while I remain....by the skin of me teeth admin might say.
Love what I write or hate what I write, but ya can't ignore what I write, and that is how it should be.
I have had a few spats on here with a few people, but there has only ever really been one person who I cannot stand with a passion, and a couple of others that got under my skin a tad. But hey it is no different on here than out in the real world.....no?
Oh and Kaz....whilst I think you are a lefty Liberal tree hugger, ya ain't all bad girl.

:rotflmao:im in one of nolas categories...i want to be liked by everybody, and I try really hard to treat other posters how I would like to be treated myself....and thats purely to do with me and my psyche (and issues I have - it severely upsets my mojo if I have a hint people dont like me....I'd much rather they come out and say it) probably in my attempts at that I get up peoples noses quite a lot...which makes me kinda sad...and I guess defeats the object somewhat!
Forums are like a microcosm of life all in one small place...but people can be who they want to be on here, and could be here for a long time without ever revealing the true 'them' I suppose.
There have certainly been plenty of characters Ive seen come and go...the dear Peanut to name but one!

It`s just about the only ploy that is completely unprovable and is a rather low attempt to push buttons
As to knowing people ....I think it`s much easier to "know" people if you chat regularly to them in the chatrooms......there is less time to think and real character is evident within a short space of time.
Getting to know people in the forums is trickier...
A combination of the two will give you a fair estimation of somebodies real character, but it takes time
As someone who types so slowly and reads even slower and STILL misunderstands my own posts due to lesdixia I cant keep up in chat, I have a feeling Im never going to be truly "known" through the written medium.
Mind you, I think I do tend to take a long time to let people under my skin in life as well, and can probably count on one hand people who truly know me, so perhaps the way I write is just a taste of who I am. (that handful are a couple I play with, plus my former boss, who gave me so much succession training I later became his boss... , my brother and my best friend who I have known since I was 3)

Ive had 3 all within the last few months, then my posting rate is higher now than it has ever been so might make sense.
I wouldn't pretend to know anyone from there postings on here, actually having met people proves that point to me. Over 80% of communication is lost by not having face to face contact so all you really learn here is peoples positions in life. I have people whos positions in life I dont like but I like them if you can understand that. Then I have people whos positions are almost identical to mine but I cant stand them. Cue jokes about sexual positions
What anyone writes here wouldn't stop me talking to them if its good it might mean I seek them out more but if its bad I would just see how they are in real life.
As for me I post what I want when I want and as in the case of real life I really dont care what people think about me.

There are two people who know me very well on here even though they haven't known me anywhere as long as their real life friends. They are both women and they are both very different to each other but they are both very insightful.....and I luff them both.
There are others however who I think I know really well and then they go and surprise me with a post so I'm not as insightful I suppose....

Would you know your school friends now, and how have you changed since then.
As for myself, there are those I have met and and found me different from my persona in the forum. Not far removed but they have seen more of the person than the poster.
Finally a japanase proverb

and one they show only unto themselves
That last face you will never know.

i would love to get to know everyone on here better i do not believe having differing opinions to me makes someone a bad person
the man i have been married to for the last 21 years has vastly differing opinions to me yet i love him immensely and is a fabulous person will do anything for anyone yet i know if he posted regularly on here he would get a lot of peeps backs up just because he has some strong opinions that lots wouldn't agree with, i know i don't, yet that does not make for a bad person in fact he is a very good person wether this is why i never judge people on their opinions i do not know but i do know we are only human and all have flaws
some might infuriate me from time to time but i would still give them the time of day if i met them and be very happy to flap gums over a cuppa
