A great loss, but as you say, it would be hard to imagine him just drifting away...

Don't know anything about him. Was he suffering from a terminal illness?

Google is your friend ! If he was suffering from a terminal illness he didn't tell anyone.
One of the truly insightful writers/journalists of the last 40 years
RIP
What a man ! Great respect, the guy invented a whole new category of journalism, one of the few worthy of respect in a profession that's full of editorial yes men. Great shame.
Veejay, if you've ever done more than smoke but not inhale, or taken anything stronger than aspirin, then do yourself a favour and pop across to Amazon and order the book. It's way, way more entertaining than the film (forget that!). If you don't find it funny I'd be amazed, given that you're posting here I guess you must be a fairly broadminded guy biggrin
Remember laughing myself hoarse the first time I read Fear and Loathing, his writing just hit the button for anyone who's ever been 'there' wink
Will be sadly missed, but as you say, it's hard to imagine him dying of something natural.
Infact, I'm more surprised he didn't die younger....
RIP,HST.
Better to burn out than fade away.
Indeed, a sad loss. His contribution to literature and his gonzo journalism has influenced many others and he will be cited as an important writer of the 20th century, hereafter.

A great icon
i wonder if the AUP will be suspended temporarily so we can discuss his work in detail.
i absolutly adored "fear and loathing" just a shame that two of americas best writers, him and arthur miller... die within weeks of each other.....
HTS did some writing on a sports site i fequent a lot and to see how sharp and witty he was writing gave me a pleasure and a passion......

Think he suffered from terminal insight.
Saw right through the "American Dream"
there with Kerouac.
Guess in the end he couldn't handle the shit.
