Don't see many milkman about nowadays.

I`ve still got a milkman, thank God. The last thing on my mind would be getting milk every day, especially as I live out in the sticks and getting into town to the nearest shop is a bit of a treck!
Going through this a bit further, and I dont know if this was just in my area of the country ( East Dorset) but I can remember the "Bettaware" man coming round with a van full of hardware and cleaning products and him giving us children minature tins of polish which I assume were free samples. I can also rememberthe local corn merchants bringing chicken corn and the British Railways Scammell Mechanical Horse delivering parcels from Wimborne station when they were short of other lorries.
I still rely on wood for most of my heating as I get the wood for free but its getting more difficult for me to cut the wood up since I had my heart attack, so I`ll have to get a bit more mechanised!

smile Coincidence.
The local council that we suffer up here in the north have just had a large tree feld at the rear of our house stating it was a hazard. (I objected).
Talking to the chaps who took it down, I found out that the wood was sold down in Devon and on the IOW/CI's because it is in short supply. confused:
Hope you stay warm on our tree that done us no harm. lol

Deffinatly not the wood that I am burning, I know where mines come from. But your tree that had to come down - due to insureance and the blame/sue culture that we are now in, my employer (county council) have invested in some clever kit which is showing an alarming amount of trees which look healthy but in reality are on their last legs. The National Trust are also using this equipment to test the trees at Badbury Rings (local beauty spot) and have felled several "healthy" beeches that are in very poor shape. Perhaps your tree fell (sorry!) in this catagory.
