I know that we have just Christmas, and i'm sure that the last thing most of you are thinking about is your summer holidays. confused
For those of you who know a bit about me, you'll know that i am now on my own with my 2 just teenage kids. So i'm relatively skint, on my own, 2 kids, and sooooo looking forward to some kind of summer break with them. :bounce:
I know i'm not the only single parent out there, so was hoping that you might have some suggestions on a half decent break which isn't going to break the bank. Also, am hoping that someone might be able to advise on where to go with activites or whatever to keep us all amused.
I know its months and months away, but the financial side of it is forcing me to look at it now rather than wait and not be able to afford it at all. I do really want it to be successful for all of us, since it will be the first holiday on our own.
Looking forward to some really good ideas. lol
Lots of love, hugs and kisses

Cornwall is nice, although I'm biased! if you like camping give that a go, and find a small campsite near the sea on the north coast. get the kids a cheap wetsuit each and leave em on the beach, or take bikes. there is a load of stuff down there like the eden project too and its nice and warm.
that assumes you're not wanting to go abroad, in which case somewhere like spain is good and cheap (probably cheaper than any uk destination)
Hi there, how about collecting the holidays from the Sun newspaper. I've been told they are really great fun. I think they started advertising this week for them. Wherever you go have a great time XX
I *think* some holiday sites do special deals for Single parents, I`ll see if I can sort out some links.
Do you have anything in mind? Abroad, caravan/camping sites, something educational?
I find a site somewhere near a fossil hunting site is very rewarding, but then I`m a geek like that!

I meant `I`m` another one who can`t read, `I`m` ok, gonna stop now before I hurt myself  ]

The sun holidays are great value and they now offer some really decent sites, including sites abroad. You can do a three night weekend or four night midweek, it is also possible to collect two lots of tokens (which started today) and have two holidays together!
Normally the Sun have links on their web site to the sites they are offering. Worth having a look!
Quick word of warning Little. I took my kids away by myself for the first time last summer and I hated it sad Hardly anybody would speak to me and I spent an awful lot of my holiday very upset by people's attitudes. There were one or two exceptions to this so by the end of our week I did actually have 2 really nice (childless) couples to sit with at night, but there was one particular day when it had been raining and I was totally blanked by several people that I tried to strike up conversations with.
I swore then that I'd never take the kids away on my own again. I never quite got to the bottom of why it was like this, but my theory was that the majority of the female halves of the couples saw me as some kind of threat and therefore wouldn't speak to me. Even the couples who DID bother to speak to me agreed that this was probably the case.
The kids had a fantastic time because obviously the other children there didn't have the same prejudices their parents did, but whilst I didn't begrudge them enjoying themselves, it meant that I spent 5 nights out of 7 sitting alone in the bar :(
Sorry to put a dampener on it, but if you wanted to go on a joint holiday with me and my kids I'd certainly consider it lol
maybe lots of swingers and kids could go away together?
be company for you all and the kids, and entertainment would be 'on tap' as it were lol

I wouldn't take it personally, a lot of people go on hols for some peace and quiet and therefore don't talk to anyone at all. I don't even talk to strangers at home to be honest, but that's just me. I have noticed (no offence meant, just observation) that it tends to be people from further up the country that like to chat on hols, southerners are just less friendly I guess biggrin
it also depends on the type of place you go to as to how chatty people are.
if either of you want to take me on hols I'll come and keep you company
If you can manage it now, Haven have half price holidays available still. Or there are the Sun holidays which are very reasonable, although mostly off peak so you can't guarantee the weather. It depends what you are after I guess.
If you google Single Parent Holidays there are lots of sites with suggestions too.
You know that Sun idea could really be put to good use here. Many of us find it difficult to get to Munches and find childcare, let alone afford them, and I`m sure I`m not the only one here who could use a break.
I know that the token collection from the sun cannot guaruntee when you would end up at a particular site, but I`m sure if enough of us collected, some of us would overlap. I`d love the idea of some adult company in the bar after the kids have gone to bed (Mars aside of course), as all too often when we have been on these sites, we end up posting the kids to this club and that, tidying up in the interim, and still feel like we need a holiday at the end of it all!
An idea to toy with perhaps?

We are collecting the Sun tokens again, we have been on a number of breaks with them and they have been brilliant value. The only let down was the Pontins site at Southport, what a scuzzy place that was  . The chalets were being done up but of course, which ones did they give the Sun token collectors?? Yes, thats right, the ones that hadnt seen a makeover since WW2 i think confused
Having said that, all the other sites (Southern Englands ones) have been superb, brand new caravans with 3 bedrooms etc. Definately worth risking the money we'd say.
I got a brochure the other day which was brilliant for kids and adults.."key camps" they specialise in camping holidays also mobile homes which are brilliant, plus kids under 18 go free..you can go to France in August for under inclusive of ferry do discount for single parents..definately worth having a look. Think they also do discount if your a member of Gingerbread .
Good Lick x
Have been on a couple of the sun holidays when the kids were little. Excellent value.
What's the chances of us all booking a holiday at the same site? Excellent company all round for everyone.
G & D x
Just had a peek at the Gingerbread site and they are doing free membership and you get a discount booklet from them for holidays and days out.
ive got a tent ........
for when im skint
the kids love it
Yep camping every time - although Mr Teenager only thinks it's cool to camp at festivals now
'Look, lovely wildlife and nature!' (Me)
'And?' Mr Teenager (AKA Kevin)
I've taken my two around travelling with me loads in this country and to very far flung places but one of the most exciting times for them was at Cleethorpes (yeah I know) with the old metal framed tent. Such fun holding on to it all night for fear of it blowing away! (not)
Other than that my plan for this year is to book three bargain flights, buy lonely planet for chosen place and bobs yer uncle. Bite the bullet and do it! There's nothing more exciting than an adventure and if you are excited too the kids will be in their element!
That's if I ever stop 'munching' long enough to get a week in lol

Thankyou so much you lot !!!
Some fantastic ideas, and i do feel i might be buying the sun for the next few days !!!!!!!!!!!
Is it possible that we could arrange something like a SH holiday for all us single mams and dads ???? Sounds like a damn good idea to me. The thought of spending my time away and having a really awful time like Angel is just not a good thought, and in view of Angel's experience, would really love to avoid it !!!!!!!
Had a look at the web site of the Sun and, you can (if i have read it properly) put the two breaks together and get yourself a full week !!!!
Any more ideas would be appreciated though, keep em coming !!!!!!
Lots of love, hugs and kisses

Well I'd certainly be up for it Little. I was so looking forward to that holiday, but when I came back and complained about everyone's attitudes, loads of people said they knew other single parents who'd had the same problem. They could have warned me about that when I was saving all year for the damned holiday rolleyes

Its not what you do that will keep your cherubs entertained but the fact you do it with them. Find some national trust sites and pack a picnic. If you can spring a bit for a kite, (finger kites are only a couple of pounds) Bring a few of their friends too. A day in the sun with their mum and friends will give them memories that will last a life time.
If there are some other parents in the area, one thing we do is share days, so if one parent has a wading pool, then one day descend on them and bring some munchies and a bottle of wine for the mums.
Sleep overs can be fun too, but make sure you do it with a group of friends, so you can get a night off as well.
BBq's are also great fun especially if you have the time to make a few games. One that we enjoy is the velcro paddles and the soft ball that you can throw back and forth. Once again, invite other people but ask them to donate a dish so the expense isn't as bad as it could be.
I recently started a 1000 piece puzzle with my 2. it was a 'Lord of the Ring' one and the kids and I worked on it every night. it also give the perfect opportunity to spend some time with your babes, but it doesn't force anyone to talk. Oddly though, kids will open up and just natter away and you will have the perfect evening.
My daughter and I recently made a Bratz doll house out of a coffee maker box. Im actually pretty impressed. We made a door and glittered EVERYTHING and she loves it. It took us longer to make it than she actually played with it, but I've been given the gypsy's warning not to throw it out and it now has pride of place in my lounge. Kinda gives me a warm fuzzy inside.
Keep the ideas coming folks, we really should seriously get together and do some sort of organising. lol
