what songs/tunes do you only have to hear the first 1, 2 or 3 notes (and no more) and you know instantly what it is?
I ask cos ive just hear the first note of the Madness song 'shut up' and knew just what it was.....made me think of the some of bland rubbish thats out there now, that you couldnt even name, if you had the CD cover in front of you (I almost typed the album 'sleeve' in front of you - but then that would have alerted people that I wasnt in my 20's LOL lol lol )
oh...Tiffany....think we alone now....I only need one note..and I'm there on the dance floor !!!
This can be confirmed by anyone that regularly attends the midlands socials.. lol
A current example is the number by Paloma Faith (sorry, cannot recall the title)
Plim
The chord at the beginning of hard days night which is 6 notes really I spose but unmistakeable.
The first note to Welcome to the Jungle, Guns n not heard it for years and still knew it in the first note. Ah they aint what the were. Maybe cos they aint who they were lol
house of pain, jump around. love that song

There was some rubbish in the 60s and 70s as well. We tend to look back with too much nostalgia at times. Yes, Smooth Radio and others play what was good from the period, but I'm sure that in 40 years time there will be a radio station playing what was good from the early 2000s, although I will not be around to hear it!

I was thinking about this subject the other day on a 4 hour drive home, there was only awful dance music on radio 1  so I put radio 2 on ( shock looks I now can see from peeps who know what I love to listen too biggrin)
And there was a thing about british song writers.. they played many tracks that I recognised within a couple of notes.. made me think what an amazing thing our brain is to hold this information!!!
And in answer to the original question...
The River... Springsteen... Instantly recognizable, the hairs on back of my arms go on end instantly
November Rain - Guns n Roses.... same as above...
I could now go on about music all afternoon...lol but had better go do the school run biggrin

November Rain yes me too! Its funny how hearing certain songs can instantly transport you back to where you were at the time and how you felt about things. I had to go and listen to it on Youtube just now. Thanks for that minxy biggrin

I agree there was some real crap in the 60s & 70s too but it seems it was maybe only 25%, whereas today it seems to be closer to 75%. In evidence i give you RAP banghead
Anything by Queen, Simply Red, Elton John and a few other purveyors of rancid blandness, i recognise them by the third note and hit the off button before the fourth note wink
