I will give you that calling a woman a c*nt is an insult. It reduces her to just that and infers that the rest of her body, her mind and personality is no more than a support system.
However if Bob calls Eve a 'tart' is that an insult. If so is the insult in the word, or is it the mind of Bob or the mind of Adam who hears it?
to be meant as an insult the question would have to be what was the intention of the speaker .... to be taken as an insult the only question is about the words definition.

In my formative years in South London, 'tart' can be used without any derogatory implications at all. It is the equivalent of 'geezer' for a man.
Hence, nowadays I still use these terms for men & women & people are aghast at my political incorrectness.
Like I care!!! lol

The word may have a definition, but it is our own use and experience that gives it meaning to us. So is it possible to speak a word that is defined as insulting by many without insult.

That's why no decent bloke would Travis. I certainly wouldn't.
Would you?
No, of course not...
No I do not, but once I did use an India word instead of woman. My mistake was pointed out and I did not do it again.
I agree with the C word, it's not nice in any context, even a dirty one confused
Using the word 'tart' could be taken in a few ways so it depends on the way it was said. Calling someone a tart in a derogatory way is not good but used as a joke, it's nothing personal. I'm proud to be a tart :smug:
just wish I had the opportunity to prove it :?

I was born and raised in South london and the words you describe are often used quite jokingly ie:you silly c**t or your such a tart. Horrible as it may seem to people who dont like or are not used to hearing these words they are used quite often, but it all depends on the tone in which people use them. It also applies to alot of words which are not considered politically correct, the meanings can change depending on which context you use them.

the meaning of the communication is the response it gets.
i call dek a c*nt (and loads more things) wen he subjects me to led zepplin does that count confused: :?: :?: :?: trying to think of a work that will stop him listening to it while im there fuse maybe biggrin
Been called a tart loads to which i reply "yeah but a good one": also been slut, whore, dirty bitch, filthy cow, etc..... (mostly by dek in the middle of something surprised ) none of which i take personal or get upset by, but it depends on the context of conversation at the time, on the other hand it can be the simplest of words that upset you, in chatroom recently in a no wispering room this man wispered me so like i always do i cut and paste in the room because i turned him down (he really didnt think to check profile first) i got the nice reply of "fook of faty" a simple playground revenge trick but harsh all the same. do these people not realise that not only is a bann heading there way but also the others in room make mental note to stear clear from them. so it really does them no favours at all mad :x
So is a word an insult in one 'tribe' and just normal in another?
Should I pick my word more carefully when not among friends?

do you want me ?
when you say is calling a woman a c**t an insult ...
do you mean like as in calling a woman a cab in chivalristic attempt to procure her transport for the evening...
so are you implying that one would, in fact,by that act, be disempowering her and one should leave a woman to call her own cab or c**t or whatever????
Where do you get c**ts from anyway(the taxi rank???) ...and do they cost much ???

I think that is pretty much the case.
I wouldn't go into work and say "hello c**ts" to everyone, but on bike rallies and that, if I get greeted "hello you old C" in the pub, it's taken as a term of endearment!
Strange world isn't it? biggrin
Oh just while we are on the C word, why is it universally believed that nearly all women detest hearing the word, even in a jovial and friendly context? Afterall, it is just a collection of letters, much like f**k, which seems almost socially acceptable in many respects. dunno

Fuck is an act, cunt is a part of the body.
If one of your work pals said to another "Herts is a prick" would that be an insult to herts.

Calling anyone a cab, could be a favour, but tell a woman she must take a cab is dis-empowering her. I will give favour to many women, but do not think it dis-empowering until choice is removed.

Some may be friends, some may not be so if you are bothered on the whole about how it would be recieved probably best not to use the word.

How does calling someone something reduce them to that?
I have been called a c@nt loads of times but i have never been reduced to one.
Who cares, if your calling someone a name, then obviously you dont like them, so why worry!!
Den ( maz makes me write this now, so people dont think its her thats being a c@nt!)
