The Norton I had for free is about to expire so I want a good (free) one
It has a habit of talking to you in the middle of the night, but other than that it's quite light on resources (far better than any Norton post 2002) and seems to work better for me than AVG.
Of course, just because it's as good (if not better) than Norton doesn't mean Norton will let go of your system willingly. If you do change AV, it's best to run one of the Norton AV cleaners first as the damned thing leaves traces in every nook and cranny.

Its our third year with norton firewall and antivirus, worth every penny so far, nothing gets through and it cleans and defrags the system quickly.

Norton in my experience and a lot of peeps (including computer engineers) I know is nothing but trouble. Especially on adult and chat sites.
It takes up so much of your system resourses and slows your computer down especially if your computer is more than a couple of years old.
I use AVG free, windows firewall, with spyblaster as my firewall for spyware and spybot as my spyware catcher.
Not one of these cost me money and work as well if not better than Norton or Macafee

It's not too bad for a freebie, it scans regularly, the firewall's good and I get automatic updates free too 
I use norton AV2002 and it is also up. I now have an original oem version of Norton AV 2007 off my mate who uses McAfee so didnt want it. Npw being a norton user for so long i wont be changing just updating.
There are lots of free AV packs out there and are excellent but if you have no problems and are happy with what you use why change it ? Just renew or upgrade to the latest one be it free or cost.

AV really is an area you must not skimp on for getting adequate protection. Sure, you can get freebies and there are lots of them out there but would you trust a bundle of condoms from an unknown source 
We make (part) of our living out of sorting out the mess when clients have not had adequate AV software and have been attacked.
McAfee and F-Secure are good stable products worthy of recommendation. Both are used in a professional environment where it really DOES matter that you get it right.
I would strongly advise you think carefully about this.

Uhm, why pay for something that has a pretty poor review on most respected sites when you can get a free quality product that will serve you better?
AVG gets my vote every time.
Incidentally, if anyone is looking for a reliable good quality firewall, Comodo ( ) gets top marks on a number of security site reviews, over and above ZoneAlarm (free or pro) and Norton products.

Zonealarm as firewall
firefox browser to avoid popup and other IE related holes
Thunderbird email to avoid Outlook holes
spybot and adaware for those other little annoyances.
All works great, never had a problem.
Main thing to say is, don't click on any attached file in email unless you're very sure what it is and be very careful what you click on in web pages and pop-ups if you're unlucky to get some.

well jaymar have just installed it on all of our pc including house mates and it's fairly simple to use no thrills AV found a trojan on house mates pc which norton had missed

One thing not mentioned in the previous posts, remember (FREE) can allow you to be attacked but will find the problem and allow you to fix it, (PURCHASED) stops the problem before it starts.
Another good all-round maintenance & fix program that is Free is Fix-it Utilities 5 available at

i had problems with my computer about 2 years ago with virus' and the like so i got given the advice to put on different software... and everyone i spoke to then recommended AVG...
I am a convert from Nortons and Macafee......
I have Zone Alarm as my Firewall......
AVG, Adaware, Avast on as spyware
Also have Spybot search and destroy, and CWSshreder on as well... just in case i had to use IE (i use firefox for everything)

I have used Zone Alarm and AVG in combination before, did'nt have many problems apart form Zone alarm changing its settings every now and then, and as stated previously AVG letting nasties in before killing them.
I now use Kaspersky Internet Security 6, It isnt free but it sure as hell is good, not one problem with it, hourly updates, no impact on performance, installed it and tested with shields up for the firewall, not one port unstealthed. Think it runs at around £40 per annum subscription.
Just google kaspersky and im sure you'll find it.
