My point is that this 'taking the piss' has become boring.
I wasn't singling you out - there are many other that do it.
The problem is that one person takes the mickey on a thread, then loads more jump on the bandwagon. (As I said I have been guilty of it in the past).
What ends up happening is that is makes everyone seem holier than thou.
I have spoken to Tigermoth at length today on msn - he is a lovely and polite gentleman.
He was not trying to be overly 'young' by using text speak - he is just used to using his phone for texting. The body of his post on here certainly wasn't full of sms abbreviations and neither was his converation with me on msn.
Maybe the piss-taking should now be reserved for those who have proved themselves that they really warrant it.
There again - this is only my opinion (but I have felt strongly enough to defend 2 new people in as many days and I will continue to do so where I feel is needed).

A bit like break dancing (as in the Terry Wogan CIN ad)
Well that's my interpretation anyway! rolleyes
personally, i will let you know when i get there, but saying that, no 45 is not old at all.
i have been with a 55 yr old couple, and keeping up with them was a struggle... wink
so it's not age that really counts, it's attitude, and outlook on life.

And in my defence only the worst cases get mentioned. And i am rarely, if ever, nasty about it. Though according to some we shouldn't even take the piss. rolleyes

Which taking the piss shouldn't you do? Having a laugh with your mates, or ripping into a stranger? I don't think anyone here objects to taking the piss out of friends, it's the taking the piss out of random strangers that I for one object to.
You did a poll back in August postie, which has now presumably run its course.
98 people responded.
27% said they were forum regulars who thought newbies were harshly treated.
14% were newbies who felt worried about posting because of the reception that they might get from some regulars.
That's a sizeable minority of the respondents that felt there was a problem with how we treat new members on here. One of the ways that new members are poorly treated is the spelling/grammar "piss-take". It's unneccessary and as alex said, it's boring and encourages others to jump on the bandwaggon.
Fair point well put Alexandra.
I didn't think you were singling me out, though I did feel the need to answer due to the various points raised here.
Piss-taking, or banter, or ribbing, makes this place friendlier as long as it doesn't turn into a personal attack. If there wasn't the ribbing would it be half as much fun? Do we really want only serious points put seriously?
Not a scientific fact but I'd guess that in most "serious" threads the serious replies outweight the piss takes. Which only serve to lighten things up.
Maybe the point is that it is becoming boring. OK. Point taken. Although my point of view is that if someone is writing in text speak it makes things hard to read and is lazy. With the exception of the ongoing bet i have with FB, I will not mention it again. This isn't a strop or anything, I have thought about it, and maybe I have gone a little over the top at times. Still don't like text speak, it is lazy, but I'll be biting my lip in future... biggrin

Personally I also hate text or lazy speak. But that is me. Many people use it so frequently in their daily lives that it becomes second nature online too.
Some people are dyslexic, some are not well educated.
(I would like to stress that Tigermoth is very articulate and perfect grammer in msn - but just not very computer literate as yet).
I just accept everyone is different and maybe try to see the meaning of the posts rather than the method of delivery.
As for piss-taking - I'm with Northwest-cpl on this - once you know someone a little then piss-taking can be humorous. But for new people - often nervous and a bit over eager and clumsy with posts - the piss-take can seem outwardly and unneccessarily nasty.
I also think we actually need more light hearted banter in here - but not at the expense of other peoples feelings when we don't know them.
Some newbies can cope - but some can be intimidated - which is a real shame.
I am so glad you didn't see this as me getting at you - as nothing was farther from the truth - I was just putting myself in the newbie situation.
hugs, Alex x

could be construed as verbally bullying of newbs

And if we don't include the newbies in the banter we are often accused of being "cliquey"... Sometimes the piss take can be a bit harsh, but rarely with a newbie. Half of the ribbing newbies recieve is to help them through that clumsy stage, albeit in a way that is jokey.
If newbies want to whinge, it'll be for too much piss taking or being insular. I don't know what the solution is though. Maybe have a flashing "NEWBIE" sign next to their avatar for the first 50 posts or something. And we all tip toe around them...
And I meant to say that i wasn't having a dig at tigermoth looking younger by using text speak, I am sure he's a nice fella, I posted it as I read the title as 452 being too old.
