Is good grammar dead and buried?

That's what I want to know dunno I've just been for a mooch in the LMU and it's littered with threads such as 'Is there any genuine cpls?' and Is there women who want to meet?'
Is it just me being pedantic or does bad grammar put you off? I know we all make spelling mistkes ( the edit button is my best friend ) but people who can't string a sentence together properly just get me riled. Text-speak is even worse !
or maybe it's because I was almost conned by a Nigerian scammer that I get very wary of people who don't seem to grasp their supposed first language.
maybe I'd better have more coffee bolt
I totally agree Sassy! I'm far from perfect when it comes to postings etc, although I do try, but I detest poor spelling and grammar!
For me it’s because it feels like people aren’t making an effort. Others may think I’m being snobbish but if somebody is posting an advert or in the LMU and they can’t even be bothered to put much effort into it, I wonder what else they won’t put much effort into! wink

Well we're in the "poor spelling and grammar is a big turn-off " line.
You can, just about, forgive chatrooms where everyone is typing in real-time but for adverts, profiles, thread titles and forum responses it's a real no-no.
Spelling mistakes are not unusual, nor are slight punctuation errors but when people go down the 'there, their, they're' errors it's as off-putting as halitosis and cheesy helmet flakes.
Language does evolve but some things are never going to be acceptable.
To us it comes across as sloppy and careless.
I agree Sassy, grammar is important as it tells a lot about people and their behaviour. Having said that, there are lots of very nice people who find grammar difficult and are still nice!
I suppose it does put one off to begin with and may make one not dig deeper into the profile, therefore some good people will be overlooked.
We discount any email's / PM's of this type right away.
Our reasoning is that if people cannot be bothered to 'pen' a decent reply to an ad or a first contact email, what else can they not be bothered to do?
First impressions count. Leaving us with the impression you are in such a hurry you can't string a proper sentance together, or that you are as thick as the proverbial two planks will not get you passed 'Go', and only have your nick added to the 'Ignore' box, and your mail/PM consigned to file 13.
My spelling is attroci.. atroci...bad, my grammar and punctuation are better. It does annoy me that people don't put any effort into checking these things before posting them, especially if they are in LMU and are expecting a response.
Having said that, if I'd have met Nat on here I would have passed him by, his grammar is awful but he's one of the most intellegent (?) people I've evr met.
(sorry can't check the spelling as I'm upstairs and my trusty dictionay is down)
H.x
H, of all the people I could forgive anything for ( including bad grammar and spelling ), you're it kiss

Of course the other way to look at this is...
If people cannot be bothered to 'pen' a carefully worded bogus reply, which they have given deep thought to and identified the best possible way to tell you what you are most likely waiting to hear; rather than preferring to be spontaneous and genuine in what they type.
To add generally...
1 in 10 adults in the UK have difficulty in reading and writing. It's thought to be as high as 1 in 5 adults in Scotland.
English language has been dropped as a compulsory subject in the later stages of our education system.
I can't remember the % of people in the UK using English as a second language.

I do agree partly Polo but I think you can forgive people genuine mistakes etc and I don’t even notice them really but I'm was referring to people who type absolute gibberish spelling wise and can't even be bothered to give their spontaneous message a quick re-read before they send it.
The edit button is my best friend when it comes to spelling mistakes - or as is usually the case, typos.
but one thing i do do alot, particularly in funny/ banter threads, is type how I speak - I use words such as 'aint', 'sommat', 'kinda' or 'eh?' lol but that's my post style rather than a deliberate bad English.
then there are the other posts, when Dark gets all eloquent and incredibly good at spelling, grammar, punctuation, the works, if (a) i'm serious (b) i'm making a point (c) I'm pissed off or (d) I'm typing with steam pothering
I do tend to pick up on when people are typing bollox because they can't be bothered with proper English, and when they're genuinely struggling on the forum perhaps because they're dyslexic. I think we exclude many people on here simply because of that - but I'll be the first to admit that proper, or at least a reasonable attempt at punctuation drives me nuts :taz: - especially in LMU where you would think people would try hard to make a good impression, and then they post a whole paragraph will no full stops ! above anything else, it makes it incredibly difficult to read/ understand blink
oh, and txt spk is just plain laziness rolleyes

It's about 45% of the SH membership I reckon coz they talk mostly bollocks rolleyes
Ah, bad spelling and grammar - one of my pet hates mad
On ads. etc? My honest opinion is that it looks so bad. That includes text speak too... lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy! Making errors in post titles is the very worst confused
Now, I know that there arepeople who may suffer from dyslexia etc but I think if you're advertising anything on a public forum then that's their first point of contact with you and you need to get it right, or get someone to check it, at least!
Just my opinion and I'm not trying to be offensive to anyone :P

Couldn't agree more.
The old adage about 'first impressions etc' still holds true to those genuine folks who care not only about their preparation, appearance and perception but also about our great english language which daily receives blows from the world of IT, our schools and even, dare I say the bastion of supposed British culture, the BBC.

Great thread Sassy- but don't get me started!
Double negatives.
I :fuckinghell: hate double negatives!
Do people really not realise that saying "I aint got no...." doesn't make sense? GRRRRRRR!
And whilst we're at it......like.
The increasing use of the word "like" when it's not needed drives me insane. In fact, for the first time last night I saw that it's crept into an advert!
Yes, not only has it seeped its way into nearly every kids tv presenters vocabulary- but an advert???? It's obviously been put in there deliberately, and I am incensed!
Keep your eyes open for it-it's an ad for a new gungy stuff to put into milk, made by Ovaltine. I've only seen it twice so don't quote me exactly, but the cartoon mum in the ad says "It's got like 15 added vitamins...." :fuckinghell:
I for one will be putting my best "disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" head on and penning a jolly strong letter to, well, to anyone who'll listen!
Rant over!
(Sassy- Im supposed to be tidying up ready for an imminent visit by Redpantherman, now you've got me ranting! If he ends up thinking i'm a dirty bitch, it's all your fault!)
Relieved the hear that, but 'one swallow doth not a summer make etc...'
Perhaps the practice of 'write it as it sounds' has contributed in some small way to this growing national lethargy - much to the dissapointment of would-be employers seeking a modicum of literacy, articulation in their candidates.

I mentioned text speak in the steam room (anyone notice?), sometimes I overlook it if the person lacks punctuation and grammar but seems polite but generally it does give a negative impression of laziness. Also an inept grasp of basic written language skills is generally a sign that the verbal conversation isn't going to be that good either... and as much as I like grunting... there's a time and a place.
