I walked into the lounge this morning to discover daughter sprawled across the sofa watching MTV… there was some chap on screen, his neck loaded with enough chains to secure an aircraft carrier, making some weird obscure hand signs – the meaning of which I can only guess at, whilst uttering some guttural sounds.
This, according to the daughter, is apparently is called ‘music’… I watched for a few moments whilst the next ‘act’ appeared on the TV… and it was exactly the same apart from the presence of some scantly clad young ladies cavorting around (not that I minded them too much) I then made some statement about the lack of any actual musical content to be informed by my offspring that “I didn’t understand”…
I walked into the kitchen, gibbering into a cup of coffee as I realised that I had become my father….!!
I remember his total lack of ‘understanding’ of Pink Floyd and his statement concerning ‘real’ music…..
After chatting to Mrs DD, we were of the opinion that the age of the ‘supergroup*’ has passed and that these days it is all for a quick buck and that the chances of a Spice Girl reunion selling like the recent Led Zeppelin concert were pretty remote……
So, the question is… was the bands and songs that we listened to in our youth ‘real music’ or is it just a generation thing??
* Supergroup by our definition – a band who play instruments and can fill a stadium several nights in a row whilst having an .. ahem.. album in the charts for a few years…. (e.g. Dark side of the Moon – U.S. album charts for over 400 weeks….!!
