Is it a generation thing... or are we becoming our parents??

I walked into the lounge this morning to discover daughter sprawled across the sofa watching MTV… there was some chap on screen, his neck loaded with enough chains to secure an aircraft carrier, making some weird obscure hand signs dunno – the meaning of which I can only guess at, whilst uttering some guttural sounds.
This, according to the daughter, is apparently is called ‘music’… I watched for a few moments whilst the next ‘act’ appeared on the TV… and it was exactly the same apart from the presence of some scantly clad young ladies cavorting around (not that I minded them too much) I then made some statement about the lack of any actual musical content to be informed by my offspring that “I didn’t understand”…
I walked into the kitchen, gibbering into a cup of coffee as I realised that I had become my father….!!
I remember his total lack of ‘understanding’ of Pink Floyd and his statement concerning ‘real’ music…..
After chatting to Mrs DD, we were of the opinion that the age of the ‘supergroup*’ has passed and that these days it is all for a quick buck and that the chances of a Spice Girl reunion selling like the recent Led Zeppelin concert were pretty remote……
So, the question is… was the bands and songs that we listened to in our youth ‘real music’ or is it just a generation thing??
* Supergroup by our definition – a band who play instruments and can fill a stadium several nights in a row whilst having an .. ahem.. album in the charts for a few years…. (e.g. Dark side of the Moon – U.S. album charts for over 400 weeks….!!
Did your daughter tell you ........ you were too old to understand? or do I really need to say that? :giggle:
Sam xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
i do it all the time, on a daily basis after moaning to my kids about something or another i think to myself "oh god i've turned into my mum"
Don't know if its an age thing, or just the mileage...
although Mrs DD has informed me on several occasions that I was a founding father of the Official Dirty OLD mans club...... life goes on.......
Nah shark you aint wrong. Groups such as Floyd and Zep were/good good its not wrong to say the music that has came after never came up to par in general. I think it was either John Entwhistle or Pete Townsend who stated just after the release of Armenia city in the sky and the encroaching Oi/Punk scene that "Rock had gone as far as musicvally it could be expected too get". I don't think he was wrong
I do think that I have aged in atitude and mellowed cosiderably. Whether thats a good thing or not i'm not sure. Once I could be quite actively opinionated now to be honest I have not the inclination or will. I think i must be suffering the onset of hebetude. Aass for becoming more like my Dad though ... OH god i really hope not :-(

Phew... if you pardon the pun... that was music to my ears!! We just knew that the music of our generation was better :smug: ... Sharky runs off to inform darling daughter that he was right, it takes more than naked tarts to make music and feeling a might happier knowing that there was still a distance twixt him and his parents....
I find myself wanting to comment about the poor camera work on a lot of music videos. then I realise it's just my aged eyes not being able to keep up with fast movements like they used to. And I bite my tongue - NO WAY am I going to turn into my mother!!!!!!!
To be honest, son and I have a great sharing of music, I enjoy Greenday etc he enjoys Classic fm etc. the funniets thing was when Shrek 2 came on with the Buzzcock's classic 'Ever fall in love with - - '. There's me singing along, son comments how do I know it and I say:
"Oh it's a classic, Buzzcocks, it came out" - - -
OH MY GOD, I go white and sit down quick before the arthritis kicks in - - -
"30 flaming years ago!!!!"
"30 flaming years ago!!!!"

And that is the truely frightening thing!! Half of The Who are already playing harps, The Rolling Stones have thier bus passes (I think that Kieth Richards died about 20 years ago, but no one told him.. bless his cotton socks! cool ) and a couple of Pink Floyd are now obscured by clouds....
All of the rock legends are trading their Gibson Flying Arrow guitars for zimmerframes......
Where are the replacements??

:notes: With the Who playing on the other side of the pearly gates Must take out shares in Heavenly harps :lol2:

Can you imagine the session!!!.. Hendrix, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jim Morrison, most of Lynard Skynyrd.. all twangin' away on their harps (Jimmy using his teeth) and pounding the crap outta those clouds...
hummmm...
just a thought.. some of 'em may be somewhere a little warmer....
We went to see The Who, at Leeds uni, last year, amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah.. well... in admission, some of the ahemmm... 'disco' songs of the 70's were a little cheesy perhaps..... bolt
(A statement made without the knowledge of Mrs "Night Fever" DD.....)
i find it more fun to claim to love the stuff our younest listens to it drives him crazy

Mrs DD is able to do that.. If I did it, there is a better than average chance that the daughter would go into a state of serious shock and run screaming from the house.....
then again....
Not only am I becoming my parents, but my parents are becoming just like my kids. I had to put parental controls on my Dad's PC the other week to stop him getting porno pop-ups!

Awww bless, leave him to it. You never know - it might be a new lease of life for him. Just make sure he doesn't get a profile on here.

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That is his. Oscar Wilde.

Aaah yes, dear ol' Oscar.. although rumour has it that he was a little closer to his mothers gender than his fathers - hence his understanding of the subject I guess!!!
Darling daughter is trying soooo hard to be a rebel.. but she lives with us.. ha.. so that's a complete non-starter!! Been there, seen it, got the T-Shirt, seen the movie and eaten the pie, had my ear pierced and fainted... (but keep that bit under your hat.. redface )
My son came home with black hair and a piercing through his lip.
My response (entirely genuine) was "wow, that colour looks fantastic, you need to get some of those black trousers all covered with buckles. Did that hurt?"
He did a lovely version of a six-foot flounce. biggrin:D:D:D:D
But he DID look great!
Maybe I should have pretended and let him feel like a rebel. LOL Probably warped him for life :D

Ours wanted a tattoo for her 18th... "Does it hurt dad?" "Yep.. bit like grabbing a thorn bush and pulling it through your hand"......"sod that, I'll have my ear pierced again...."
Ha... Sharky is still the Ultimate Rebel in this house :smile2: ... I'm allowed because Mrs DD says I can be....
When I had my nipple pierced my 15 yr old son said.
"For the love of god dad, isnt this the wrong way round"
