In this case, I'd say, "Yes"
I think people should think about their nic-name and avatar, from a readers view point.
In a lot of cases it is very difficult to know from the nic-name and/or the avatar the gender of the contributor.
Checking the profile in many cases also does'nt give a clue. It's all well and good trying to find an eye-catching nic-name and avatar, but in a lot of cases it totally confuses.

But then I wasn't the one commenting about them being confusing and that we should consider the reader. I don't think it matters what the avatar is as long as it's within the AUP. I do think people's choice of avatar reflects their personality a little, though - maybe gives a bit of a clue as to what they're like, not necessarily looks?
