Is It Just Me?????

As a regular user of the chatroom and a text addict I have noticed a reoccuring problem with communication.
You send a text to someone, they misread it and send a 'what?' back or '???' so you send again explaining what you meant, which again is misread leading to confusion and annoyance. Equally I receive texts that I misread and send a 'what?' text back.
This 'problem' then leads to agruements or heated discussion for the next hour or so!!
I have also noticed this to be the case in the chatroom on occasion. Someone says something that they probably find very funny but just one person in the room doesn't or, again, mis reads it. Then there are a fews words between the two parties until an op or someone else intervenes.
My apologise if this has been covered before but I thought I would throw it open for discussion to see if there is an answer or is it just a case of 'live with it'. dunno
This is my first thread so be gentle!! (Wishy will be so proud of me!)
biggrin :D
interesting opener
trying to get a debate going on this topic
I STRONGLY RESEMBLE THAT STATEMENT
I can't comment on the chatroom but if someone misunderstood my text message so much that it led to an argument, I'd simply pick up the phone to straighten it out! lol
I'm not really a fan of text messages as a form of conversation tbh!
lol i fully understand what you meen Shell
People misread my text whether it be in a chat room, a text message or what ever...not there fault though i often mix my words to a degree that i don't even understand what i'm saying myself lol
So i know very well how frustrating it can be redface
I've just spent 4 hours arguing with my girlfriend over text messages all because of a misunderstanding we eventually discovered, so I know exactly where you're coming from.
She's deaf btw, before anyone suggests it would've been quicker to pick up the phone.
I've been chatting online for years, and SO many times I've seen misunderstandings occur in chatrooms, sometimes I've been involved in them myself, sometimes just seen others.
So much of our communication goes by body language, eye-contact, tone of voice, etc., all of which is lost on online chat. And the abbreviations (i.e. shortening words and leaving some words out) which many people make to save time don't help either, frequently leading to double meanings...or no meaning at all!
Mike.
I think the problem with text and with chatroom's is that they can't convey the emotion or sentiment that accompanies 'live' chat....... I know this had led to confusion for me several(thousand) times in the past 7 years or so lol
I'll echo others on here - My humour sometimes doesn't translate well on txt and email/chat which has led to BIG mis-understandings on many occasions.
As sleazy has said, they don't convey emotions/gestures/vocal nuances that we are used to when face to face. Anything controversial I always try to include a smiley or other emoticon to show that it is a joke/tongue-in-cheek comment.
