Is on the cheap just as good?

Hi I just bought some hair straightners from the well known auction site, I decided to risk going for a cheaper version instead of the GHD's, anyway they are really good and IMO are just as good as the real thing.
Has anyone else gone for a cheaper version of something and what did you think of the product?
Yep!
Most of my stuff is a cheaper version of something that could be a hell of alot more expensive. Sometimes it's crap and doesn't last as long as or work as well as, but sometimes it's excellent value.

You have a lot more patience and leeway over a cheaper product than the expensive one. If a cheap one stopped working after a short while I would still kick up a fuss and demand a replacement as the same with the expensive ones.
I don't hold that view when it comes to buying the ladies toys however. It seems quality has to come first when it comes to those....
I bought my daughter a version of GHD's from Ebay last year and they have lasted her far longer and have been a far better buy than most leading high street brands. I only got her those ones to see how she faired with them as GHD's at + were a bit expensive for a teenager. She's proven her worth and will be getting the "real I am" for crimbo.
I myself have GHD's and wouldn't ever part from them lol
I'm also a great believer in you pay for what you get cool
GHDs?
I've never coloured my hair or anything. It's naturally curly - shall I let my daughter try to straighten it, for a laugh?
To answer the question - I don't spend money unnecessarily on something just because of the label on it, where there is an alternative. Sometimes it's worth paying for the reassurance that the name gives you though.

Go on, I dare you!.. I bet it'll look lovely! wink
As wondered by FB wtf's a GHD??
it's a brand name (nope, I couldn't tell you what it stands for!) In this case, they're the market leaders in hair straighteners.
Winchy, who has never ironed her hair in her life! lol
good hair day i think it stands for.....shit it takes a baldie bloke to tell you that? hehe

I don`t have GHDs just because they are so expensive, so I opted for a cheaper pair which get to the same temp and I think they are great.
We have an iron that is 6 years old and it cost a tenner but its still going strong and doing the job
Any hair straighteners that has a 200°C fast element and Tourmaline Floating Plates will equal GHD, Theres loads of brands out there like H2D & ST8 that are as good as GHD's. Whether they last as long is a different matter though, my mark 3 GHD's are still going strong after 4 years used daily.
@ Freckledbird
GHD = Good Hair Day biggrin

Thank you - I did look, though it appears to be just a brand, as Winchy said. :D
Yes its a brand, sorry thought you said you didn't know what it stood for, but looking again it was Winchy, oops my mistake. GHD stands for Good Hair Day the "new religion for hair"

Thanks anyway - I looked afterward smile
So, am I being a bit lax in just washing my hair, running my fingers through it and letting it dry naturally then?
A lot of the time you can get the better brands and still pay less than RRP, my GHD's were less than £100 online (and yes they are real ones with holograms).
Also it depends what it is, for example a washing machine has many parts than can wear out/go wrong so it often pays in the long run and for reliability's sake to buy better brands, but a tumble drier has one basic heating element and therefore it is fine to go for a cheaper brand (our TD cost just over £100 I think)
If you know a brand you like it's amazing how when you research online and through suppliers how much you can save. Years ago, I decided a brand of sofa I wanted. Rang 5 suppliers (over one lunchtime at work) and instantly found a price differential of £700 or so. By playing them off against each other I saved a further £100.

So, am I being a bit lax in just washing my hair, running my fingers through it and letting it dry naturally then?Dunno, but if you are, I'm with you- I love my unkempt "just out of bed" tresses!

Hey, it works for me - don't knock it!! rotflmao :rotflmao:
Although I do have a slight problem with the 'running fingers through it' part!

if you can afford it buy the ghds
i have used several straighenting irons over the years, if id only gone and bought ghds the first time i would probally have saved alot of money and time.
ghds, straight hair in half hour and would last days
£50 straightners take 1-2 hours and needs running over again in a few hours.
sorry i worship ghds lol the threads about buying cheeper and it being as good.
it all depends, some value food products are great, others are yuck. i dont skimp on washing powder, i like clean and soft and nice smelling clothes.
but i wont buy a product just cuse of the label.
some named products are better quality though.
xx fem xx
There are a few things where I'll only buy the "main" brand, for example cornflakes- cheap cornflakes are yeukk! Otherwise, I'm always open to trying different brands. Sadly paying more doesn't necessarily mean you're getting better quality anymore- just paying for a name, the status, and the advertising that goes with it.

Yep, it's more a 'stroke the skin' for you isn't it? :giggle:
bolt
when it comes to fish fingers I buy named because usually the named ones use fillets of fish rather than the minced stuff.
Someone once told me though that alot of tinned stuff is from the same factory and the same pot but they just put different labels on, I think this is true, I buy tinned food such as soup and beans from Asda and find the smart price stuff jsut as nice as the named brand.....the only problem you have with the cheaper versions in your cupboard is that all the tins look the same lol
another ghd lover here woud not part with them cheaper versions just dont make the grade they are the "holy grail" (sp) of straightners to to be worshipped
other stuff i beleive cheap is just as good smart price beans are exactly the same as heinz apart from about 50 p a tin
Depends on what Im purchasing. Im very fussy with some stuff tho!
Chocolate brand name only, food mmmmmm mainly brand names unless its something Ive tried at a friends an know I like. Clothes, depends on the bank balance but I do like a particalar brand. Electrical goods, I tend to have a look around, read up on what others have had to say and buy the best within my budget at that time. Shoes, nope never buy cheap, buy a good ones for everyday wear, summer sandals go for comfort.
Im just as fussy with fella's these days confused :? :?
As far as GHDs are concerned there is competition. Nothing else gives the same professional finish. GHDs are definitely worth splashing out on.
I have bought loads of inexpensive hair straighters in the past which just haven't lasted or been much good. I finally gave in to GHD, buying them for £48 on ebay last year and they are still going strong and are fabulous - I wouldn't part with them.
IMO GHD's rock
ive had mine almost 2 yrs and they r still goin strong they were bought off ebay after i tried my daughters (who is a haridresser) we came back from hols and laff got straight on ebay and bought them for me we paid about £80 and they have bin worht every penny before the GHD trial i had used others and to b honest for me they didnt work as well
will never b without my GHD's
enuff of my ramblings now
each to their own and wot works for 1 person doesnt always have the same effect for another
I personally thin Buy cheap buy twice- but thats only my opinion biggrin
This is a link to a site with a thread on about cheap brands actually being the same as the expensive stuff but just in a cheap product package. All from people in the know such as the factory workers, engineers etc.

(if its not allowed, please feel free to delete my post)
for example
Bourjois make up is made by Chanel (and is a lot cheaper)
The cheap electrical brand Aiwa, is all made by Sony
Asda noodles are made in the same factory as sharwoods
Clarins make the M&S skincare range. Face wash, Clarins , M&S
now the thread is 45 pages long, but if it can save you money, its well worth book marking and reading at your leisure. It covers food, drinks, electricals, cars etc.
Hope it helps some of you save some penneis.....and remember when you are rolling in dosh from saving all this money....it was Mrs B who helped so send some cash her way lmao lol
i am a true believer of if you pay cheap you pay twice too, saying that we all love a bargin lol
