The whole point of the race/religion/terrorist laws were to stop people saying what they wanted if it was offensive or harmful. So no, they should not be able to say what they want.............or if they do they face the consequences and go to court.
Free speech should also have the responsibility of how it affects others

There's a difference between saying what you believe and inciting others to do what's wrong.
I have no problems with for example Islamic fundamentalists saying they don't like or hate the UK, C of E or the Telly Tubbies. I do have a problem with them inciting other like-minded souls to blow the place up.
Now which do you think I was referring to in my previous reply? rolleyes
Thread hijack interest rates remember.
(Edited to remove capitals)
I was wondering how we got from interest rate cuts to race-religion/terrorist issues as well :lol2:
P.S.
No need to shout Ben ;-)

I know Ben's now edited out the caps, but I think he wanted to be heard over the din!

There seems to be a general miscomprehension among the public that the treasury have put physical cash into the banking system. Whilst some cash has gone in to prop up the liquidity, most of this rescue package is in the form of guarantees. For this assistance the treasury get a large share holding in the banks.
These are contingent liabilities which in all likelihood will never be called upon. Not to mention in three or four years when the banks recover and are earning profits the government can sell its rock bottom shares in the banks and make a killing.
This could be a fantastic move for the tax payer don’t you agree?

OK who are you and how do you know Minx' login details? lol
Looks like Mr Minx wrestled the keyboard off her for a moment there !!!
oooo At least let them think I know what I am talking about!

Both could be wrong or illegal, so they should be treated the same

You asked what I thought, not a thesis on what was lawful.

You were asking what I thought, not what I thought you believed.
Personally I think what you want is a fascist state where nobody can say anything against anyone, especially not against the state.
So long as it's not an incitement to violence or to hatred then I'm okay with it.

I've already said what I thought. I thought I said it concisely and accurately. I can't help it if you were looking for something that wasn't there, whilst all the time finding something that wasn't actually there.
Take note, if I mean "hatred" I write "hatred", if I mean "dislike" then I write "dislike".
So the question is which of us wrote "dislike" and which of us saw "hatred"?
Yeah - what a great idea that was. Lower interest rates. Don't bother making sure the banks pass the cuts on to people with mortgages. They (the banks) were quick enough to cut savings rates in line (less than 24 hours) tho and screw those of us trying to save over.

was it the labour party that abolished credit controls and caused this screw up? Item below is copied.
In 1973, Heath (conservative) suspended Competition and Credit Control.
When Labour came back into power, inheriting Heath’s inflation, James Callaghan (labour pm) went to the IMF and borrowed money to defend the value of the pound, which by this time had taken a hammering. This they did. They also brought down inflation without causing a recession. The electorate thanked the Callaghan government by turfing them out of office and putting Thatcher into No. 10.
The nightmare began. Thatcher came in to power with the intention of bringing down inflation through controlling the money supply. Raising interest rates would do this. This would create a recession, but the long-term benefits would out-weigh the short-term cost, and if the manufacturing industry would bear the brunt of the recession, so be it. She didn’t care. Manufacturing was old hat. Manufacturing was also the base for the craft unions and where support for Labour lay. Who cared about them? Emphasis shifted away from manufacturing and towards finance, a shift that was to be financed by North Sea Oil. The City of London captured the imagination of the Conservative Party, and in time, the Labour Party as well. As a result, Britain’s manufacturing base was reduced to almost nothing. Northern England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland wallow in depression while the economy in the South East of England, where the financial industry resides, continually overheats.
This is a world recession, don't blame this government.

I don't believe Labour blame their screw-ups on the Conservatives .... it's just that a lot of today`s economic and social problems are a result of irreversible damaging policies of the past.
The response to today`s economic crisis has been one that economists would suggest, not one formed by a pre-determined political doctrine.
The cut in interest rates should boost the economy and stave of further problems ... i believe interest rates are not under the control of a government anymore to use as a political tool. The first and most important of Labour's changes since it came to power !
I must have missed the bit about blaming the conservatives. There's some very clear facts about this and why don't people just take a look for themselves.
Thatcher sold nationalised industries and we, the public, paid for what we already owned. Wow, what a brilliant idea that one was. Then she gave huge tax cuts to the rich. Then she improved salaries and pensions for members of parliament. Wasn't it her that changed the link for pensions? Which government brought in fees for education yet were happy to have grants themselves? Prescription charges shot up since 1979, and winter fuel payments were almost criminal in the way they were administered.
Anyway, back to bank charges. Has anyone seen the interest rates that Argos are charging? It's over 200%

Hate and dislike are the same in the dictionary. If you choose to have it different in your own mind then do not blame others when they do not understand what you are on about.
So the question is which of us wrote "dislike" and which of us saw "hatred"?
