if i can draw you attention to the final and subtle piss taking post on the thread, from Rollo Tomasi. he joined a few weeks ago, said hello and told us a bit about himself, asked for some advice and slowly eased himself into things and has picked up the feel of the site just fine. if people had his attitude and sense they would have few problems here.

Surely the point is that the people having the piss ripped are very often not friends but people that the piss-takers have never spoken to before. I would be surprised if many of the piss-takers would do it IRL to a total stranger. I've seen you in the village Blue and you don't take the piss out of strangers but play within your own group. There is nothing wrong with mutual piss-taking, it's the one-sided thing that is not nice to view.
Sharing a joke on the forums is ok if you are doing it with people that want to be involved but why does it have to be a rite of passage for a newbie? Why is the ugliness and humiliation of some of the piss-taking not dealt out to more seasoned members? I see many parallels to a school playground rather than a local pub in the behaviour of some people on here.
I have read all the responses since this reply and I am going to repeat what others have said already, but I felt I needed to reply to northwest-cpl with a specific response.
When I'm in the Village, no of course I don't go up to total strangers and start taking the piss out of them. I'm far too polite for that
.. yes the piss taking is confined to my own group and to people that I know will respond in a positive, light hearted way. However, I WOULD take the piss out of a total stranger if they came over to the table I was sitting at with my friends and barged into the conversation with inappropriate comments, such as "Which one of you lovelies is going to help me empty my balls tonight....?" or some other crass and downright rude comment :shock: . I probably would tell them to fuck off, but if they persisted I would consider them a prime target for sarcasm... that is if Leprechaun as the Head of the Manchester Social Security Team hadn't picked them up by the bollocks and thrown them in the canal . Not many people would barge into someone's conversation in RL and make such crass comments and expect to get away with it.... yet, what astounds me is that people think it is OK to do exactly that online. Why? I just don't get it. Are these people as brash in RL or is it something about being behind a PC monitor that makes them look like utter arseholes who have the social skills of a limpet on steroids? The people (usually guys) that log on here and EXPECT people to shag them after a one-line shit post wind me up no end. Usually their posts just sink to 2nd page oblivion and no-one is any the wiser.... Some however stick around and either whinge about their lack of success, or they get shitty when people try to help. In my view, those are the people who DESERVE to have the piss ripped from them in the most painful way possible. They would get it in RL, so why not on here?
