very good question ,,i would love to know too
Down load a good file shreder from cnet .com and run it lots of times .
Get adaware, spybot and microsofts own (and surprisingly effective) spyware remover. Will save any other IT guru from finding your miscreant activities on there.
I would also recommend a disk cleanup as it'll get rid of anything you deleted, as well as going through your Add/Remove Programs and taking off anything which made it's way on there by 'accident' wink

what is disk clean up ?

Youv never done one of these yet? WOW. Easy way to explain it is a re-index of all of the files on your hard-drive. You see deleting all these files now and again and making new ones spreads all of the data over different sections of your hard-disk. A disk clean up will organise these to the front of the disk so that all the files are easy to get to. Saves up loading times and such. It also re-writed over the old information from deleted files so they can not be recovered ;)
Go into Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup Or Disk Defragmentor (i may have just explained the defragmentor, woops)
Go My Computer --> right click on your hard drive, then properties. Then on the general tab it's under disk cleanup. Takes bloody ages though depending on the amount of stuff you've got on.

Obviously i'll clear cookies, Internet History and Temp Files from the TOOLS-OPTIONS menu but what else needs to be done ?

While you're at it, clear auto-complete items (forms and passwords) as well.... under the 'content' tab of the same menu.
Personal firewalls might leave tracks too, in logs or 'allow' lists..

what about reformat Jack ?

Unfortunately I don't think thats an option as I need to keep all the genuine work stuff
I'm far from a computer tec, but could you not back up all your important files and make a new folder on desktop then send all your important stuff to that folder, then copy to cd disk then reformat ?
probably not helping here redface
best leaving it to the pros I think rolleyes good luck Jack

Ever so sorry, everyone, but the answer is that there isn't an answer to this. Even dumb bobbies can read "wiped" HDs.... that's how they catch paedophiles. Most of the above advice will work up to a point, but any determined IT tech can have a look at what you had there...... if he really wants to.
It's not easy, so unlikely...... but it can be done.
The only really certain way is to physically and seriously damage the disk by cutting it up.
No point reformatting your hard drive unless you have something illegal on there. And if you do then the only way is to format it as it's basic level and reset every byte to 0, something which'll completely wipe your hard drive, including anything ghosted and your operating system. Not best advised if you're using your work computer.
If you want to remove all evidence of SH then remove all traces in your tools - internet options tab and by using disk clean up to get the temp files.

Took the words right from my keyboard.... If you just want to hide it where it really is a pain in bum to find, use evidence eliminator. However, as a forensic expert for PC's, if someone want to really find out what you have done, formatting, deleting, eliminating is only superficial and can be undone. If you BREAK the platters that are inside the HD, you might MAYBE be safe but even this can be recovered to a point.
Just my coppers worth.

On the contary Garden. (Nice avatar by the way). To remove traces of deleted items you must over write them. This process is very time consuming as every single binary bit must be overridden time and time again. 1's and 0's, 1's and 0's. This makes it impossible for even the most determind to locate it.
There are lots of software programs that can do this for you (most with a cost) but really I wouldn't worry too much about it (unless you really do have some illegal stuff on there that you don't want). Giving a works puter back will more than likely be reformatted before it gets given out or used again. Are you under suspision from your bosses of your activities? If not then don't worry.
In future you might want to look into operating systems (like various unix flavours) that can be run totally from CD using a USB memory key as a filestore. This avoids ever leaving anything on the host system.
End of the day a work PC does belong to them, and even looking at a soft core porn site (or Jobsite) can get you fired in a lot of places  If you feeling really nasty then backup your work stuff to DVD then have a 'problem' with the PC where it wont boot anymore... reason being you have used one of the many 'Disc Eraser' tools out there to overwrite the wholedisc 7 times with various patterns erasing all data.
Now while our phorensic friends may be able to recover the data, your IT will be mistified as to the cause. They will obviously rebuild the 'faulty' notebook (maybe with a new HD) and return it to you. As you are such a diligent user your backups are up to date and very little is lost ;)
I used to be an I.T Technition (No money in it sad) and theyve got better things to do than snoop at your files (well most of them)
a clear format will effectivley zero out your HD, this does mean that no-one will be able to look at your stuff. Police gather evidence using ghost spaces on the harddrive, this is tottally kept inside the force
The main things that i saw
1/ MSN chat logs not being Deleted (its in my docs i think)(MSN 5 autosaves them)
2/ Drop down history in Windows Media Player
3/ microsoft picture and fax viewer storing the pictures after being viewed as a slide show
4/ Outlook Express Sent ,essages (people always forget that one ;))
5/ MSN mess logging in, on startup (with your pass remembered ;))
6/ MSN mess My Recieved Files
alrite i used to do a little snooping

Actually, even when overwritten there can be magnetic traces of the old data left on the disc and data can be recovered by someone with enough (a) skill and (b) determination. To ensure complete deletion the area of the disk has to be overwritten several times with specially-formatted data.
Of course, unless MI5 are likely to be getting intimate with your hard disc, this probably isn't worth worrying about.

If you have the google taskbar thingy, there's a drop down box "Google" - Clear Search History is one of the options in the drop down menu.
Any other way of doing it mate ?

Yep, go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Content tab --> Autocomplete --> Then clear forms and clear passwords.
Alternatively
Tools --> Internet options --> General Tab --> Clear History/Delete Cookies/Delete files will get rid of every scrap of evidence about where you been on the net.

Another folder you may want to delete is in Windows...Application Data...Identities

Can you hand the computer back completely wiped? If so, unscrew the case, remove the harddisk, get hold of a decent magnet and wipe the magnet over the harddisk a few times.
Otherwise I agree with all gone before:
1. Delete all files you know to be dodgy;
2. Uninstall any dodgy applications,
3. Run the anti-spyware and disk cleanup utilities already mentioned,
4. Defragment your harddisk
5. Run a shredding utility (set to 3 passes minimum it is likely to take 4 or 5 hours)
6. Run your error checking utils.
7. Switch off, hand computer back to company
8. Emigrate to Venezuela, invest in plastic surgery
9. Change name to Ernie de Plum (or d'Orange if you prefer)
Finally, and most importantly, pretend you know who did the Brinks Mat robbery and demand to go into the Venezuelan Witness Protection Programme.
(Note 8 onwards are optional...)
boot your pc up click on the green start on bottom lef go into help and support then click on system restore this should take about 30-50mins
That doesnt clean up the downloaded files and such. Plus it leaves a nice hefty backup of everything it has undone.
