Should joke threads be locked

Can somone please explain why it is that joke threads here instantly locked or as soon as they are noticed?
Also please if anyone can link to where it says joke threads on the forum should be locked as I have not seen it if it exists, not that I have looked.
It just seems odd to me that with the diversity of stuff that is talked about here we cant have a joke thread dunno I like jokes and wuld be interested in hearing ones from people here without the lock sad
I guess this will get locked fairly quickly but if it doesnt then why dont we have a poll and see what people think
I was actually wondering the same thing myself. I thought the joke post that got locked earlier was because i made a couple of jokes at the expense of the Irish, they wern't that bad or derogatory to be honest.
If i caused offence then i do apologise
IMHO once you have read the joke, whats the point of posting lol or roflmao cos that is what most people would post.
Don't think it would be very constructive to leave the thread open when the joke has been read.
Just my opinion but then again what do I know confused:
woo
Maybe just one thread for jokes only would possibly be the way to go - assuming that everyone who wants to post a joke uses that thread?
i believe the joke threads get locked cos there's really nothing more to be said is there? The joke - old or new - may make some people laugh. Some of those may post a lol or whatever but that's it.
Bit of a waste of space?
Exactly Marya kiss and Woohoo

I haven't locked this thread now because I feel you have the right to reply but I expect it will be locked tomorrow
I think it would be a good idea to have a sticky post for jokes, one thats taken out for cleaning now and then like the steam room. Good idea? i think so

Thanks for the stay of execution Dawnie biggrin although I have logged back on tonight in case it gets locked tommorow before I get back on.
BUT can someone still please address

I am not against the one sticky thread for jokes idea, thanks drewxcore (edit) ohh and Maya :D
If jokes can be replied to or not is not the point, does not mean we should prevent people from doing so. Lets be honest how many times do we see this on the forum in any thread

Does in some cases exasperate the reader. Especially if they are the nudge nudge wink wink variety that seems to invade a thread sometimes. See tweeky's point here.
As for the idea of a 'sticky' for jokes what a good idea.
I personally dont want to see joke threads - as has already been mentioned, it serves no purpose other than for people to come in and post lol that was funny haha lots of times dunno There's no 'discussion', no way of inviting the reader to participate other than to laugh and go away again :dunno:
Bit of post-count bump thread imo
I also dont want to see a joke-thread made into a sticky. Stickies are for 'important' stuff like advice - again just my opinion.
At very best, I would suggest that if there really has to be a 'post your jokes in here' thread (rolleyes), it operate similar to the GFZ.
Stickied thread or GFZ type thread, either way what you will get is the same joke being repeated...and full of copy and pasted FW: Email Jokes from folk who have nowt else to say.
There have been some incredibly funny threads here in the past, that not only have people's sides hurting, but in which you could participate, giggle like girls and contribute more to the 'fun feel' of the forum... and this is pretty much summed up here:
For example - The Avatar Challenge Thread
There'd be a time when if this was bumped everyone would join in and it'd have people howling for weeks.
Now 1 user will post a new pic in it/bump it, they'll be a few posts full of "Ha ha that's really funny", then it just dies again.

And I agree. There are few people who want or have inclination to put 'the avatar challenge level of participation' into the Cafe anymore, but does that make a 'post a joke' thread ok?
you did ask! wink evil
and now I'm late for work!

My personal opinion is the same as Darkfires
However we did have a thread running for jokes at one point, people just ignored it and continued to post their jokes on new threads so it just seemed pointless confused

I agree with you both. Thought I remembered a joke thread (stickied)that didn't work! Same as the 'traveller's solutions' and 'web cam only' threads - people still post outside the sticky rolleyes

I agree with this then it's up to the reader to go and read them. Personally I hate jokes and cannot be bothered with them. I've a dry humour and much prefer situation humour or satire but we cannot all be the same can we?
Being as i posted the original joke ( I regretted it as soon as I hit the submit button)I could well understand how it would be yawned at but,as some have mentioned a sticky room or whatever would be a good idea for people who have heard a "good 'un" to share it with though, a good gag should be told rather then read as at best it gets a smirk rather than belly laugh.....although my jokes don't get either !! sad

Like others have said, the joke threads are locked because you can't really add anything or discuss it.
And Usually by the time they get posted here, I've already received them 10 times by email/text message.
I think it's important to have humour and fun threads in the forum, but as Bigpaul says jokes don't tranlate as well.

I agree with both of you guys.
For me personally I like a good laugh and if there was a specific thread either sticky or whatever I would probably visit it from time to time. I am rubbish at remembering jokes and telling them so I wouldn't post back - well except for the odd 'ROFLOL - that was funny' type of thing.
On the other hand I also agree with DF, there isn't much option with joke threads to input or have your say or have conversations which is primarily what the forum is for.
IMHO - IF ... (and thats a big if) the thread was used properly to post purely jokes alone it may work, if it starts going off the subject or gets personal then it should be stopped or locked. If it doesn't get used then delete it. No harm in trying it is there???

That happens in so many threads already I dont think its really an applicable argument.
If this thread

If people are going to post-count bump they will do it anyway, couldent give a shite about mine to be honest

Ive never used the GFZ so I dont know exactly how it operates. Repatition of jokes is a probelm, thats why I like a source of new ones smile

Agreed, I will make the effort to post an avatar in that thread some time soon. I have never read the whole thing as it was already way to large by the time I got here.

I know a joke about that but the thread would get locked sad
Sorry to pick on your thread Dark just had some points I wanted to pick up on. Seems from the poll results though that there is enough of a divide to think about a change in policy.

It is if, like me, you dont have any fondness for bollox threads - again, just my opinion.

Not a problem to pick up points Tweeky, its good to discuss  I'm afraid it doesnt change my opinion on possible changes in policy though & wether we should have joke threads or a joke sticky, I voted for the 'absolutely not' option

Redpantherman! bolt
Seriously, how about polling on the introduction of a joke sticky? Perhaps for a trial period only to see how it went. Would the powers (not you, Austin) consider giving it a go if there was enough interest?
I have only just seen this, as I have been working all day, so IMO Tweeky I don’t think the poll has had enough time.
I vote to lock up………..
This thread http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/swingers-forum/viewtopic/9244.html
used to be stickied but most people ignored it and posted a new topic, so it was unstickied to see if people would pick it up from the pages and use it and they didn't.
There's nothing to stop people from adding to it now they know it's there though biggrin
Personally I think locking individual threads, because once it has been read all most will respond with is lol or lmao type comments.

For anyone who wants a few laughs, try googling 'jokes' and get 62,400,000 links - why on earth have a specific thread on here for them? All you need to do is open up another browser window or tab and you're sorted, without cluttering up here.
The only jokes on here are recycled ones, not original ones, so somewhere in those 62,400,000 links is the same joke many times over. Tweeky, your 'technical support' joke is an extremely old joke, so nothing new and if it's been seen several times over, it's lost its humour. Ok, for those who haven't seen it before it seems original, but on the 62,400,000 links they would find the same joke anyway.
If you (the general you, not a specific person 'you') are able to make up a truly original joke, then we would love to hear it, but if it's that good and that original, you should be selling them to comedians and making a few quid.
The humour on this site comes from the members and their original lives and the interesting and amusing things that happen to them and that's what's worth reading.

Stick jokes into google and what you get is a list of sites with jokes starting at Aardvark, what did the pineapple say to the aardvark I didnt know aardvarks could talk. PANTS, when you get people telling jokes in a group you get for a start better jokes, newer jokes and jokes that maybe realted to the subject matter of the site the time the current news whatever.

I am going to back track now and actualy withdraw my support for a sticky. I think joke threads shouldent be locked if people want to reply to them with whatever they feel is relevant then thats up to them. The previous sticky probably didnt work as I suspect a lot of people like me dont look at them.
Thats my point of view it wont change as I doubt will other peoples. Continue to lock joke threads or dont continue to lock joke threads its a small part of the universe in which we live. I cant be arsed to do 5 pages or more on this so do as you will and be done with it, simple as. The main points still remain I dont see a DECENT reason for which they should be locked or any SITE WRITTEN rules/regulations that say they should be.
