Hi all wave
Was just wondering how many peeps in here speak more than one language fluently?
Also, is there a language you have always wanted to learn but never got round to it?
I speak two languages but for some reason have always wanted to learn Swahili, I think the reason is possibly that the old man served out in Kenya back in the 50’s 60’s and had a smattering, as a child I found it fascinating.
Alas I never did do anything about it dunno
Good post Pete...... wink

Jambo toto.
I've tried to learn French and Welsh, can understand a little of each but I think I just have no head for languages. I have friends who speak four or five languages fluently and am incredibly jealous. I think as a Nation we are lazy in this respect, but I can hardly have a go at other people for not speaking another language when I can't either - but at least I did try.

I speak fluent Danish, the result of living there for a few years some while ago. It also means that I can get by in Norwegian and Swedish.
Another SH regular who is also a Danish speaker will no doubt be along here soon...lovely Lancashire lass, a real gem. wave

OMG, these two will be singing songs from the Lion King soon!!
I am absolutely crap at languages, but seem to get by ok. I tend to learn one or two phrases prior to visiting the county. Mind you, having a translator on my PDA also helps.
Re the Swahili bit - I would have to agree with you, definately one language I would like to learn. Mainly because when I was out there, everyone was so nice when you did try and speak it and very helpful with pronunciation.
Also, while I am on the subject, have you noticed that Swahili is one of those languages that when spoken you seem to smile. Maybe its just me, but some, welll, you they seem harsh and you gain more wrinkles when speaking them.
I mean, be honest, try saying Jambo when your sad, bet at least a small smirk appears. biggrin
Still having trouble with the first language redface
Does Geordie count ? If so then it's two ! :P

I had a mate working for me a few years back who spoke Russian and Kantoneese. came in ever so handy in our line of work.
the best fun was back in the UK going to the local takeaway and watching / listening to him jabbering away and seeing the look of utter amasment on the guy / girls face on the other side of the counter lol
we always got a good price reduction.

Although born and bred in N Wales i don't speak the language i found it really difficult at school to learn it and kinda regret it now
I cant imagine thinking in another language must be like being on another planet/country  just realised it is
well different country anyway
Just an after thought but it would come in well handy when you wanted to send your addy in a message on a site that didnt allow them i wonder what mine is in welsh (oops did i say that on here)

Just slightly off topic I suppose, however - I also wish I knew a bit of Welsh.
the only reason is that when I walked into a deepest darkest pub in Wales, and the English chatter stopped to be replaced by Welsh I knew what they were talking about.
I took a few guesses, but was never to sure ...........

A little trick I play when in the country whos language I speak, is to be loudly english and then listen to the comments in the bar / shop / whatever, then just as we are leaving saying goodnight and thank you very much in thier language lol

I learnt French at school but havent actually spoke it in years....I'm very rusty.... sad
I've also been learning Japanese....I went there in 2000 for my 25th birthday.....it's only very basic at the moment but Im getting there......
Konban Wa!
Watashi wa Sumomo desu (sumomo is Japanese for Plum.... lol )
Oroshiku Onegaishi masu!
wink
Spent the mandatory three years in school learning French and cant say a word in it surprised
I am gald realy that English is basicly the language of the world as I am just too lazy to learn any other languages. If I was too choose one to learn then Japenese as thats basicly the 2nd language of the world these days, may as well have the set.
