I think they should only be available to people with licenses and safety certificates.
I think they'll be banned anyway at some point in the future - for what they must be doing to the ozone layer!
Have to say I dont really here about any firework accident here except around bonfire night and thats to be expected. If for some odd reason we had a sitck night here where everyone went out on the streets with sticks you would get loads of storys about stick accidents. People would probably do realy silly things like jab and poke each other with the sticks and then other people would protest and say that sticks are too widely available so lets only have trees for one month of the year.
I like fireworks theres nout like doing yer own so I say keep em available biggrin
I once dated a girl called Catherine, she was a firey thing, bit like a wheel
I know this isn't the answer you are looking for Flower, I don't know the answer but I for one hate setting them off at home and agree with others they should be licensed only to organised events... maybe they only do that in other countries I don't know.
There was one year when my daughter was younger a rocket firework flew into our garden, luckily we were by the back door, I shudder to think what could have happened.
Now we only go to organised events.
Bonfire night round here lasts from around mid june to early april.....
Ban the b*****d things is what I say...

Not if people handle them properly.

Sorry Tweeky but I thought this was funny! lol
You do have a point though!
think yourselves lucky lol
Finland has it sorted:
Fireworks are only on sale on New Years Eve for the clebration of the New Year and there is a maximum amount available that you can purchase.
Also remember in Finland Alcohol is only available Monday to Friday daylight opening from teh Government Alcol Shop.
Pubs and clubs are unable to sell more than beer or cider.
I think they should be banned except for organised displays, and then only on specified nights. I live in an area where fireworks are the norm for celebration, diwali, eid, weddings, and even had some this Easter. Christmas and New Year are a nightmare. All very well being told to keep pets indoors, but at this rate my poor moggy would be in more than he is out. I believe there were laws brought in recently to stop fireworks by 11pm, however this isn't being policed either. Who started me off on this???????? rolleyes
Organised, make that well organised events only! I was at a pub firework do once when a rocket flew into a queue of people waiting for hot dogs- it wasn't nice.

Yep agree with that.
Im sure some of them ar'nt legal anyway. I had a look at some of a freinds when i took him to get them and it said stand 15 meters away i bet his garden isnt 10 meters long he did'nt seem that bothered. Just shows its not the tool thats dangerous its the one using it.
Or
At the very least a limit on availability and restrictions on who can sell them would help.

Thats not allways safe
At the Wolves Last year a woman was hit by a rocket when the tube fell.
Thats was done by a pro firm with 20 odd years off trouble free displays.
But still safe compared to home displays
Oh my god i just love fireworks. Love em, buy em, use em every chance i get. Love the thrill of it all love doing them for my kids neighbours and friends. I love doing them for Birthdays Christmas easter Bank holidays and Mondays to Sundays - all the special as the proper care is taken they are probably safer than many other things such as Speeding or getting drunk. I dont know it just seems to me we might as well just shut the door on the ouside world for fear of it hurting us

Lost, I can understand where you are coming from in that we shouldn't keep on hiding away from things that scare us.. but have you ever seen the damage that can be caused by a firework first hand? How can that compare with getting drunk?
A few years ago I happened to be staying in a hostel up in the Alps when it was National Swiss Day. Every child from about the age of 10 upwards was handed a carrier bag of fireworks and fire-crackers.
I don't think it would be a good idea at all to allow children in the UK (or anywhere really!) to have fireworks but I have to say the Swiss children didn't hurt themsleves or cause any trouble to any of us.
I love fireworks displays but hate fireworks themselves. The rockets inparticular.
I used to live in Manchester but I'm sure it happens elsewhere too. You get a few random bored, yobs together, a big bag full of rockets, then watch as they proceed to fire them at people, down the street, into crowds and at the police when they finally got close enough.
Rockets, or other higher explosives should be made available to those with licsenses. Make the licsense free and pretty easy to get hold of but with a week or more wait. The fact that this will stop on impulse buying will be enough to settle my mind.
My eldest was almost hit by a rocket when he was about 5. Some kids had laid the rocket on the road and lit it. The speed is unbelievable! It missed his leg by inches but and hit a door. His trousers were scorched as it flew past him and the door was burnt. I dread to think what had happened to him if it HAD hit him. He could have lost his leg sad
I've always been in favour of organised displays but not for selling them over the counter. Some sellers don't give a crap about the law and let kids as young as 10 buy them, so long as they get their huge profits they don't care mad

Hmm people with mashed faces legs arms backs bums and the rest of it that I have seen due to the fact they have benn drunk = loads. People I have seen with firework injuries = 0 Obviously we know it happens but its not anywhere near as regular so I think Lost makes a very good point.

I can see your point as regards the damage that can be done and no i havent witnessed tha damage first hand the although have see the horrific injuries in the media. awful truly horrid.
As too the getting 'drunk' I have personal experience of a relative losing a leg through being drunk at an office party in the middle of the day.
I do understand that maybe the two are exclusive. Though perversly i think that at some point the benefits outweigh the risks for the sake of quality of life. For sure i would be devastated for anyone suffering injury or loss for an act of frivolity such as fireworks are.

i totally agree with you lost
in this world everyone is wrapped up in blankets
with the increasing amount of knife violence mugging
and other nasty little things happening locking your self in the house does almost seem the best thing
i personally love fireworks and in my younger years made modied and used many
with out incident i must further add because i used my head and was safe
as far as the injuries caused by fireworks its all about the hands that they get into
if i handed a firework to my 14 yr old hewould use it in a safe careful manner (why because he isnt stupid)
now in the hands of master chavvie up the street it would be in someones letter box
as goes for anything it would probably be master chavie killing small kids in a hit and run joyriding accident or bottle somone cos he has had too much to drink
god i ranted anyway like all things fireworks need to be regulated to make things safe
unfortunitly the whole worlds about controlling everything and one
i see bring back Darwinism
You should see the fireworks in Spain  Was there for new year and at midnight everyone piled out of the pubs/resturants on to the street and the owners of said establishments set off the own fireworks on the pavement.
Now I know that most roads and pavements are quite wide but such close proximity was dangerous, I looked through the door and then found myself a comfey seat which had been vacated cool
Personnaly I love fire works and would be happy to buy my own, but for a decent one the price is stupid, so professional ones are the way forward. Give a man a gun he will shot himself, teach him how to use it he will feed himself and others. Its all about education and the reason we have accidents is because ill informed idiots lets other idiots buy them, and a large proportion of the blame is on the PARENTS far to many are lazy :censored:
