I'll say lights off, but either dim - or red, for that real seventies porno feel. (adopts voice of chef in south park): sometimes children, when i'm making love to a woman, i like to leave the door into the walk in cupboard in my bedroom a little ajar, since it has a red lightbulb. then you get all that soft extra-pink flesh on flesh almost cinematic feel. it's a big turn on.
Thing is, you can't really blame people for feeling selfconscious. I wouldnt' want to do it in the total dark, but i would definitely want the lights to be at least low, or indeed, candlelight, like someone else suggested.

Before I was married I didnt care wether the lights were on or off, I was just grateful to get my end away, anyway there was no lighting down by the canal bank side, you had to do all by touch!!!
