just to agree with what has already been said..limewire does seem to bring a number of problems with it, and virus' a plenty...

We have been using limewire for ages and can honestly say we have never encountered a virus there dunno
I have, once and the eldest child has. He got stung with a major one that continued to download whenever his pc was on, no matter what he tried he couldn't stop it. When eventually we did find out what was going on it took Ian hours to clear up said childs pc rolleyes

Jeez I think I opened a can of worms here have had such a lot of advice here and in PM/email that I dont know what to do lol Thanks everyone.
Well since I posted this last night have removed Limewire and am now using Utorrent as bittorent was suggested but then a well known and trusted friend told me Utorrent was better. Ive not a clue I have it on now its doing something with something I wanted but I have no idea what that thing is.

But serching through UTorrent gets Bittorrent unless I'm mistaken

I am going to have to read into it all more. I am currently on Utorrent downloading an album I started last night the PC must have been on for around 2.5 hours and the thing is 0.5% done sad Might be ready for Christmas at this rate. I am on quite a fast BB connection but my PC is old 350mhz 190 something MB ram and I guess also the download goes only as fast as the host or thats what I have been told. Definately I need to read more.

When downloading using utorrent you can set your upload/download ratio's they are set at unlimited as default. A slow download is usually because its not a popular file or you are getting it from a bad site, more seeders will get you faster downloads, so always worth checking out how many there are first.
for music files you generally have unpacked ones but for movies and larger files they might be compressed or are ISO files which are image creators, you will need specific software for it. Bit confusing at first but once you got the hang of it its easy.

although we have got limewire on our pc... if we want to dowmload a cd we use soulseek, its far better than limewire.
ive doubled our cd collection since i joined and i had a big one to start with

same here, only moved to frostwire cos son said it was a updated version, and does seem to download things quicker
Another one you may want to consider ie eMule - works for me, tho I generally only use it to download remixes and mashups that aren't available commercially

no neither have it
If you're worried about viruses/malware from downloading music etc, get a cheap used pc just for this purpose. Most P3 machines should have no problem sitting there all night chugging through your wishlist, i'd suggest fitting an external or internal drive just to store the downloads so they're not on your system drive, then.........
If you've got a little pc knowledge you could install a spare hard drive and ghost the C: drive on to it (thats making an exact copy for the non techy bods), Norton ghost is ideal for this. Once it's done, disconnect it and leave it in the machine, if you get a nasty virus or your pc grinds to a crawl, just open the case and plug in the leads from your current C: drive to the clean backup C: drive. you can then format the slow drive and ghost the good image back again, takes less than an hour
Don't forget to install good virus software and keep it updated
never had virus problems with limwire pro, but with absic limewire i did,
only thing you have to realise is stay away from exe files, and don't use limewire for downloading programs and zips.
if your just after movies go for mp4 files or avi
if after music just go for mp3 files.
typical album of 13 tracks on limewire takes between 5-20 mins on an 8meg BB connection (typical bt)
on opera time is between 3-15 mins
obviously the more seeders the better
as for bit torrent because its downloading small packets it takes longer. i tried Utorrent and was getting 30-60 mins per album hence why i stopped using it.

But if you use UTorrent for what it was invented for, as a bit client, sign up to a few private sites (pm me if you want an invite) and download BT's that way, even on a 4Meg connection, you'll be downloading an album in 3 minutes, a tv episode in 20 minutes and a movie in around an hour (all approx. of course). Ratio building sites (i.e. seed back what you take) on private trackers promote the very best medium for quality downloads and download speeds.
