Hi guys!
Well... you may have noticed that I've been AWOL - yet again - since Thursday. I have a good excuse...
I booted up my P.C.... it coughed... it farted... and then went back to sleep! mad
I sent for my guru who is known by those that love him as Doctor Bob. worship Dr. Bob arrived... and within 20 minutes told me I had a knackered cluster - which happened to contain a file vital for Windows to load.
Trouble is when Dr. Bob fixes one problem he finds another 10.
There then followed a 22 hour pantomime during which I acquired a new floppy drive, a new C.D. burner (which I'd never had before) and a state of the art, "fuck off and die!" VGA card that I swear chuckled to itself when we slotted it into the Motherboard.
The upshot is after nearly a year of seeing everything in just 16 colours, I can now SEE GRAPHICS PROPERLY
Innit flaming beautiful??? This site looks so... so... WOW!!!
So I'm off now to have a proper look at everyon'e piccies - including my own, which I must confess I've never seen properly before.
And the moral is; look after your clusters and they'll look after you!
biggrin :D

Hiya H, you have my complete sympathy, having just spent the weekend trying to get a re-built computer to work. The last hurdle was getting the modem to work. The driver was the problem.
XP was very helpful - it kept saying "I can't find a driver for your modem, would you like to connect to the internet so that I can find you one?" mad
Oh, and the drivers I downloaded from the WindowsXP support site? Windows XP tells me "Sorry, these are not WindowsXP compatible" :x :x
4 modems later - I finally get one to work!

Who said Bill Gates doesn't have a sense of humour?
Go and see your pics first, Heather. They're lovely.
From someone who works in IT I can sympathise with you.
Two sayings to always bear in mind where computers are concerned:
* Never tell a computer when you're in a hurry!
* Don't anthropomorphize computers. They don't like it!

I second Djohn's motion, but he said it in more restrained tones....

Know how you feel, I am writing this from my new base unit after my motherboard died on Sunday afternoon. I also work in IT, but I have had enough of patching the old box up again and again...
Now owner of nice shiny new box smile , and larger credit card bill
I think people capable of that kind of tinkering are fantastic!
I've always wanted to have the knowledge to be able to build a computer like that. rolleyes Maybe I'll try and find an evening class?

I know how to do it, not as much fun as it sounds ;) As a little test I just speced up the PC I brought from the shop on Sunday using my online parts suppliers, and for the first time ever it was cheaper from a shop than it would have been self built!!
Ok that rare these days, but if the manufacturers keep this up there are advantages to buying a prebuilt box, even as a starting point. Especially as they support the unit as a box, so you dont need to identify what failed and who to return it to, it all their problem smile
Having said that there are shops to avoid like the plague, I have had some real problems with a certain large chain of PC shop, PM me if you want my advice on who to avoid if you can...
