Lots of tears

 I always try to be patiotic, in following GREAT BRITAIN in any sport I can watch. I am not prone to favoritism in the individual countries, because further down the line, we should all know about our Anglo Saxon/Viking/Germanic/celtic and Roman roots from the early conquest of these isles. I have seen some of the most pleasing representatives of the sports we have excelled in, and enjoyed them all. I especially felt full of tears today and yesterday over Paula Radcliffe. Such a wonderful woman athelete, who runs with power and grace, and I cant even run a bath or a lead stitch. Someone who espired to win a gold medal, and so gutted for her because she felt she had let down all her fans. Being a top athelete, or anyone representing their country must be such a great burden, and I think they are all winners in the end. I just wanted to say that I know the fact that we are on a site that is NOT likely to ever raise more than a few blood temperatures, and a few eyebrows, it is also a site of caring people whom prove it on a daily basis. To me I send my love to Paula, and hope she feels the love everyone sends her. Because in the end we can only try our very best at anything, and if it is not enough, then we can at least feel we tried... :rose:

I wholeheartedly agree.
My hero always has been Paula. I guess because I loved running when younger, 10k three times a week, county level cross-country until I tore a ligament at age 19 ... my running days over.
Morbius will tell you of countless times I've shouted at the telly willing her on and cried with happiness at her achievements .... I rarely follow sport but do indeed move heaven and earth to watch her race.
A more dedicated athlete, you will probably struggle to find, I felt her pain yesterday and was close to tears watching her obvious distress.

I actually shed a couple because she was so obviously hurting. I do not readily accept seeing anyone weep for the case of failing to win. It has to be a special person who can pull themself up from this. I just hope the press, for once drop out of the picture, and I am sure they will find something later down the way to offer a bad mouth as in the wonder boy Rooney, who is now actively shot down everywhere. Ok I know he has been daft and silly, but only human in the end? I think my main worry is that the media will one day really hurt someone so deeply and it will all be too much. I know from a mild incident in my past with a fire in my home, how quick they are to point the finger, and when it is shown they are wrong, then rarely EVER publish how crap and wrong they were to print in the first place...
I am a tad concerned about her racing later in the week ~ mainly from the press point of view. If she does take part then there is a real burden on her ... if she doesn't win they will say she is past her best and possibly rob her of bowing out gracefully, if she does win then she may open herself up for criticism as to why she didn't do better in the marathon.
I would love to see her win gold at this olympics but equally would rather she regrouped and took her time.
I know what you mean about the press, a load of armchair critics, the most exercise they take is when they DRIVE to the gym confused
Hope they give her a break.
Paula Radcliffe has nothing to prove to the press or to her fans. They know she's great. If she herself still needs to be convinced of her own greatness, then she'll still want that medal, and if she runs the 10k the only pressure will be from herself because no one else can reasonably expect her to win that just a few days after a marathon. She has a decision to make and I think the press and everyone else just need to respect it, and support her whatever she decides.
Ice
Must say I was impressed by Michael Johnson being interviewed about this on tv
All the british commentators moaning about the heat and somehow subtly suggesting that it didnt really count and how maybe the marathon should not be run in the olympics in summer in future - he just said It was hot for everyone and why didnt they say that BEFORE she lost. The Japanase lady won fair and square !
MJ Also said PR should run in 10k IF physically fit as 4 years is a long time !
How true.
