The other day I was thinking about my childhood. God, we were poor and things were tough.
On the day my dad left, I took my first steps, and the last thing he did before going out of the door, was to trip me up!

What gets me about this subject is people who have millions now and live in the lap of luxury have always seemed to have had a "bad childhood" sharon osbourne is the 1st who springs to mind. They rub how rich and famous they are in your face but always seem to have had a "bad childhood"
No matter how bad things get in my experience there is always someone worse of than yourself and if its that bad it can only get better.

I really feel for those who never really got to have a childhood. Michael Jackson and Walt Disney are the two I most often cite.
My childhood was idylic until the age of 7 when my mum married the idiot. After that I was generally left to my own devices and used to go around shoplifting, vandalising stuff and smoking fags. I got a paperound when I was 10 and gave up vandalising stuff and gave up smoking when I was 12 when I was getting up at every day to do my paperounds and wanted to save all my money to buy my dream BMX bike; £400 in 1982!

I didn't have a bad childhood. Quite idyllic really. But now into middle-age (early middle-age) and I can look back to more years behind than in front then I have to recognise that every year I have lived has been better then the year before.
I just have to hope that the trend continues.

I had a crap childhood, my father was a alcholic to the point we had no food or electric, people never understand the true meaning of the word alcholic till they have lived with one, and my mum was...well not a very nice person 
but i always say the bad things in life just make you a stronger and better person, and also i believe learning by my parents fuck ups made me a better mother.

My childhood was good 
I was a bit lonely due to being an only child but other than that my parents are and were lovely people. I fucked up from mid teens to early 20's and that's pretty much shaped the rest of my life but I regret very little even though it was a painful time.
Like maidinheaven, and despite this hellish last year, each year gets a little better for us :)

Similar to others on here my childhood was horrific, I witnessed extreme violence, was moved with my younger sisters and brother several times from women's refuges ,safe houses, new "permanent" addresses etc, and had to change school each time.
But I have to say, it was the making of me, I'm so incredibly strong and determined now, I know there is almost nothing in life that can't be overcome and the icing on the cake is I have a relationship with my mum that is priceless to me.

well my dad left before I can remember, mum had to work all the time, babysitter used to hit me, :cry: and got sexual assaulted by a 16yr male when I was 7/8 :cry:

I had a sunday dinner cooked for me the other day. Pork and trimmings. In my own kitchen, by a woman :shock:
For some reason, she poured the fat from the oven tray into a little bowl. I didn't see it until much later in the day, when it had cooled and set.
She screwed up her nose and looked at me as tho' I had two heads when I exclaimed, quite excitedly "Woohooo - and you've made me some dripping too ! ! ! "

Mine was alright at home, parent's divorced when I was 5 but it was all amicable and done away from myself and my brother. Although I was constantly picked on at school from age 8 to 18 when I left, and I always used to argue, bicker and fight with my younger brother. Even today we still keep each other at arms length.

What a great thread.......I could write a book on my up bringing and might do one day...or dictate one..!
We were poor-ish but there were always people worse off.....the bad times were when my Dad went to prison (he did two 4 year sentances....not something I'm going to go into here)....I could never repay the love Mum gave us in those bleak times (me and my sis) and still does...I Love her with all my Heart...and more..! The darkest moment was when my Dad had a fatal heart attack, aged 39 and believe it or not on Fathers Day...it's a very cruel world at times.
However, my Sister and I have turned out fine...yes we have our problems but who doesn't......My Mum has since met a partner (she was only 39 at the time too and was/is a beautiful woman) who treats her like a Queen and we love him for that. He has never judge us but has helped and supported us on many occasionsand certainly never tried to replace our Dad.
Needless to say....My Father was a very special Man (if I ever write that book, it would be a best seller (in my opinion)) and we still miss him dearly...I can honestly say I have never ever met anyone like him to date....and I have met people from ALL walk's of life.
Anyway...I've rattled on enough....to conclude.....we're doing fine.

My childhood was bad. My mum and dad where saints though. My dad broke his neck in the firebrigade and suffered with so much pain over 15 years till he got cancer and died. Whilst all this was happening I was very badley bullied at school and couldnt tell my mum or dad about it because of the problems they where having with his health.
They found out when I was fourteen. I had thrity to fourty lads beating me up in school. Thats all at one time not individually. I took a motor bike chain into school and when they ran after me I got into the corner of the feild and waited for them to come closer. I put ten lads in hospital and was arrested. My mum and dad attended court with me and the judge threw it out and asked the bailif to take the headmaster into custardy for not protecting me as in 'parental loci'. He was sacked from the school as apparantly all the teachers knew about it and didnt do anything to stop it.
After that I got realy angry and anyone said boo to me I laid them out. That included some of the fathers of the boys that tried to attack me for hospitalising thier kids....
The best thing that ever happened to me was that I left school.

Box of knives?? You were lucky. Our dad used take us round the streets,7 days a week on his sharpening round using us for piggyback rides as transport, and making us spin round on the spot at 1000 rpm using our heads as a said it saved the cost of haircuts, and when we got home we were all thrashed within an inch of our were ever so gratefull to sleep for 1/2 an hour on our beds of nails in the coal shed Lulled to sleep by the soothing sound of cockroaches scurrying over to feast on the rotting body of our dog, well, what was left of him after our dinner.
Try telling the kids that today, & they won't believe you!

I'm not who I am today because of my childhood.
I am who I am today because of all the things that happen each and every day, good and bad, the stuff I have had to deal with leading up to now and the things I will have to think about and deal with tomorrow etc etc. These things shape me into who I am and who I want to be.
There are people worse off than me but that doesn't mean my problems are unimportant, just means I cope with things better when remembering that fact.
