Do any other ladies - and gents if applicable - have a love-hate relationship with make-up?
I've spent all afternoon at make-up counters in Manchester - gazing in mounting fear at the vast range of colours, products, brands - and as usual walked away feeling more intimidated than when i started!
I had 2 makeovers, and left both times looking like Aunt Sally - WAY over the top for work, even though I'd said I needed a subtle look.
I'd LOVE to be able to do it properly - any suggestions?
I have exactly the same reaction I can assure you. Make-up scares me silly at the best of times. The only time I have ever had my make-up done was for my wedding 10 years ago and that was fab. Never had an instore makeover though... they all seem to wear soo much of the stuff that they scare me.
I shall be watching this thread closely for any hints and tips though
If you're back in Manchester city centre soon then definitely worth checking out the Chanel counter in Selfridges - best staff in town (IMHO), or MAC (at Kendals or Selfridges)or Bobbi Brown.
Once they've shown you what to do with their products and what suits you then you can find cheaper versions of what they sell in Boots!! (That's always my trick anyway!)
Always worth investing in a good quality foundation and lipstick though methinks.... and the MAC lipsticks are majorly kissable!?!
But then I just love plastering on a bit of slap - so maybe that's just me!! lol

yes, I feel exactly the same.
I have probably £100 pounds worth of make up in my dressing table, I always have the idea that if I buy dear stuff it will make me look better - but because I don't really know what I'm doing with it, it just gets relegated to the drawer.
If I were going to a munch I might be tempted to ask if there were any make up artists amongst my fellow munchers staying at the same hotel, who would "do me" before the party - I'd pay, of course lol
well i loveeeeeeee make up, i work for the body shop and i love doing make overs on people and i always make them look good.......but natural!!
so try ur local bodyshop and see what u think, plus.......all natural still not tested on animals!!!
ok.....maybe i love my job a bit too much!!

I dunno if I'm the person to answer this really lol I could, but I've also been told when I'm out I look like a cross between Cleopatra and Kiss (the band, not our 'Kiss') :giggle:
But for work, its heavily toned-down - no foundation (on most people I think its just too heavy for work and looks 'orangey' in daylight even when you've found the perfect tone-match dunno...but then it depends how good your skin is - a touch of finishing powder, eyeliner and mascara is usually more than enough & I dont bother with lippy usually cos the whole point of make-up is to define features not cover them, so, for me its eyes all the way and neutral everything else :dunno:
I love make-up!
I've come to the conclusion that it is worth paying a bit more for a decent foundation - I particularly like Lancome liquid foundation and Elizabeth Arden does a lovely mousse which has play value as well as beauty. Tend to use tinted moisturiser in the day though as my work doesn't really lend itself to me being all gussied up (as my mum would say).
Mac do the best cream blusher that I've found.
And after that, I tend to play around with the cheaper brands for mascara, lippie and eye stuff.
Would agree with nola - if you want a more natural make-over Bobbie Brown or Mac are probably your best bet.
Failing that - lets have a girly sleepover and do make up stuff! wink

Definitely agree with this for daytime / work - mascara makes all the difference! Makes me look awake for a start... always helps for work!! wink
A friend of mine recommended a product by Benefit called "Dandelion" which is a great powder if you have quite fair skin (although they do two other shades called slighty different things) It lasts ages and somehow makes my skin look fab without foundation.
Mascara is a definite must though!

Dandelion is great. Makes me look all fresh and radiant even when i feel like poo!
I was reading some research that stated that women who wore make-up were taken more seriously at work.
Add a pair of thick spectacle frames and you were considered even more professional. But you had to have make-up on as well.

mmm Una Stubbs used to fancy her redface
Well i think you lookes fab at NW and Wigan surprisedops:
I used to work for a certain party plan company a few years ago and had to do make overs... the simple answer (and I'm not being funny girls) is as we get older we need to keep our make up simple, less is more darlings! wink
On a night out, I will "smoke" up my eyes, eyeliner and darker eyeshadow but keep the lips simple. During the day, mascara and beige eyeshadow that's it.
The golden rule is if you dress up your eyes more, keep the lips simple etc and vice versa.
I'm a great believer in you get what you pay for and really love to wear Clinique products, but I also like Ruby & Millie and Hard Candy products.
Oh and don't forget 'YSL Radiant Touch Touche Eclat' no woman should be without it!
Darkfire count me in!!!!!
lol

I don't wear a load of make-up either... as someone said less is more! I see the girls at the make-up counters in some shops and I hate the way you can see a line of slap round their chins... yuck!
I don't really do foundation but I do use Clarins Power Compact which is great... about £22 but worth every penny! wink
MAC lippys are my favourites... they stay on and don't taste yucky... is it just me that doesn't like lippys that taste funny? redface
And Cherrytree... I thought you looked lovely at NW... maybe you don't need that many tips! :rascal:

Roman style foundations provide a good amount of support so i use that most of the time

already thought of that! even been to view it :giggle:, the answer is 'too much'
Colours and make up are great but.........you need a good base even before you put foundation on.
Skin that has been cleansed (exfoliated if necessary), and moisturised is a must. Moisturiser under make up makes sure that it doesnt sink in and disappear.
I`ve worked for Revlon, Max Factor, Vichy, Roc, Rimmel, L`oreal and others doing make overs on a cosmetic counter and giving advice on colour and products. (Was a few years back though). The products dont have to cost the earth as in many cases you`re just paying for a name although you find that some makes give better colour or coverage than cheaper ones. I tend to go for mid priced stuff nowadays.
Colours are better matched to what you`re wearing, your skin tone and also your hair colour can affect which colours look better on you.

well thanks, DG - are you sure you're not thinking of someone else? kiss
Thanks to all who have enlightened me! lol
I am so not the person to be doing make-up parties  , it would consist of black eyeliner, wine, and just slap it on luv it'll be rayt followed by more wine and a couple of absinthe drinking games and lots of 'lady love' to really piss the blokes off because they would be banned :lol2:
Come to think of it, why am I not an honourary member of the PussyPosse by default confused
