Stopping over in Manchester in a few weeks time and was thinking of heading down Canal Street and the surrounding area after 11pm.
Any advice as to the better places for a single guy to hang out (straight/gay bars and the like).
Might be up for a meet with people from SH who can show me around.
I used to run socials in the gay village and have been to a good fair few run by other people too. People will make you welcome as long as you're chilled out and open minded. smile It's a great night out and lots of fun as long as you stay away from the really gay bars where people don't want to be surrounded by mixed company... like The Rembrant (gay men only) or Vanilla or Coyotes (Lesbians and friends of). Pubs/bars that would be cool with you and mixed company are plentiful, so you really won't feel like you're missing out.
The ones I'd recommend would be Vue (formerly PragueV on some websites that haven't been updated yet!), Churchills, The New Union, BaaBaa. If you like T-girls then Napoleon's bar is the place to go. For eating out Taurus, Velvet or Villagio are great value for money in my opinion and offer different cuisine depending on tastes, there is also a kebab shop or four for late night pie dropping and snacking! lol
Other advice for you is to not wear sports wear of any sort, a fashionable T/shirt, very smart clean jeans or trousers with shoes would be the way to you being let in anywhere without too much of a challenge because there will be bouncers on nearly every door to keep people safe and having a good night.
Hope you have a great visit.

Thank you for a wonderful response.
Clothing wise should be no problem since I will on way back from Academy after seeing Gary Numan so will be sporting black trousers, shirt and 80's retro tie or I may just get back to hotel and put on jeans and T-shirt just in case I look a right muppet !
Thanks for all the recomendations and I will see if I can fit them in, unless I get lucky somewhere and don't make it round the circuit.
Ta very much

Ahh, Gary Numan, I do believe I know someone else going to that gig! lol
In that case you might like a club called Alter Ego on Princess Street (formerly called Mutz Nutz on some websites that haven't updated) which does a mixed rock and pop night. It's basically a club in a basement split into two rooms; one plays rock, indie and alternative and the other pop, cheesetastics and dance. Good night out and some really good mash up music. They rotate the DJ's and themes there so it'd be worth checking what was on before going to make sure you're not paying for a rock night and then get happy house!
There will possibly be some burlesque or underground kind of show at Club Lash (an S&M / fetish themed private club - deffinately read about this before you try to attend... there are rules!) obviously depending on the dates/length of your stay and your interests, of course.
Just a bit further down from the gay village is an indie & alternative club called 5th Avenue with a bar above it and a pub next to it which also cater the indie/alternative/rock crowd (and a whole bunch of students too ususally!).
I'll stop now before I start sounding like a travel agent! :giggle: Or like I love Manchester just that little bit too much!

Really! The one and only time I went into a gay bar in Bristol all the staff were dressed like 1980's tennis players even including the wrist bands lol
It's OK Tweeks... we have a 10 second rule on pie drops in Manchester. It reduces to 5 second rule for chips and 3 second rule for anything with gravy or curry sauce on.
Just thought that might help.
And the tennis thing has got to have been a themed night, surely? Mind, if it was in Bristol... dunno :uhoh:

Ooooh I had my last birthday party at lash. Didn't get to drop any pies or kebabs tho.
Thanks LG for more advice, although I can't see me heading for an S&M Club !
If the person you know heading to see Gary as well is slim, blonde and female, by all means send 'em my way xxxx
No doubt I'll probably have a look around tinterweb to see the bars you have mentioned and see which ones take my fancy and are easy to fall back to hotel from, but 80's and Cheese may have to suffice since I am not into things that go thump thump thump, especially my head in the morning.
Thanks again
