Oh you do well to run, calling us Manky! smackbottom :smackbottom: :smackbottom: :smackbottom:
FB wonders if MCB will remember saying this on Saturday in Wigan lol
Does anyone know Macclesfield? I am trying hard to remember if it is a leafy village at some altitude with lovely stone houses but a very busy and noisy main street.
Also I saw on the map a place called Holmfirth and the name rings a bell. Was it on any television programme?

It was Last of the Summer Wine, ask Compo FB she'll confirm it.

i think holmfirth is where the "hilarious" last of the summer wine was filmed (might be wrong though)
my advice would be to stay in london. sorry mancunians.

 smackbottom :smackbottom: :smackbottom: :smackbottom:
Holmfirth was indeed the location for 'Last of the Summer Wine'.
Tania it would be far easier to search Google for information, then get opinions from people on here. Might be worth being almost sure before you ask anyway, then you won't just be asking 'what's it like in ...?' loads of times.

My youngest son was born in Macclesfield. It's generally quite a nice place but not the poshest bit of Cheshire. What do you want to know about it?
FB, if we all listened to you there would be no discussion or exchange of information on this board. It would all be google this and google that. smile
Besides google cannot tell me if I have been to a place or not :P
Thanks to all others who have taken the time to respond to me instead of just brushing me off.

Where exactly is London anyway? :P wink
Judy

I wasn't brushing you off Tania, I just think it would be more constructive that's all. You originally asked for information about Manchester, now you've asked about Macclesfield and Holmfirth. You also asked if anyone has anywhere to let, without being specific as to area. Nothing wrong with an exchange of information but you'd have to admit that it's a bit of a change, I'm sure. Have you given serious consideration to where you want to live, before asking?
By the way, there are other people who might say that this isn't really the place for your topic.

Good girl, HR. Shall we let Tania have her thread back now, as it's going slightly off topic and I've just had my hands slapped for brushing her off. Don't want to get in bother for hijacking too.

I just want to move to a place where there are nice, open-hearted people. London is killing me. Manchester was proposed to me and I was trying to find out what the people who live there think of their city. The feedback was encouraging. I have never been as far as Manchester but I have been through the other places I mentioned. When in Yorkshire, I recall people came up to me and my husband in the street recognising us as strangers and chatted us up as they had heard from our hosts that we were coming to stay for a couple of days. Some people would look at it as curiosity, desire to gossip, etc. To me it was heart-warming and welcoming.
I am also pleased to hear Manchester is the capital of swinging smile I might get more adventurous if I move there ;)
PS: I think I confused Macclesfield for Matlock.

Tania,
I take it all back, I think you should move North. people are definitley more chatty and it sounds like you would enjoy it. Have a think about Leeds as well - also quite a good place to live.
Personally, i prefer the cold anonymity of London, but each to their own.....
Jason you are very cheeky! biggrin
Some of my best online mates come from Leeds, I'll have you know!

Hmm I am not so sure about the anonymity thing. I am sure I have seen your torso at the swimming pool! :P
Tania
A lot has been said about South Manchester, thats where I work and I must agree that the Transport links are excellent, however the house prices are astronomical, especially around the Sale, Altrincham area.
I personally travel into work from just outside Liverpool every day as I am not paying £250,000 for a 3 bed semi when I can get a 4 bed detatched for the same money.
I am not that keen on the Nightlife as it seems very spread out, Taxi's everywhere.
My 2pence worth
Mw
I also forgot to mention the largest china town outside of London, in England, and the curry mile.
The only down side of living south of the centre is you're stuck with the largest number of students in Britain, all clumped up together in the 2 unis.
Hi, there isnt anything 2 add that already hasnt been said but I wanted 2 reply in not just recommending the place but to say my situation was almost the same and if you want out of London, for whatever reason, and you can get work then do it.
I am originally from Staffordshire so I had family n friends to aid the decision but I spent 3 yrs in London and it was fabulous, from relying (sortof lol) on the tube at 1am, the night life to everyone thinking u r in the best place on earth and saying hav u done this, that and the other and thinking u party everynight but the sad truth is, even in London, you have to go Tesco and do all the normal stuff that takes up 90% of our lives. For me the final straw that jolted me was that a single garage and I mean garage was sold at the end of our street in Ealing for 80K!!! and the mentality of that just woke me up.
If you are unhappy for whatever reason and want out then Manchester is probably the best place. It has everything on par that London has but somehow easier and simplier and if you, like me as I work in Marketing agencies, are confident of work then all I can say is do it. The only other thing I would say is when u are in London everything else seems so far away but now I'm in Manchester, I know London is only a few hrs, (well 5) away and I go and see friends down there more than I came up here when I lived in London, if that makes sense.
It is not a light decision to make and wherever you are depends on you but Manchester is the future, I've tasted it.
Take care x
I am not working at the moment as I have a baby daughter to care for so no issues with leaving work. But I was told once that Manchester was a good place to find work (one agency was trying to find good staff to send over as they had a surplus of demand and a shortage of supply up there).
I can't buy a house, not even a garage. I would be renting.
Students everywhere? Hmm must keep some distance for the sake of my ears (I hear students play music loud) and my chastity (fast approaching 40 which is the age most young men lust after - it's proven!) LOL
Thanks for all the info everyone. You are brilliant!

So if I wanted a nice 2 bedroomed flat in the city centre to buy what would I be looking at cost wise .. the rent seems a lot so are the flats expensive to buy as well
DD

Actually DD - I used to have a great large 2 bed flat right in the city centre (walking distance to shops/ canal st etc) and it only cost me £45 a week. It was a in a council tower block on a nice estate and was very safe - and you don't need to be a one-legged daily mail reader to get a council flat. I just wish i was there now (i've gone the other way - down to London).
And if you don't believe me ask Mistress Sassy - she used to live round the corner in the same place
