The Matrix, is an artificial computer generated world. It looks, feels and seems completely real. Its based on Late 20th - Early 21st Century Earth. But the reality is that Earth was taken over by machines that were created by Humans, and that the real time is about 200 years later. The robots became self aware, and attacked us. We retaliated and ended up getting wiped out. The remaining humans and all humans since were put in machines that served a dual purpose.....a prison and to use the electrically energy inside us to power them (as a kind of battery......). Some Humans escaped and created a city called Zion (based on a mythical city in ancient times). Neo is the One, a human that can free everyone from the Matrix and put a stop to what the machines are planning.
Agent Smith is a program in the Matrix to stop disorder and people from becoming aware of the Matrix.

Basically
The 'puters have turned us into human duracel, but have given us a nice film to watch and star in to stop us getting bored whilst we're living are lives in a cocoon of red goo.
And it also stops us realising we are human duracel just sitting in red goo.
The 'puter geeks and a good looking guy and girl escape from the red goo and take on the mean and nasty 'puter people in the hope that everyone can live like normal and not have to sit in the red goo all day.

right then... i'll have a go at an explanation... bear with me...
the world as you and i all know it isnt actually real...... its a computer program. everything we see, feel etc doesnt actually exist except in the computer program.
The earth is actually a bit of a shitehole... where the humans are fighting the computer who runs the program to exist normally... but they are up against it... as they are only human... and the computer is well 'ard....... until a sort of Massiah ( reeves) is recruited and then learns to utilise his powers to become " the one"
As the trilogy progresses, the battle becomes intensified............. and unfortunately , a little harder to follow.
