Sorry lads! redface
Does anyone have any experience with a mirena coil that they'd like to share?
Feel free to PM if you don't want to share here but I'd be grateful for any thoughts.
:mrgreen:
Ive had one for years and dont have any probs with it, hurts like hell when put in though
i've not got one never have had but a close friend had one fitted recently and has had nothing but trouble yet other girlfriends of mine that have them swear by it and recommended it to me to stop my periods but i have never done it i have not had to put extra hormones in my body since i was 20 so decided against it in the end but from all the research i did do it would seem it really varies from person to person as to how your body reacts to it although i have 4 friends that swear by it and one that is desperate to get it out her body as she has now bled for 2 months solid pretty much and if i remember rightly that was about the percentage that it doesn't agree with but was a good 2 years ago i looked into it
Doesnt hurt as much when they take it out lol
I agree I have heard of people who couldnt get on with it but as I said earlier luckily Ive not had any problems with it.
Was the best option for me at the time.
oooOOOoooohhhhh I wouldn't go there again!!!
****Warning .... this may get graffic****
I had the Mirena Coil fitted because our GP wouldnt give Lee the snip, although we already had 2 kids, he said we were too young.
I was a bit nervous about it, lots of my friends had them and said that it was just like having a smear .... well, they must have painful smears!!! I squeeled like a pig!!
They tell you that there may be bleeding and discomfort so I put up with the pain for 2 weeks by which point I couldn't stand up.
After seeing my GP, I was taken to hospital where a scan showed that the coil was bent and was in the process of perforating my womb!! They took out the coil which was a completely pain free procedure and the pain stopped just like that.
The doctor at the hospital told me that when the coil had been inserted, it had been pushed too far and this is how it had bent.
Please dont let me put you off, lots of women have Mirena Coils for years and have no problems at all .... but you did ask!!!

They lied lol, it hurts like hell as its put in against your cervix so feels like your in labour, although thinking about it now the nurse did say I have a very small cervix and didnt believe that I had had a natural childbirth. SO that may be why it hurt so much when i had mine done.
I'm definitely coming back a man!! confused
oh no ... my doc wants me to have a coil fitted rather than keep using the pill (to control my periods, not for contraception) ..... no way now id ever have one fitted !!

Tell him - he has it first - then you will give it a go. biggrin (I'm assuming your doc is a man :D)

Noooooo... don't do that! I want to hear it. At the moment I'm reading completely mixed reviews so don't worry. I wouldn't have asked the question if I didn't want the answer! lol
I was really unsure about having mine fitted but because my periods were lasting 3 weeks, there was little option. It was a full six months from going to see the specialist before I actually agreed to have one. I don't use mine for contraception, just period control.
Boy did it hurt! I was having a biopsy and a scan anyway when I had it put in because of my PCOS but I did have to apologise for my choice of language used redface
I suffered period pains the following day and it took a couple of months to settle into routine.
For the last couple of years my periods are down to 5/6 days, regular as clockwork and a hell of a lot lighter.
No going back for me, I really rate it and wished I'd had one fitted years ago.
I had one fitted a few months back and while it was uncomfortable I went back to work after it. I`m in the adjusting period (pardon the pun) but I have to say the difference when I do have a period is a blessing, I do have spotting most days but nothing major and its fading away every day
it has been an informative thread for me
i definetly wont be having a coil fitted now, il stick with the mini pill which has stopped my periods almost completly, the only time i get one is when either iv forgotten to take it for a few days or iv had a tummy bug and its not been absorbed properly smile
i get no side effects from it and its pain free and works for me :)
Right DG here goes, and apologies if this is too much information wink
Story 1 - A friend of mine had it fitted a few years ago due to needing some form of decent contraception and due to having very bad period problems. Verdict - it has given her her life back. No problems what so ever, very light (sometimes slightly irregular) periods, but these on average last one or two days and are very light.
Story 2 - Me - I had this fitted (under general anastetic) around 3 years ago, becayuse when he tried to do when I was awake, as he scraped me down of the ceiling, screaming in pain, he explained it could be because I had not had children. I woke from my little op with excruiating pain in my tummy. I had been warned I could experince mild period like pains for a few days until my body adjusted, but I was in agony and was bleeding very heavy. Two months later (and no let up what so ever in the bleeding) I was diagnosed as being anemic, still in lots of pain and managing only by taking around 8 Co-codimol per day. I wanted it out but my doctor just kept saying it would get better and my body would adjust. Only when I threatened to try and remove it myself did he finally take me seriously and remove it for me! It was slightly painful having it removed (uncomfortable would be a better description) but the relief is somethng I cannot explain!! I stopped bleeding a day or so later and within a few weeks was back to normal. 2 months later I had an hysterectomy so not had to bother with anything like this since then.
I had previously had the depo injection and was fantastic on it. Initally I had no periods, no pain, and no problems what so ever, but after a couple of years on this, I started to experience very heavy periods and that is why I tried the Mirena.
I dont regret trying it and as I said, a friend (who I think is on her second coil) says it is the best thing she has ever done and has no regrets at all.
Everyone is different and although this is not necessarily what you want to hear, but only your doctor or family planning can advise and just because someone has a good/bad experience, it does not mean it will be the same for you. However, if you do go for it, be aware that most doctors will want you to give it a fair go and I do understand it can be up to 6 months before your body finally settles down with it.
Perfectly put NWC - I'm on my second and dont have periods at all, not ideal I know but it works for me.
I have had one for nearly 4 years... All I can say is that if you have one fitted make sure you have someone to drive you home!!! I didnt - they wouldnt let me leave the hospital for several hours as I nearly passed out from the pain!! Was like contractions for about 2 weeks!!
I will admit that it has been very good since did its job and stopped the symptons I was having, but am also dreading it being taken out sad

Minxy when i had mine out i didnt even realise, they just whip it out so to speak, quick and pretty painless.
Ohh I hope is same for me, I dont mind some pain.... :angel: but there is a limit...lol
~~~~ imagines the doctors face if I call out my safe word lol
Seriously, it was uncomfortable having it removed, but definately NOT painful, having a smear is much worse (and more embarrassing cause it lasts longer) wink
After reading some of these experiences, I am so glad I chose to have an implant rather than the coil!:-)
Thank you very much! I think it's the only option left for me short of a hysterectomy. confused
Prepare for TMI! redface
I'm on my second implant, the first one lasted about 18 months and I think maybe I sucked all the hormones out of it but this one has barely lasted four months. I've had a period for the last three weeks and to say I'm sick of it now is putting it mildly. GP has told me to go to the (NO) Family Planning Clinic and get it resolved there. I've tried pretty much everything else other than the injections and I'm not really that fussed for doing that cause once it's in there's nothing I can do about it if it doesn't suit me.
I've never really fancied the coil, at all, but left with few choices I guess it has to be worth a try.
Thanks for sharing all! kiss
I didn't even feel mine coming out, the doctor told me to cough 3 times and it was gone. I honestly didn't feel a thing and the pain I'd had before was almost gone immediately.
Why do all my posts keep going on twice??
No problems with the Marina coil, but changing the alternator can be a bugger! ;-)
What? dunno Someone had to do it! :giggle: bolt
had this coil fitted with minimal discomfort and after about 2 months of 'spotting' didnt have a period again for years, however when they took it out my cervix contracted and it was very painful, didnt experience this with previous coil but then dont think it was the coil, it had apparently dislodged slightly
i reckon its more to do with the womans body rather than the specific coil, at the end of the day the proceedure is the same, the shape only varies slightly and the minerva is coated in small dose of progesterone
my advice is to relax or take a muscle relaxant before you go!
DG, I've had one fitted for nearly 3 yrs now & have neva looked back since smile
I had major problems with 'woman's week' ( more like damn fortnight! ) for 11 years after being sterilised and the Mirena coil was one of the things I tried without success. It didn't hurt being inserted, just a little uncomfortable much like a smear teat but I had terrible problems from then on.
I bled (lots!) constantly for 8 weeks and was in so much pain I almost passed out in work one day. I was taken straight to the GP who removed it who said it had moved. I could only describe the pain as going through labour which the GP agreed with, saying my body was rejecting it much like a miscarriage confused
The only option left to me was a hysterectomy and I have to say, it was the best decision ever! Apart from a little worry when they found a tumour in my womb which thankfully turned out to be benign, and a couple of little niggles afterwards I've never looked back biggrin
This was just my experience of it. I've heard more success stories than not and think mine was more the exception than the rule. It wasn't suitable for me but that's not to say it won't be for you wink
