Im not sure if people have heard but since October 1st MSN have changed the access to their online services.
Im just looking at the msn site now to get the details, but it seems you will have to pay a monthly subscription to get email and msn messenger, i think about 7 quid a month.
has anyone else got any details on this?
UPDATE: on the msn site you can no loger download messenger for free. (unless my eyes are crap and i cant see it)
I'm signed in to mine and haven't received notification of any charges.
I downloaded an update yesterday without any problems.

Heard nothing of any charges being introduced as yet... dunno
I could get to the link

The site still says its FREE.
One link to the msgr page is broken though (from the home msn page)
This rumour goes round frequently.
Doesn't mean it's not true this time, but no evidence so far.
I just had a look at the messenger site and it still gives you the 'free download' option.
Isnt this 'msn are charging users'thing a rumour that started circulating as a chain-email?? I've had the same email about 20 times lol lol You have to foward it on to 10 people in your address book as a 'petition' rolleyes dunno
I 'm signed into msn too and havent had any kind of notification either.....
i havent had any notification, so i guessed it must be new users.
when on the website the messenger button now links to premium services page.
as someone mentioned above....could be a glitch tho.
mines working fine,,and no notice of impending charges
sad well thats bad news if its true but i doubt it is!
we been paying msn for about 2 yrs now biggrin
a month confused
Well I just downloaded msgr 7.5 with no problems and no requests for payment.
I think you have to pay if you want additional services and email space from msn/ , but that has always been the case.
It doesn't really make economic sense for Microsoft to charge for using and MSN messenger as there's a whole host of free webmail services and instant messengers that people will just switch to instead.
Nope, I'm afraid this is just another net myth.
I think this is a load of bollox! . I've never paid for it and never will . Microsoft don't need to charge for MSN.... it doesn't make good business sense.
I think this is nothing more than a chain mail going around. I got it too and deleted it straight away
Just reloaded msn messenger free with no probs. only thing is msn today appears temporarily unavailable.
MSN messenger is not going to cahrge to use its services. MSN have just spent a lot of money advertising the new FREE Messenger 7.5 so for them to suddenly turn around and waste all the advertisment then it would be stupid.
MSN do offer a ISP which people do pay for so a mixup may be from that. Maybe they are raising the prices for it or something and when somebody saw MSN raising prices they might of thought of the MSN Messenger. confused
Nobody will need to start panic downloading MSN 7.5 now so they can install it whenever they want. It isn't a fuel crisis so lets just all carry on as normal shall we?
*lancy well and truly in his place lol
happy to say im wrong and i have just send an insulting email to the chap who told me.
smile
I've got a problem with MSN so maybe one of you knowledgeable people can help me.
Since I got back I have a new computer and I'm very happy with it. Much faster and therefore much easier to use.
When I got back to my MSN, it dowloaded whatever it wanted to download and I've just been to look at the "About" and it's version 4.7.
Now this is my problem. Much of what it knows about me must be on the website because I didn't have to load in my contacts again. HOWEVER, on the old computer the message window had two pictures in it. One of mine that I could change and one of the person I was talking to.
On my latest version - which must be the latest version because it's been downloaded in the last few days - The little pictures aren't there.
Does anybody know how I can get them back? I've been back to my old computer and they're still there on that one.
Please.
Mollie
They give you an option whether you want to pay for it and right at the bottom there is a tiny button to procede without paying... older programmes but they still work and theyre still free. smile

You might have "Windows Messenger" and not the "MSN Messenger" where you can do all the fancy stuff with like piccies and stuff.
If you find it is Windows Messenger then download the MSNM from the website and put the windows messenger somewhere in the PC archive in case you need it later. Once you've taken it off yur desktop it shouldn't sign into it automatically... if it does open it up and change the settings in the file part of the messenger.
Thats about as technical as I get but I hope that helps.

I was just going to lock this then you went and asked another bloody question!! mad :x :x :x wink
Sorry Sarge.
Thanks Little Gem. That's absolutely right. Along the bar at the bottom, it says "Windows Messenger" . i thought it was just the same stuff. A bit of a dum dum in these matters.
I'll try to fix it. I like those little pictures. Thanks

I've a feeling you've actually installed Windows Messenger. As MSN messenger and Windows are very alike and both use the .net passport then the contacts list will be the same.
Try redownloading and installing from scratch the MSN messenger program from When its installed and up and running you will once again have the little pictures to see who you're talking to.
Make sure you are actually using MSN messenger. The pictures part were only introduced on MSN 5 and up too so thats another guess as to what maybe wrong.
Let us know when you've had a play around more.
LittleGem beat me to it.
:bounce: yay! I actually got it right! biggrin
Whoop! :D
kiss Gem. x
Msn mine is working fine. just been chatting away to someone and no doubt to others later lol
Little Gem, you have earned your name,
I thought this thread had disappeared so, Little Gem - thanks. I had absolutely no idea that I was using a different messenger service. It took me about half an hour to sort it out but like I said - thanks.
Matt
Great - I think it's now version 7.5. I don't care. It's so nice to have it back like it was so thanks to both of you.
