Hi, - Very new to this scene couple here. -Have been reading about Munches and Socials. - ok, this is probably a really silly question to anybody thats been on here a while, but whats the difference between a Munch and a Social? - Our first guess would be that the munch involves food? - but we could be very wrong lol !
have a read here, this defines what a munch is

Definition of a Munch:
http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/terminology/munch.html
in more simplistic terms a munch has only currant and active site members attending in a private non swinging venue and a social can be held anywhere and anyone even banned members can attend
Personally, I prefer a Munch but have been known to attend socials organised by people I know and the cost (if any) is reasonable to me and it is clear why there is a charge.
The main reason why I prefer a Munch is - only SH members attend, therefore no members of the public who might be in a adjoining bar/room/outside etc or banned members maybe invited/or gate crash the event. Moderators or Admin can also ask for copy of receipts for a Munch (along with a no show list) and can also ask for an attendance list of any event.
Although a Munch has more rules there is more protection for members and the organiser is more accountable. Complaints can be looked into and dealt with via the site.
Provision of food is entirely up to the organiser of any event and you may find a small additional charge for this or a collection may go round (voluntary contributions for most Munches) made to help cover other costs like food, music and venue.
A social is where non members can attend as long as the opening post made by the organiser states that and information regarding the non members is available by via pm. All events should also say if there is a charge - preferably broken down so you can see why the charge is being made.
If any member sees anything they do not understand or wants to question anything regarding a Munch or Social you should feel able to ask in the thread - or you can pm a Moderator who can find out for you (all names in green at the bottom of the homepage).
I'm sure I've forgotten something - but the above gives you an idea of why I prefer a Munch.
Anyway - welcome to the site and forum smile :)
We prefer Munchs, shame there dont seem to be so many any more sad We prefer the privacy of the munch and being able to have our name badges. Its quite coll that you dont have to ask who people are and can say hi when you spot a badge. Weve been socials too there ok but as there normally in a mixed location we have found that people dont always make the same effort with there appearance (sure thats controversial but I'll speak as Ive found) Also the only incidents weve encountered have been at socials and they were caused purely by us being in a mixed environment. They didnt really bother us but some other attendees got a bit upset.
thats fab, thanks everyone for taking the time to reply & explain, - Now that we know what to expect, i think we're gonna try both, and see how we get on smile

If you don't mind travelling - I can totally recommend the Wigan Munch. The list is full at the moment but people do drop out nearer the time due to family commitments etc. so no harm in asking to go on the reserve list. :) :)
