it's nowhere near as good as an iPad. the tablet is a decent spec but the Linux (webOS) underpinning it is absolute rubbish. There's a reason why they are already called the ouchpad.
with webOS as good as dead on phones and tablets, good luck getting any apps written for it.
Good job on the price though. hopefully someone will work out how to wipe it and install android on it

I am very pleased for you Brucie.
I keep looking at ipads and thinking what would I possibly need one for. People keep telling me they are wonderful but I just dont understand any need of mine that they might fulfil.
Mind you mobile media devices have never been my bag cos the quality of the sound and visuals is shite. Id rather read a book or a kindle.
In edit I am beginning to feel like the kid in the story of the emperors new clothes so any and all views would help.

It's a public development of the old server/thin client solution that has been around for a few years now in the Enterprise solutions market. In it's current guise IT solutions companies (like 'hp') are focusing on the 'cloud' technology to take-on Apple's hardware / i-tunes store (watch out for apple's i-tunes cloud storage offering soon). Mobile devices (pads / phones / netbooks / laptops etc even the humble desktop PC) with access to the internet to store your data and move people towards a more PPU (pay per use / pay per view) business model rather than the buy and constantly upgradge model.
Currently, in the UK it would need to assume that everyone is 'connected' to highspeed broadband (read BT Infinity or Virgin Cable) or adopters of G4 mobile when it's widely available.
As usual it will fragment in to the Apple school (i-tunes store / apple tv / i-apps etc) and by the looks of it a similar service provided by Amazon (kindle e-books / lovefilm / mpeg audio / cloud storage, or a similar offering from Google.
The days of storing your own data / films / music on a home HDD are numbered.

Whilst the likes of Apple, Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, etc. are pushing the 'the cloud' as disk is cheap I'd sooner buy disk and have own storage that I control rather than trusting to some faceless corporate.
The industry has already seen several 'cloud' storage offerings close at very short notice, some less than 24hrs notice, leaving customers who've paid good money to find all their precious photo's, documents, music, etc. has dis-appeared into the ether and they've lost the lot.

Whilst we might occasionally lose a harddisk or a device (PC, Laptop, pad, etc.) as everything RAID'd always reconnected to my data within a few minutes rather than the several hours that the 'cloud' people quote in their service agreements.
Plus don't see why I should have to have a PPU (pay per use / pay per view) business model, I've bought the thing on terms I want and can upgrade when I want on my terms and besides the PPU you often have to pay obscene amounts to actually access your own things from the 'cloud' aka internet.
As for what they actually do besides storing your data in the 'cloud', e.g. data mining, looking at what you have, and you've no real control about how they protect it, e.g. SONY PlayStation Network data breach to name but one, means your placing a great deal of trust in what they do with out you knowing or in some cases sanctioning.
(Many times your data is stored overseas and access to your private data/information is governed by local Legislation in that country rather than UK Law)
In Ben speak, like putting all your favourite things in the house next door, then waking up to find owners done a flit or gone on holiday without leaving a key for you, whilst charging you for the 'priviledge', oh potentially allowing any Tom, Dick & Harriett with a badge to look at it without you knowing

Its a horrible concept that means you pay for stuff you never actually own. A very bad way foreward as far as I am concerned. Though I suspect there will always be alternatives.

Im trying to get a galaxy tab through work, lacking success but as we are probably working for Samsung before christmas we might be able to sort a deal for the exhibition display stock.
Its like buying a movie from amazon, then after you watch it keeping it on a shelf in their warehouse. You gotta trust them you can get access to the store and its still there next time you want to watch it.
The main beneficiaries will be the lawyers who write the terms and conditions you later get dry fucked in the arse with :small-print:

they already have apparently. but to be honest i probably wont use it for more than occassional web browsing email and watching downloaded south park and sopranos and a few fillums.
Gingerbread is looking good on it and as Ice Cream Sandwich is to be open sourced when released that should be available for it soon too!

thanks to my totally OCD mate i now have an HP Touchpad at £115 (1/4 of the normal price). he went to about 6 pc worlds last night till he located 2 in stock and then went back this morning to be first in the queue to get them at the liquidation price.
lovely bit of kit, as good as teh ipad i reckon, and almost free!
he said there was an angry mob at pc world at staples corner this morning as after all the hype pc world only had 150 units nationwide in stock. pr stunt probably.
well im happy anyway :-)

I thought exactly the same - if people were more authentic here and not so damn hypocritical the place would be a lot more fun in my opinion. I'm right with you on this one. All the Applegeeks and Kindlefans need to read the small print. You don't buy anything you lease it on a open ended agreement. Everything you get from them can be deleted automatically without your say so. Anything you upload, tends to become theirs through the same agreement and you have no guarantees of anything. You gotta love corporate lawyers :-S
