We were talking today about the National Anthem (I think it should be 'Rule Britannia' for England but that's another issue).
Lots of us thought that children should be taught the National Anthem, but we debated about who should be the ones to teach it - home or school. Some parents came in and objected during the Rugby World Cup, apparently - said we should teach it in school.
I remember learning it in school, but also remember when it was played on the telly after the programmes had finished (the music) and we had to sing it if we were at one set of grandparents.
I think school should teach it - anyone have any thoughts?
Any country that loses it's will for national identity is a country no more...most of us would rather concentrate our energies on buying a new 4x4 than even thinking about anthems...other than those silly juvenile outpourings we hear at football matches...wakey-wakey, dear people, we are becoming an apethetic nation of expert wankers...!

I think we should teach it so that they know it anyway.
As a National Anthem, I think God Save the Queen is rubbish. As has been said, there are other songs that fit the bill more.
I'd personally like to see a new song that talks about being a good citizen of the UK.
Having said that, as it's the only one we've got, there are going to be occasions when we are called upon to sing it, so it might as well be taught in schools.
God Save the Queen?
Sex Pistols!
'av it!

Nothing wrong with a little national pride......I taught my kids the anthem so we could sing it together before the rugby................. cool
Seems to me that the only part of England that actually knows our national anthem is the rugby fraternatity.
As I mentioned I went to Paris and stood under the big screen under the Eiffel tower 10,000 English folk singing it is an awesome experiance and I videoed it.
It is generally taught in the clubs and bars that surround rugby, personally I think if we want to have an English Identity then it should be taught in schools.
That of course brings in the whole pc brigade about upsetting other cultures, how come know one gets upset when we follow the rules in another country dunno
Correct me if I'm wrong but Scotland, Ireland and Wales teach their anthem in schools so why not us.
I'm very often making a late night sandwich for supper, and the radio is playing just as Radio4 signs off.
I'll hear the drum roll at the start of the anthem, and indeed be reminded that I am indeed British...
however, that very same drum roll on the particular version played always reminds me oth the start of the theme tune to Sale of the Century confused

Should be taught in school.
I also think the england football team should learn it, the rugby players all know it and sing it at the start of thier matches.

I disagree, our National anthem should be :
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays 'pon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

That is one of those I learnt playing rugby.....
I am a huge fan of "Jerusalem" I want something stiring and something that would get you pumped up....
Seriously though.. I remember being at junior High and High School in the states and you start off everyday with the national anthem (although I prefer America the Beautiful" rather than "the star spangled banner")...so when I came here it was weird not singing it........

Oi! You can't have Rule Britannia fer England!
Land of Hope and Glory!
If a decision is made to teach it then it has to be in school.
I do like 'I vow to thee my country' - Charlotte Church gave a good rendition I remember.
.
"God Save The Queen" is a song about the Queen, not about us and our nation.
"Land of Hope and Glory" and "Rule Britannia" seem to hanker back too much to the days of empire.
These songs have great melodies but to my mind their words don't really speak of us as country I understand it Elgar himself actually disliked the "Land of Hope and Glory" lyric that was set to his music.
"Jerusalem" is the one for me ,Blakes words are so evocative, dark, omnious but then ultimately hopeful that we can build our Jerusalem, a fair and free land for still seems a powerful and inspiring message to us in 21st Century England.
It should be taught in school yes but it should be Swing Low Sweet Chariot
What dunno
The anthem should be taught in schools yes, but it should be changed... "rule britannia"... grrr don't get me started, and the British Monarchy? I have about as much patriotic feeling in my ass. evil
Can you tell I'm ruffled yet??
Seriously tho, I'm in agreeance with Freckled.. children need to be reminded/taught of their heritage but a different anthem for sure.
I do quite like "Land of hope and glory"... I like anything that draws attention to the good that our men did for our country, now that's worthy of praise.
The National Anthem was invented in Britain. The tune was taken up by many nations including Russia.
There is nothing wrong with the tune. As for the verse, I am told there are over 80. So there is no reason not to add a few more for the 21st century. I am sure we could come up with one or two if we out our minds to it!

God Save the Queen", or "God Save the King", is an anthem used in a number of Commonwealth realms; it currently serves as the national anthem of the United Kingdom, one of the two national anthems of New Zealand, and the royal anthem of Canada and of Australia. The title of the song varies with the gender of the reigning monarch, and so it now uses "Queen", though "King" has been historically more common. In countries not previously part of the British Empire the tune of "God Save the Queen" has also been used as the basis for different patriotic songs, though still generally connected with royal ceremony.
The authorship of the song is unknown, and beyond its first verse, which is consistent, it has many historic and extant versions: Since its first publication, different verses have been added and taken away and, even today, different publications include various selections of verses in various orders. In general only one, or sometimes two verses are sung, but on rare occasions three. One or two bars may also form a part of the Vice Regal Salute in Commonwealth realms outside the United Kingdom. The words of the song, like its title, are fitted to the gender of monarch, with "King" replacing "Queen", "he" replacing "she", and so forth, when a king reigns. In the United Kingdom, the last line of the third verse is also changed (see below).

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and Glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
Oh, save us all!
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
I certainly don't remember learning all that lot. Verse 1 and 2 only.

Yup, what she said. lol
I've no desire to honour the monarchy in any shape or form however national pride is a good thing and should be taught in schools and encouraged at home.
all this "global village/ multi-culturalism" malarky is all fine and well - and it is, I've no objections there - but we should never forget our heritage.
as an atheist who thinks the royal family should have been abolished long ago,god save the queen doesn`t leave me much to sing the tune and would like new words more in tune with the times
I couldn't give a feck about the Queen. If an invitation dropped through my door to pop round to see her Maj so she could give me a medal for services to sex, I'd say "Tell her I'm washing my hair. I have a lot of hair."
However, I do think that pride in ones country is a good thing. But now I'm confuddled- this country really hacks me off at times........so......if we had more pride in our country, would we be more likely to make it a country to be proud of dunno
And I think if there was a national anthem to be proud of, it should be taught in schools. But there would always be someone whingeing.
I'd like to suggest :karaoke:"Dirrty."
What :dunno:
I saw the queen today she was in Milton Keynes opening some netball stadium, as she drove past in her limo she looked at me as if she knew me...... :shock:
So if you reading this hello marm..... rolleyes
i wouldnt be bothered one way or the other if my kids were taught it, can't see why they need to know the words personally but it wouldn't bother me if they did
OK so here verse 1
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

Has anyone got verse two, something like a neighbour be to everyone you meet.
