We were talking today about the National Anthem (I think it should be 'Rule Britannia' for England but that's another issue).
Lots of us thought that children should be taught the National Anthem, but we debated about who should be the ones to teach it - home or school. Some parents came in and objected during the Rugby World Cup, apparently - said we should teach it in school.
I remember learning it in school, but also remember when it was played on the telly after the programmes had finished (the music) and we had to sing it if we were at one set of grandparents.
I think school should teach it - anyone have any thoughts?
Any country that loses it's will for national identity is a country no more...most of us would rather concentrate our energies on buying a new 4x4 than even thinking about anthems...other than those silly juvenile outpourings we hear at football matches...wakey-wakey, dear people, we are becoming an apethetic nation of expert wankers...!
As a National Anthem, I think God Save the Queen is rubbish. As has been said, there are other songs that fit the bill more.
I'd personally like to see a new song that talks about being a good citizen of the UK.
Having said that, as it's the only one we've got, there are going to be occasions when we are called upon to sing it, so it might as well be taught in schools.
God Save the Queen?
Sex Pistols!
'av it!
lp
Should be taught in school.
I also think the england football team should learn it, the rugby players all know it and sing it at the start of thier matches.
it should be taught in school
"God Save The Queen" is a song about the Queen, not about us and our nation.
"Land of Hope and Glory" and "Rule Britannia" seem to hanker back too much to the days of empire.
These songs have great melodies but to my mind their words don't really speak of us as country I understand it Elgar himself actually disliked the "Land of Hope and Glory" lyric that was set to his music.
"Jerusalem" is the one for me ,Blakes words are so evocative, dark, omnious but then ultimately hopeful that we can build our Jerusalem, a fair and free land for still seems a powerful and inspiring message to us in 21st Century England.
The National Anthem was invented in Britain. The tune was taken up by many nations including Russia.
There is nothing wrong with the tune. As for the verse, I am told there are over 80. So there is no reason not to add a few more for the 21st century. I am sure we could come up with one or two if we out our minds to it!
as an atheist who thinks the royal family should have been abolished long ago,god save the queen doesn`t leave me much to sing the tune and would like new words more in tune with the times
i wouldnt be bothered one way or the other if my kids were taught it, can't see why they need to know the words personally but it wouldn't bother me if they did
