Folk Devils and Moral Panics: The Creation of the Mods and Rockers - Stanley Cohen, 1972
Probably still a good read - maybe just change the Mods and Rockers to Hoodies dunno
How many of our young people actually present a real problem to society I wonder? What is the real percentage of teenagers that get involved in crime rather than merely showing symptoms of teenage angst? Were we all perfectly behaved teenagers?
I presume most Teddy Boys, Mods, Rockers, Skinheads, Suedeheads, Punks and even New Romantics have grown up to be good citizens. What makes hoodies so different?

You are right, in every decade there will always be a "something" which is clothes related.
Oooooo I love the National Service Debate. biggrin
Isn't it strange how generally people not involved in National Service always think it would be good for other people.
Generally, nobody in the armed services wants it.
Generally, nobody who did it thought it was a good idea.
A pointless exercise I say. Things my dad did during his national service. Move a pile of coal from here to there by hand. Clean the whitewash off a ceiling with a table knife. Yes, I'm sure this made him a better person......not. :D

...so why is he a wild animal.

I had to have a little chuckle at this when I thought... that is not a wild animal - if he was a wild animal instead of...

he cleaned it off, appologied and swore it wouldnt happen again.

... he would have snotted another one out on the loo seat, said "it's one of those - now fuck off!" and farted as he left the room.

I don't feel the need to justify or explain anything I say, I do wonder why people are so frightened of different opinions though? Would everyone prefer if we all sang from the same hymn sheet?
The "shooting kiddies in the back" was a reference to a lot of things;
The savages in Russia who did just that in the school
The kids who attempted the robbery at the wedding reception
The current media frenzy over youth gun crime
Vietnam
Darfur
Schools in the southern states of America
Falluja
former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir said: "What is Blair if not the co-murderer of 500,000 Iraqi children"
Oh yeah and one other thing ....... the British soldiers currently being investigated for shooting children in the back in Iraq.
I don't have a gripe against individual members of the armed forces, some of my best friends etc etc, but if you've got someone living in your house who is as socially alienated as you describe is it really the best thing for them to be introduced to an environment of brutalisation that is a war zone?
you obviously have no idea what its like in a war zone.

It's because I DO have an idea of what it's like in a war zone that I don't think it's the best place for alienated and disenfranchised young people.

How dare you insult our forces in such a way

Permission to express an opinion please Miss?
Nobody asked you to justify or explain your opinion. It was clarification on what you said........it was a sentance that didn't make sense to me, as it could have made reference to a number of things.....but since you have clarified (well in a way that listed a few wrongs in the world) what you said then I can now understand what that sentance means (I think). The list is a few isolated incidents that occured. This happens in this world. Terrorism and atrocities have been and always will occur when someone has the upperhand. This could be in sword might or written might. Someone will always try to belittle the other.
I am not frightened of your opinion......as it is valid as the next persons.......but it is nice to be able to understand what that opinion is. Thank you for explaining.
Whatever solution is brought in will have pros and cons. Whether it goes down the route of national service or another format that does not involve the services. What is the answer? I have no idea......but I understand where Jon comes from in his resentment for forcing them in.

The Army does not want them. It's not the army's job to sort them out. These yobbo's only behave the way they do because they can get away with it. What we must remember is that when national service was taking place in this country the youth were completely different to today.
