I was half listening to the news this morning (or it could have been yesterday).. And this seems to be a new type of search engine that resides on your PC.. You can set it to run in the background and let it pick up key words you type, or topics or whatever and it just purrs away and provides pop ups for you..

Yep - thats about the sum of it - personally i gotta think that its not necessarily a good thing - you nwould surely need a broadband connection whilst it whirs away searching - and somehow i don't see how it cannot slow things down on your pc - because its searching for stuff all the time in the background relating to what you are currently typing.
For example if you were typing a word document and typed the word Madonna in it - as i understand it Blinx would start searching for files, web sites and news articles about Madonna - whetehr you want them or not!
personally i'd rather just be doing a search for stuff I WANTED!!!!

Didnt hear the article , but I for one would if tempted to install it would be popping along to symantec to see if they list it amongst their spyware no-no's . Any programme running in the background and with allowed pop-ups has so much potential for advertising !

Advertising is how the Search Engine companies make their money - although some do it in different ways.. I believe Google have companies pay a fee dependent on the amount of hits they get.. I cannot remember the term used (and am sure someone will come back on that) but what the companies basically do is register keywords that are allied to their product or service with Google and then the companies links are displayed on the right hand side of any search screen..

Yeah youre quite right , Google makes alot of its cash from 'pay per click' adverts . However they do not allow pop-ups and do not install software on your machine . The uncomfortable part of software like this is that you would have to allow it constant acess through your firewall , and without programming experience would have no idea what data was being sent back and forth while you were logged on , especially if you were broadband . It may be completely innocuous at the moment , but how tempting for the software owners in the future !.

Is it always wise to allow ANY program the option to track your key strokes. What would you do if you did online banking, you go to HSBC (or whatever bank you like) and all of a sudden everybody with access to this program on the other side of your firewall knows your ID, passwords, and can quite easily steal or purchase anything they like rom the web.

I've got Nortons Internet Security firewall and antivirus installed on my PC and have pop-ups automatically blocked so the last thing I want to be doing is install a stealth search engine that will go popping them all up again ... context based or not ...
Talking of which, the London paper's ... ... has got to be one of the most annoying sites for using pop-ups/pop-unders (thankfully only see them from my work pc)!
