Newbie or not Newbie, that is the question
Whether its Knobler (sic) in the mind to suffer the Swingers and arrows of outrageous fortune or just get on with it a post a few more replies....
Well obviously, I'm a newbie, only joined in Dec'2005 and have only posted a few replies here and there. Now my friends is the question. How does one jump from the "is Newbie camp" to the "was Newbie camp" (To be honest, i'm quite happy in the still newbie camp but thought I'd dip my toe in the new thread section)
Is it through time accrued or amount of posts? If its the latter I'm looking at being a newbie till I'm old and grey ;-) that said, I 've seen a few posters on here that have only been on 5 minutes and have managed to be quite prolific, well done.
This may seem a pointless post but its a first.............depending on the replies possibly a last too ;-)

Harry has a point. The stock answer from the old 'n' bold brigade is to go to a munch (purely social gathering). Which is fine if you live north of Birmingham, or are willing to wait months and months.
There is, I'd say, a crying need for something more short-term, especially in the London area.
Are any of the more established members willing to organise something.....? smile
I would say that you are no longer a newbie once you are comfortable posting on the forum.... But if you talk as much as me then you will never have been a newbie in the first place :giggle:

I don't think there's any hard and fast rules.
Although hotrod has a point about going to munches as you get to know people it's not essential.
There's no magic number of posts, but the more you post the more you get to know people and they get to know you.
It's no different to well you meet someone for the first time in real life. At some point you just feel comfortable and at home in their company.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that youwill come to a point when youdon't feel like a newbie anymore? wink

Maybe we just need more Munches? Not too many (anticiaption is a good thing I'm told....) but a little more in the Scottish direction would be great!

There is no real defining point and whilst it would intially appear that its linked to posts thats only a wee part of it. Getting known is about what you post, how you post it and the interactions that develop with other members as a result of that. I've seen people come on and reach 300 posts(for the sake of a number) inside a week because they've fell into threads like 'word association' and other similar shite (sorry to those that enjoy em) and guess what...at the end of it they are still newbies cos they have said fuck all of note.
The advice about getting known by posting, is as good as you can get, but the assumption that doing that takes a long time is bollocks. Its perfectly feesible to fall into that comfy area very very quickly if you post stuff that brings out your character, unfortunately some people either find it difficult to get their character across or even more unfortunately, have the character and personallity of a tea towl and like nearly every other social based activity, the 'tea towels' get the occasional sympathy interaction, but for the most part get passed over.

you have such a way with words dave rotflmao
Posting can reflect the way you are in real life.......... some people can post some very good things in 5 minutes of getting here and almost immediatley become accepted by the community, whilst others take ages to achieve the same thing....
Finally there are others (like me) who post utter bollox most of the time, but hey thats life......
Ultimately you will only ever get a complete picture of what someones like by meeting them, never let anyone try and persuade you to the contrary..

fookin ell'...ello meaty what you doing in here
now as it happens meaty is probably a good example of someone who didn't take too many posts to fit in and show his own character and personallity, it really is about what you post.
I do believe that there needs to be a mix of interest and style as posting the same old ohhh ahhh sexy baby <> shite, however relevant, just marks you out as a hand monkey. So if you want my advice then you must be desperate, cos I wouldn't believe me, but post humour, bollox, serious, contentious, within the AUP and before you know it you'll have fitted in, got bored and it wont matter a fuck anyways.
Err, they've shut me local cos posties dropped his false teeth into the fuse box and all the lights have gone out. had an uncontrollable urge to spout my usual drivel and this place seemed to fit
My advice for what little it is worth is to just be your self, at first you may feel like you are intrudeing. But after all everyone was a newbie at first I have found as a newb myself that if you post regular people start to reconise you. A tip is to attach an avatar (there is a post on how to do this in help section on the left of your screen) that way people reconise your avatar and your post's stand out to better.
Failing that try my aproach just keep posting untill everyone gets sick of ignoring you lol lol
Hi Harry
My answer is: Ask DaveJ biggrin
Other than that, welcome to SH and please take your toe out of my jug of pina colada wink

he wont miss em they were a fuckin awfull fit last time I saw him anyways.
If you get a sudden urge to get your dick out and plunge it in and out of a jar of warm liver on cam whilst singing in written form 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' then pop into the chat room.
As newbies, we think we will be untill we have met a few people, and been able to put faces to names.

I'd rethink your choice of juggling items, fruit is bound to drive the palm monkeys into a frenzy with countless requests for you to switch to bannanas.
anyways nice to see you and a few of the others out and about, I'd come into your waiting room and say hello, but I've got a quiche to make and a repair to a leaking wellington boot to attend to
pop into the private bar when posties teeth are fished out and the lights go on
newbie or not newbie that is the question!!??
i wont do a search but that must have been done SOOOO many times rolleyes
i know, theres always one!! its generally me wink
Well they must have a hell of a work rate! Shakespeare wrote it in 1601 and I had a version out by 1747.
That said, I'm not the fastest typist in the world, in fact I started this as soon as your last post came up ;-)

I think it's neither of these; it's an attitude of mind ....................
confused: Do you feel comfortable patronising others as newbies?
:?: Are you happy appointing yourself as official greeter whenever you spot a post by a newbie?
:?: Do you complain that SH is nothing like as good as it was?
:?: Do you feel able to join the feeding frenzy whenever there is a group attack on anyone who says something that upsets a regular?
:?: Is your signature block far larger than the amount of text of your posts?
:?: Do you feel that no thread is complete without a post from yourself, even if it's just to say that you have nothing to say?
If you can answer Yes to most of these, you can tear up your newbie L Plates!!
Hi its Harry,Well i surpose i am a newbi as i was part of a couple but we have split up. Lou used too do all the posts on hear and i was the silent partner now i have to get myself none aswell as every one else i look at the title as a friendly way of grouping new members. And as most people have put you just lose the title as you get none theres people on hear that dont go to many of the parties/munches but are well none. so keep posting and us the chat room if you dare and you wont stay newbi for long.

Actually, I think it's more a case of if you .......
:?: Start to feel yourself that you are no longer a newbie
:?: Mik69 's done a brilliant example of this -
My advice for what little it is worth is to just be your self, at first you may feel like you are intrudeing. A tip is to attach an avatar (there is a post on how to do this in help section on the left of your screen) that way people reconise your avatar and your post's stand out to better
- eg, when you start to 'contribute' to the site/ community and start offering advice (however small) to others because you have a genuine desire to help other 'newbies'....
:?: When others on the site see your avatar/ sig and think 'oh yeah, he's the one who's really funny/ a right twat/ posts crap to get post count up/ says some really interesting stuff/ swallowed a dictionary/ is a dark horse/ is really helpful/ sarcastic/ stupid/ intelligent etc etc etc - what i mean is, when you've been around long enough (or posted loads in a short period of time) and are recognised by others
:?: Its absolutely FA to do with 'feeling comfortable patronising other newbies' rolleyes
I could go on and on, but I wont. When I first came here (and for a few months after wink ) I had a proper bee in my bonnet about 'still being a noob' - then all of a sudden I didnt feel like a noob anymore (see above) and have since been to munches and socials and met many of the people here in 'reallife', and now consider myself to be a regular biggrin
You are no longer a Newbie when I can take the piss out of you without worrying that I'm going to offend you!!! confused :? :? lol
