I'm a big American footie fan, been watching it for years now. Everyone I know seems to think it's nonsense. Anyone here a fan of the NFL?

Nope, not us.
Hi,
Don't watch as much as I used to (prefer sleep these days!)
But been into it for a number of years. Denver Broncos is my team - doing pretty well this year too - ever since John Elway.
Still haven't a clue about some of the technical stuff they go on about tho!
i remember that guy the fridge when the game first took off over here.
but if someone could take a time out and explain the rules to me i would happily sit down and watch it, but as i do not understand it at present i'm afraid it is always time to reach for the remote...
I was an avid fan till a couple off years ago and dont watch it now .
onse you get the hang of the rules its good .
just like cricket lol
come on then debz when you going to teach me about it ???
Tried to get into it by watching late night games in my teenage years, but I never got the hang of it. Not watched it for years.

I usually just tape the game and watch it the next day - that way I get sleep too. the Broncos are also my team because I thought Elway was the man. Just picked up a new Broncos top in the states this year when I was on holiday.
I noticed you were from Lothian, Bandmaster - u ever go to the Claymores games?
Hi!
Don't watch it as much as I used to - probably as I am a Sanfransico 49ers fan!
All I can say is 49ers are a bit short of the mark this season!! (again!!)
Do still enjoy watching it on channel 5 during my insomniac moments - which seem to becoming more frequent again recently - but that's another story!!
To this day I still don't understand why they need so many in a team. Don't think many of the NFL players would last long if they played Rugby!!
Catch You LateRon!!
I am really going to annoy some people with this but....
I prefer a real mans game Rugby. None of this lets get padded so we look bigger that the others, Oooo they might hurt me if I dont have all my padding on, and lets stop every 10 seconds to have a break. ....
And what is the idea of putting makeup on in stripes under your helmet?????
Green Bay Packers are my first choice team, who can better brett farve on a good day.
Broncos are my second favorite but agree not as good since elway retired

i knew someone would say this eventually... let me say before anything that i play rugby at county level when i was younger, and american football for great britain when i was at university....
lets dispell the pads myth..... the pads basically protect your hips and the base of your spine
your shoulder pads protect the upper half of your torso...
which means everthing else is exposed and you are use the helmet as a weapon... like to see you be on the other end... because it bloody hurts, trust me...
also i think your'll find that most rugby players at a high level wear body and shoulder protectors now anyway.......
i watch NFL... l like it (Falcons fan, so can't call me a glory hunter!.... only had 2 good seasons in 30!!!)
I prefer college football though..... lot more passion and excitment than at the professional level....

Went I played some years ago it was just not done to wear protection as a collision with another player could injure him more. (but the studs used to make em squeal lol ) I just dont get the game it takes ages to play it stops all the time theres no rythmn to it. At least with a bit of union the only time you get a rest is in the scrum.

spelling mistake dunno
Thought NFL meant - Not F***ing Likely'!
Am not a fan - but after the fantastic weekend for English sport who needs an American one getting in the way!
Used to watch it when younger during the days of the Refridgerator and Dan Marino.........who I used to fancy something rotten! rolleyes redface
I have kept an eye on it since 1984, but have lost my way a bit over the past few seasons. It's like any sport though, once you know the objectives and the rules it does become very interesting. I, like many others thought that it was just a bunch of blokes in pads throwing themselves at each other. But as I said it is much more than that.
Anway, who did I follow...I still am a Minnesota Vikings fan.
Mr CCR
Go Seahawks trust me this year, this thread is going to run and run. SEA BELIEVE
7 and 2, and a 5 and 0 winning streak only bettered once in the Franchise history. worship :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Comming from Vancouver, the Seahawks are my second favorites(just behind lifelong team Minnisota Vikings...gotta love that logo)! And having played both rugby and football for 10 years or so i assure you, football tackles hurt far, far worse then rugby ones do. Has more to do with a) helmets and b) the speed at which your tackled. A wide reciever(the guy way out on the side) running at say 10 mph getting hit by a safety moving at the same speed is a hell of an impact, particularly when you are taught from the beginning to use the top of your helmet as the point of impact!
WOW - I thought I was the only one that liked Gridiron biggrin good to see so many fans. Do any of you follow the British Game?
I've been playing since the age of 11 (22 years now , being 6'3" and 19 stone helps! ) and have represented GB at Youth and Uni level ( Fabio - what year did you play?) and am currently playing for the number 2 team in Britain and we're ranked 8th in Europe. Last year we played in the European final in Austria in front of 9,000 people and the game was shown live on Austrian TV.
Like most thing American (no offense to any US buddies on the site) they like to over complicate things abit but once you understand the basics it's a fantastic game and an NFL game is a day long event with pre and post game parties and a friendly atmosphere no matter what side you support.
If anyone's in the South London area and wants to see a game we start April/May time - drop me a line.
The only down side is I'm also a niners fan  and we're going through a bit of a "transitional period" - in other words we suck at the moment
wow.. i couple of things i'd like to pick up on....
Bubba... i was at Demonfort uni from 95-98.... so a bit older than you... lol i was also a walk on at michigan state university....
so do you play for the olympions???
oh yeah.. and the niners suck!!! lol
canuckhead.... nice that our paths finally cross.... you have made one hell of an impression....
being from vancouver i thought you'd be a B.C lion... smile i am well into CFL now... looks mad!!!
so what did you make of the vikings imploding????
rebecca tv.....
o the seahawks suck.. lol nah... you are actually quite good... waiting for the normal year end collapse followed by the playoff choke job!!!:)
A guy i used to go to school with went to SMU and was involved with the Cowboys and the 49ers.I think he also played in the Canadian again he was a bloody huge guy who was fit as hell.
Apparently he is the head track and field coach at Stanford university at the moment

The nearest I got to following the British game was a Claymores Season Ticket. But the East Kilbride Pirates are really nearby, so I should go.

Fabio - I played for Surrey Stingers '94/95 (was a slightly "mature" student biggrin ) and was nominated for the All Star Team as a defensive tackle/offensive guard.
No I don't play for the O's evil I play for the team that beat them in the final last year and lost to them in this years final.
You walked on at MSU - what position?
As for the Niners - yeah we're not exactly tearing up trees at the mo' but no one has won more Super Bowls than us :D and at least we can't get any worse lol
Cygnus - we played East Kilbride a couple of years ago at their place (that was a trip and a half from Guildford!!) - it rained the whole weekend and the pitch was so water logged whenever you went to ground you nearly drowned!! Scottish weather eh ?
You better believe i'm a lions fan and what a season they've just had. Plus the Grey Cup is being played this year at B.C. Place in Vancouver. Would'a like to be at that party! As for the vikings, like the falcons fan, i'm used to them now. Great season but nothing in the playoffs. They need another Fran Tarkington!!!
Fran Tarkington - You'll be wanting Alan Page next lol . Change of subject but football related :

LMAO - wouldn't mind seeing the bar's CCTV
Silly girls, not an ounce of self control, unlike the rest of us eh!
OMG what a game, I’m on the floor here Seattle 24-21 New York G
GGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOO
SSSSEEEEEAAAAHHHAAAAAAWWWWWKKKKSSSS.
The sign of a good team, winning a game you should have lost 3 times.
By the way anyone up for a meet at the Wembley game should it happen?
