big business does not care what we eat as long as they are making big profits

I heard Jamie Oliver being interviewed on the radio a day or two before the broadcast, & he had a lot to say about the government's recent statement on school dinners.
He criticised it for starting with a comment about getting parents involved. He says too many parents are not interested in what their kids eat at school, & asked why the government cannot provide a lead on this type of thing. That was an interesting change from the more usual complaints about how we all live in a "nanny state" & that the government should interfere less!! His point is that the government has been elected for a purpose & they should get on with it.
He also criticised the statement for talking about the new body that has been set up to oversee this area, as it has representatives from the food industry. He says that there should not be any representation from organisations with a financial interest. Presumaby the government would counter that by saying that without it, the views of the body would be far less well informed.
It is important to note that the Food Lobby in this country is an extremely powerful one, with loads of political clout. There has been some very good (brave!) journalism done on this subject over the past 10 years or so to expose the dirty tricks that food producers will indulge in to get more fat, more sugar, & more salt into what we eat.
Didn't see it but just wondered where they got the 37p from as we use to pay aday before our son decided he wanted a packed lunch instead!

The point is Dave, that's what you pay, but that covers overheads and the final cost of 1 meal to the school caterers is 37p. The rest is swallowed by cooking, staffing, cleaning etc that the school have to provide. Only 37p is spent on actual food.

That's the amount of money that the council provides to feed each child. If a school goes over that food cost, the excess comes out of the budget for the school, as Jamie Oliver was reminded by the Headteacher when she pointed that the meals he was providing considerably exceeded that.
To quote from the "Feed Me Better" website ( ):
"On average, dinner ladies have between 35 and 45p to spend on food per meal, the cost of a bag of crisps. Why doesn't the government commit specific new funding for school meals? More money for overtime for dinner ladies. More money for training kitchen staff to keep them motivated. More money for kitchen upgrades and equipment. More money to put better food on the plate, basically".

I also like Jamie, but I think that when his current programme is finished nutrition will again be ignored.

And I thought I was cynical. wink
A link on the Feed Me Better website takes you to Greenwich Council's page showing what they are doing as a result of this project:
Nice thread.
With 37p is possible to create a meal but needs training and time to prepare whichj the poor catering staff dont get. It is the same as most things you get what you pay for. Government satrves the schools from real cash in this area then laments at the health problems and also the behaviuor in schools. All are linked and if they actually did a full study of the "hidden" cost of giving bad dinners then they would find it more cost effective to feed them well and give the catering staff more money,

Which brings me round to cycling to school. The school doesn't allow cycling the school-run because they have no where to keep the bikes (in my day all schools had bicycle sheds) and no, they don't allow you to chain the bikes to the fence either. They're selling off a playing field they don't use anymore, but alas, there's no budget for a bike shed still.
They'd prefer we eat pizza and drive!

Libra Love, has'nt the school got a metalwork or crafts class/ it's realy a problem me and some friends could build them a cycle rack/ realy should be told to the council, though what department i dont yes i do it would be the sports on do it for the luck.
Interesting reading. I cant really add to whats already been said, but i definately agreed with the general concensus.
And thanks for the Petition link. lol

Who remembers kids getting ADT in the past? It's a fancy name for kids who are fed too much sugar and E numbers.
If people want to feed their children chemicals and tooth-rotting rubbish what do they expect? And how can kids learn without proper food in their bellies?

ADT= Attention Deficit ?
I had a nephew who was hyperactive and drove his mom and everyone else mad. In one visit, he ripped up our garden watering system single-handedly, in a garden area that measured over 350 feet. When I visited my cousin at home I saw what he was being fed: snacks like cheetos, coloured cheese and coke. I warned my cousin about tartrazine (the food colouring) and she took my advice on board. Her little devil calmed down and became an exemplary kid.
if you wanna see how bad it can get - look to our brethren in the USA - ADD and ADDH are rife with ritallin being given out like smarties... Diet? it's more akin to force feeding geese for pate! Sadly, I see the UK sliding down the same route... Balanced diet, excercise and more water... Simple init?
EDIT: just to be clear, ADD & ADHD are real - not all caused by poor diet. But some kids will exhibit the same sysptoms on a poor diet...
ADHD is most definatly real, as I know only too well having a son who suffers with that condition, also a nephew with teurets/adhd
lifes a bitch when they get started, but diet aint to blame as thats controlled very rigidly
I used to live on £1 a week at uni 2 years ago, and that's paying normal prices not wholesale, so 37p wholesale would be easy if JO could stop putting so many chuffing herbs in!
nope, it's because I spent my money on beer and ate homemade veg soup
