I dont care what anyone thinks of Jamie Oliver but you cant help admire his current crusade.
The shit that kids are fed in School and the funding available is a national disgrace. Ok I am a bit anal when it comes to nutrition but the problems health wise that are being created just makes me so angry.
My point is what on earth would you cook for 37p that would be edible and healthy?
Sorry for starting a serious post but Am I over reacting or do you good people feel the same
I agree wholeheartedly!! Recent research shows the effects of poor nutrition on kids behaviour, concentration and abilities. You only have to read some of the Omega-3 & 6 Oil "miracles" to see how poor diet affects the young.. (and old!)
Must admit I get a bit ranty on this subject - studied nutrition and all that years back etc...
Sorry - I am just being a smarty pants!
Polo
You are not being smarty pants. This is the way meals are costed per head in every kitchen - be it a restaurant, prison, school, hospital...
We often confuse the cost of food with the price of food. When we pay £5 for a burger, chips and cola at a hamburger place (no names mentioned), do we ever wonder what the actual food cost is? And how much of the £5 is pure profit?
Also let people not forget that it costs more to cook for a few people (as at home) than for a whole load of people. Furthermore at home we tend to go for convenience (e.g. buying precut and prewashed salads and vegs that cost an arm and a leg compared to heaps of the uncut, unwashed originals that require a bit more prep time).
Unfortunately I missed Jamie's programme last Wednesday. Think there was something else on another channel that caught my attention. But I wholeheartedly support any effort to re-educate people about food.
I also like Jamie, but I think that when his current programme is finished nutrition will again be ignored.
I don't think that it is the cooks fault.
I do however believe that it has to do with profit making, and the companys that hold the catering contracts for schools.
i had to laugh about that additive thats caused all those products to be taken off the shelf hasnt affected me in the slightest if its not fresh and its not green yellow or red i wont eat it they also use that additive in floor polish wtf , you are what you eat as they say and im soo not eating mr sheene have you seen him hes minging
Couldn't agree more with this thread.
Nutrition is a disgrace in this country.
Food scares would not affect anyone if we all ate good fresh produce.
Why eat so called convenience food when there is nothing faster than a baked potatoe , an omellete or a plate of pasta with a few fresh ingredients thrown in.
And no, fresh food is not expensive if you used markets and shop carefully.
I am no killjoy and I think the odd 'rubbish' meal is fine and dandy as long as it is an occasional treat

I think much of what Jamie Oliver does is to be admired. After all, he could just sit back & make ever greater piles of money, but instead of that he gets stuck in & works with young people to try & give them a future, in setting up his 15 restaurant. And now he is tackling the long overdue problem of school dinners. Good for him.
The senior dinner lady, as Jamie said, runs a very efficient kitchen & is clearly very well organised in providing large quantities of food at the right time each day. The fact that most of it is shit is not her fault, & she has clearly spent a long time working within that system, so to some extent she is a product of that system.
I love food, & enjoy cooking several meals a week using fresh ingredients. We've only seen one episode so far, & I will be very interested to see how that project progresses in the coming weeks.
Incidentally for what its worth there is a petition to sign on Jamies website to try and force some action out of the government
If you have a moment take a look
I am a dinner lady and work at a private school.
The kids at the school where i work are given a choice or hot or cold starter, pudding, bread and butter, every day something different and only serve chips one a week. The days they have a proper cooked dinner (meat and two veg) half the kids dont like it anyway and would rather have bread and butter, probaly because they dont get proper food at home. For some of the kids and teachers this is the only main meal of the day and half of them leave whats on their plates. Waste.

big business does not care what we eat as long as they are making big profits, the more they make the more their share holders are happy and the more money they can donate to the politcal parties for their campaigns. small people dont matter to politicians anymore as long as big business is happy and they can just tell people what it is they want to hear.
the reason we have food scares is that the farmers are having to feed the animals crap(literally) to beef them up so they can sell them on quicker to make a living.
Tescos made a profit of £2 billion last year, dont think they made it off of their organic range.
