I dont care what anyone thinks of Jamie Oliver but you cant help admire his current crusade.
The shit that kids are fed in School and the funding available is a national disgrace. Ok I am a bit anal when it comes to nutrition but the problems health wise that are being created just makes me so angry.
My point is what on earth would you cook for 37p that would be edible and healthy?
Sorry for starting a serious post but Am I over reacting or do you good people feel the same
I think that 37p/head budget is ridiculous.. but I don't know if this was just in that one school or if it's more widespread?
I could cook for that put it'd be a smart price pot noodle each lol
Thought the dinner lady was a bad example to set.. she obviously wasn't bothered by nutrition in her own life and didn't looked as if she'd ever done anything more than reheat stuff dunno

when its boiling down to the kids, I am pleased you are, our kids are OUR future, the future of our country, our world, we must give them the best possible start
I agree wholeheartedly!! Recent research shows the effects of poor nutrition on kids behaviour, concentration and abilities. You only have to read some of the Omega-3 & 6 Oil "miracles" to see how poor diet affects the young.. (and old!)
Must admit I get a bit ranty on this subject - studied nutrition and all that years back etc...

Wholewheat pasta (1 portion approx 8p)
Basil (free - grown in the garden)
Cheapo margarine - OK I am on a budget here and had to substitute the virgin olive oil (one spoon full approx 10p)
Salt and pepper (free... collected sackets from the Motorway Services)
Onion (approx 8p)
Tomatoe - free grown in the greenhouse.
Chopped herbs - free grown in the garden.
Cook the pasta in salted water, drain and stand to one side. Finely chop the basil, lots of it and mix with salt and maybe pepper and melted margarine to make what might kind of pass for a pesto. Mix pesto into the pasta. Chop onion and tomatoe and place over the pasta as a garnish along with a selection of your favourite herbs.
Total cost = 26p
Sorry - I am just being a smarty pants!
With you 110% Warwick. May I recommend 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser - one of the best books I have ever read .... it's all the bloody American's fault . mad
37p. I ask you. It's such an insult.
I've always liked Jamie. . . despite is annoying mannerisms. He's got the right idea and it's a shame more people don't see things his way.
Like I said in a previous thread, you really are what you eat. Who remembers kids getting ADT in the past? It's a fancy name for kids who are fed too much sugar and E numbers.
If people want to feed their children chemicals and tooth-rotting rubbish what do they expect? And how can kids learn without proper food in their bellies?
Okay I'm done.

OK, so maybe I'm not so ranty... ;)
(Totally agree with you though!!!)

You are not being smarty pants. This is the way meals are costed per head in every kitchen - be it a restaurant, prison, school, hospital...
We often confuse the cost of food with the price of food. When we pay £5 for a burger, chips and cola at a hamburger place (no names mentioned), do we ever wonder what the actual food cost is? And how much of the £5 is pure profit?
Also let people not forget that it costs more to cook for a few people (as at home) than for a whole load of people. Furthermore at home we tend to go for convenience (e.g. buying precut and prewashed salads and vegs that cost an arm and a leg compared to heaps of the uncut, unwashed originals that require a bit more prep time).
Unfortunately I missed Jamie's programme last Wednesday. Think there was something else on another channel that caught my attention. But I wholeheartedly support any effort to re-educate people about food.

Ooowwww, someone has their ranty pants on today! Better see what we can do to whip them off before the weekend! wink lol
I also like Jamie, but I think that when his current programme is finished nutrition will again be ignored.
I don't think that it is the cooks fault.
I do however believe that it has to do with profit making, and the companys that hold the catering contracts for schools.

ADT= Attention Deficit ?
I had a nephew who was hyperactive and drove his mom and everyone else mad. In one visit, he ripped up our garden watering system single-handedly, in a garden area that measured over 350 feet. When I visited my cousin at home I saw what he was being fed: snacks like cheetos, coloured cheese and coke. I warned my cousin about tartrazine (the food colouring) and she took my advice on board. Her little devil calmed down and became an exemplary kid.

if you wanna see how bad it can get - look to our brethren in the USA - ADD and ADDH are rife with ritallin being given out like smarties... Diet? it's more akin to force feeding geese for pate! Sadly, I see the UK sliding down the same route... Balanced diet, excercise and more water... Simple init?
EDIT: just to be clear, ADD & ADHD are real - not all caused by poor diet. But some kids will exhibit the same sysptoms on a poor diet...
i had to laugh about that additive thats caused all those products to be taken off the shelf hasnt affected me in the slightest if its not fresh and its not green yellow or red i wont eat it they also use that additive in floor polish wtf , you are what you eat as they say and im soo not eating mr sheene have you seen him hes minging
School kitchens buy in bulk which means reduced prices, so yes, there is no excuse for the crap they serve for 37p then charge for.
I'm a cheap-skate mum. I'm unemployed I have to be cheap. Our food budget is almost zero but we manage to stick to the heart foundation diet with it. (Though at times it's a loooooong stretch).
My middle son use to have school dinners on a Friday as a treat
 rotflmao (his request) so the youngest wanted school dinner treats too. But he can't because it's all pizza, twizzler, chips and shit!
Yet the government goes on about obesity in kids.
Which brings me round to cycling to school. The school doesn't allow cycling the school-run because they have no where to keep the bikes (in my day all schools had bicycle sheds) and no, they don't allow you to chain the bikes to the fence either. They're selling off a playing field they don't use anymore, but alas, there's no budget for a bike shed still.
They'd prefer we eat pizza and drive!

Know what you mean, I'm fine too, unless of course it's a lie on the tin of chopped tomatos in my cupboard, Ingredients: Tomatos.

What a ridiculous state of affairs. And the government claimed to be adopting a "joined-up-thinking" policy rolleyes . There is not much chance of many councils doing that either. Perhaps they are slightly biased by the money they can get for selling the playing field for housing. And once these facilities are gone, they are gone for ever.
What disturbs me is that when my kids friends come round to ours for a meal they look at the food I cook as if its from another planet. Obviously i know a lot of their parents and these are intelligent reasonably well off people feeding their children on ready meals and processed crap confused:
I cook fresh veg every day to try and compensate for the fact that I have to send the boys to School with a packed lunch as I wont let them eat the rubbish on offer. But trying to give them a good packed lunch with variety is very difficult. I worry about the amount of bread they eat in a week.
The fast food culture has a hell of a lot to answer for in my opinion
Couldn't agree more with this thread.
Nutrition is a disgrace in this country.
Food scares would not affect anyone if we all ate good fresh produce.
Why eat so called convenience food when there is nothing faster than a baked potatoe , an omellete or a plate of pasta with a few fresh ingredients thrown in.
And no, fresh food is not expensive if you used markets and shop carefully.
I am no killjoy and I think the odd 'rubbish' meal is fine and dandy as long as it is an occasional treat

I think much of what Jamie Oliver does is to be admired. After all, he could just sit back & make ever greater piles of money, but instead of that he gets stuck in & works with young people to try & give them a future, in setting up his 15 restaurant. And now he is tackling the long overdue problem of school dinners. Good for him.
The senior dinner lady, as Jamie said, runs a very efficient kitchen & is clearly very well organised in providing large quantities of food at the right time each day. The fact that most of it is shit is not her fault, & she has clearly spent a long time working within that system, so to some extent she is a product of that system.
I love food, & enjoy cooking several meals a week using fresh ingredients. We've only seen one episode so far, & I will be very interested to see how that project progresses in the coming weeks.
Incidentally for what its worth there is a petition to sign on Jamies website to try and force some action out of the government
If you have a moment take a look

That would be this petition then.

Been there, done that. biggrin
I am a dinner lady and work at a private school.
The kids at the school where i work are given a choice or hot or cold starter, pudding, bread and butter, every day something different and only serve chips one a week. The days they have a proper cooked dinner (meat and two veg) half the kids dont like it anyway and would rather have bread and butter, probaly because they dont get proper food at home. For some of the kids and teachers this is the only main meal of the day and half of them leave whats on their plates. Waste.

Thanks Marms Im shite at that sort of thing biggrin

Why, do you eat tarmac?no but the additive is in floor tarmac.
big business does not care what we eat as long as they are making big profits, the more they make the more their share holders are happy and the more money they can donate to the politcal parties for their campaigns. small people dont matter to politicians anymore as long as big business is happy and they can just tell people what it is they want to hear.
the reason we have food scares is that the farmers are having to feed the animals crap(literally) to beef them up so they can sell them on quicker to make a living.
Tescos made a profit of £2 billion last year, dont think they made it off of their organic range.
