I remember being mortally embarrassed about the restaurant scene! *cringe* But even worse, the scene that got me the most in that film was when heroine burst into the lap dancing club to drag her friend out... Mix of sleaziness, vulnerability and aggression - got me to the core.
For me the absolute best would have to be Flesh+Blood... There is something quite perverse about Verhoeven's films, everything I've seen of his did this to me - Total Recall, Showgirls, even Starship Troopers a little bit, haha. Of course the obvious reference here should have been Basic Instinct, but I haven't seen that one! Dunno how I managed to miss it.
Most sci-fi films do it for me - the Alien series, definitely, Blade Runner, the Matrix series! Then yes, thumbs up for thrillers, and some fantasy (Crouching Tiger! How good was that.) Would like to watch some of Peter Greenaway's films again, especially The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover.

9 1/2 weeks as a book was excellent, the movie didn't catch the psychology of it.
