remembering back to the regional debate as to what a barmcake / roll / tea cake is , ive also noticed the differance in our chippys . Southern chippy`s sell many types of fish , cod / haddock / skate / plaice etc but only one type of pie confused Up north ( well the chippy near us) sells cod n thats it ! but sells meat n potato / steak / chicken / cheese n onion / steak puddings / pork pies . This is only my personal obsevation so am i right ? and do chippys in the midlands have a equal selection of both ? SHOULD OUR CHIPPYS BE LIKE THIS , i think not , but not one single party in this election put forward a chippy reform bill . what do you all think . Dino
Bearing in mind i live on the Wigan border, a pie is not just a pie, there are many species out there, but alas only one fish, unless you want a fish pie confused
I too was bitterly disapointed at the lack of policy regarding regional fayre.
Damn them all, ime off to bury for a puddin lol
i've lived in essex, south yorks, manchester, devon and now south gloc and i have to say that fish and chips are the best up north.
however - pie and chips is just what it says - pie (of some indeterminate origin)
thats what makes pie and chips such good fun.
JJ
down south they have jellied eels instead of mushy peas
i know which on eid rather have
and it isnt eels

The best Fish & Chips I have ever had in my 42 years was in Whitecross Market(nearest tube Barbican). I did have mushy peas with them so that knocks the southern/northern theory into touch.
best chippie is in Silsdon ,yorkshire at bottom of cow and calf
being a southern ,generally ( bar some sea side chippies ) we get a rough deal down south
mind you in Glasgow you can get deep fried mars bars for 80p
northern chippys are better
bigger portions
fatter chips
My nearest chippy sells cod or haddock (I thought most did) and a variety of pies and pasties.
You can also choose from mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce (yum!) or baked beans to accompany your meal. I think they even have pickled eggs in a big jar on the counter.
The best fish n chips are to be found at the bottom of Church Street in Whitby ... can't remember the name of the place .. Eskside? Riverside?? Anyway, they only seem to open once a week and then there's a queue a mile long to get in.
Had my first Harry Ramsden's last year. I thought they were supposed to have this reputation for being the best but I really don't rate them at all.

Didnt realise you'd visited all southern chippys lol
My local Chippy is brill, won an award from Carlton TV for being one of the best in/around London. Sells everything (inc mushy peas!!), chips are gorg, not greasy, HUGE portions. Yes they also sell pies, spam fritters, sausage rolls etc etc etc.
BTW we have a Harry Ramsdens near us too, what a load of crap and the service is appalling!! confused
Is anyone familiar with the Yorkshire fishcake?? Minced fish sandwiched between two slices of potato then deep fried in batter?? Beats that 'orrid minced fish rissole thing fried in breadcrumbs that is mistakenly passed off as a fishcake....IMHO!!
Visit Sheffield...home of the Full Monty...and the proper fishcake!!
lol
the best fish and chips ive evr had is from york
mmmmmmmmm wicked

Trying to keep off the food threads ................... confused

Yep I know of yorkshire fishcake - the fishcake (down south) is what we call a rissole I think :?
Fish chips and mushy peas - fine one at the bottom of my road. Even the suvverners seem to like it but still can't get them on the chips and gravy!
Yum!!!

but do southern chippys have curry sauce and gravy (the ones i've been to haven't)
And one of the local chiipies to me does mushy pea fritters, mmmm i'm drooling thinking about them now.
Its down to the oil peeps. Its starts off new in London and spreads outwards and gets reused time and time again. Round about the Midlands and North, The West Country, Wales, its just about perfect. By the time it gets to Inverness and the Islands its seriously rancid and lost its muscle.

is it not called trenches (it burnt down a few summers ago)
i think it won best fish and chips in the country some time back.
better than being reccommended by carlton tv smile)
Just had to ask and see if anyone has ever ordered a Scone from a chippy? No prize but do you know what one is?
@lpha
i have lived in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Lincolnsire, Leicestershire, and Sussex. And can say without hesitation, that northern chippies are the best. Can't decide between Yorkshire (excellent fishcakes), and Lancashire (steak n kindey puds). I'm getting hungry just thinking about this!!
Now look what you've done !
I'm going to have to go to the Chippy :!:
Bloody salad can say in the fridge again tonight :!:
Anyone got a hungry rabbit confused:
And no I don't mean one that eats batteries.
biggrin :D :D
There's a great little chippy down here i go to...you couldn't ask for better chips!!..unfortunatly I'm not a great lover of fish!

Scottish chippies use different oil to our sassenach chippies, there's a different taste to it... also remember to ask for a fish supper and not fish 'n' chips when up north... you get more fish!
Watch out for the pizza crunch though...heart attack in batter springs to mind!

Actualy so does my local chippie, but then it is owned and run by the same people as the Chinese takeaway next door! Not the best chips, but the Chinese certainly know how to cook fish.
And now I'm hungry again. sad
we have a local chippy (OH BOY!!! do we) its called the cottage and even gets a write up in keith floyds cookery book. It comes highly recommended and you can buy fish of all sorts and in sizes you want with peas and homemade tartare. yummy!!! not a pie in sight hehehehe

Do they make steak n kidney puds? God I love Lancashire chippies!!
my local (in t' north) put spam fritters back on the menu recently, i tried one and realised why they took them off in the first place.
As for chippy's, i prefer the north, but when it comes to Cornis pasties, i love the ones from the traditional cornish co.... (is this a chain?) theres a beaut at wimbledon tube station, just the job for the journey back to Fulham as Im bored with the hotel menu.
Though the best pies/pasties ive had are fro Upmarket in Newcastle near Eldon Sq.

My local does oustanding spam fritters absolutely swimming in gravy, and it does a wet dream of a chips, cheese and gravy.
Im not a big fan of chip shop pies, though I do regard myself as a connoisseur in the pie area so I am fussy. At the moment i'm mostly feelin the love for Greggs roast chick and steakbakes.
