i've lived in essex, south yorks, manchester, devon and now south gloc and i have to say that fish and chips are the best up north.
however - pie and chips is just what it says - pie (of some indeterminate origin)
thats what makes pie and chips such good fun.
JJ
down south they have jellied eels instead of mushy peas
i know which on eid rather have
and it isnt eels
best chippie is in Silsdon ,yorkshire at bottom of cow and calf
being a southern ,generally ( bar some sea side chippies ) we get a rough deal down south
mind you in Glasgow you can get deep fried mars bars for 80p
northern chippys are better
bigger portions
fatter chips
My nearest chippy sells cod or haddock (I thought most did) and a variety of pies and pasties.
You can also choose from mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce (yum!) or baked beans to accompany your meal. I think they even have pickled eggs in a big jar on the counter.
The best fish n chips are to be found at the bottom of Church Street in Whitby ... can't remember the name of the place .. Eskside? Riverside?? Anyway, they only seem to open once a week and then there's a queue a mile long to get in.
Had my first Harry Ramsden's last year. I thought they were supposed to have this reputation for being the best but I really don't rate them at all.
the best fish and chips ive evr had is from york
mmmmmmmmm wicked
lou xxxx
but do southern chippys have curry sauce and gravy (the ones i've been to haven't)
And one of the local chiipies to me does mushy pea fritters, mmmm i'm drooling thinking about them now.
Its down to the oil peeps. Its starts off new in London and spreads outwards and gets reused time and time again. Round about the Midlands and North, The West Country, Wales, its just about perfect. By the time it gets to Inverness and the Islands its seriously rancid and lost its muscle.
Just had to ask and see if anyone has ever ordered a Scone from a chippy? No prize but do you know what one is?
@lpha
i have lived in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Lincolnsire, Leicestershire, and Sussex. And can say without hesitation, that northern chippies are the best. Can't decide between Yorkshire (excellent fishcakes), and Lancashire (steak n kindey puds). I'm getting hungry just thinking about this!!
There's a great little chippy down here i go to...you couldn't ask for better chips!!..unfortunatly I'm not a great lover of fish!
we have a local chippy (OH BOY!!! do we) its called the cottage and even gets a write up in keith floyds cookery book. It comes highly recommended and you can buy fish of all sorts and in sizes you want with peas and homemade tartare. yummy!!! not a pie in sight hehehehe
my local (in t' north) put spam fritters back on the menu recently, i tried one and realised why they took them off in the first place.
As for chippy's, i prefer the north, but when it comes to Cornis pasties, i love the ones from the traditional cornish co.... (is this a chain?) theres a beaut at wimbledon tube station, just the job for the journey back to Fulham as Im bored with the hotel menu.
Though the best pies/pasties ive had are fro Upmarket in Newcastle near Eldon Sq.
Oh and Vinegar Jones chippy in Bowness is sooooo goooood
staffordshire(home) has the best chippies, but now im on me own home cooking seems great again,
you cant get saveloy and chips up north... chip shops what dont sell saveloys.. grrrr
few weeks back i was in the fish and chip shop near the girlfriends house. i said you got any onion vinegar and she look at me like i was of my tits...
anyway fish and chips in teesside is minging..
but in grimsby they yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm with a y
the best i had in luton is in barton village.. people used to be queing all the way down the road for them.. that says alot... or says only chip shop in barton village
I never eat fish and chips - I want to live a long life...
