I know it's a policy at peak times like over Christmas and such like (used to house share with two Tesco managers so I had to get familiar with Tesco-speak rolleyes)
Not sure if is a general policy... but I shall enquire!
Yes I remember that too. But as with most things just a smoke screen to get you in there.
Still why should they care? As the biggest supermarket on the planet, making billions every minute, do not think it will bother them if a few customers leave their shop.
every little helps!

I thought Tesco just simply opened another store rolleyes
The staff at our local Tesco Superstore are the rudest I've come across. They'll step out in front of you as if you're not there. The internet shoppers charge around the place obstructing and pushing 'real' shoppers out of the way and the Customer Information desk staff are often surly.
The manager should be sacked.
At least most of the other supermarket chains try. Tesco is too big fer its boots methinks.
.
After 10pm you are luck to find a human cashier in my local store, you have to self scan, I think a human cashier comes back on duty at 7am or there abouts, if you need help with the self scanners, you have to go and look for someone.
It must cost them a fortune, in stuff that walks out of the door with out being scanned

Sounds exactly like the Tescos here.......and no matter when I ever shop there, half the shelves are empty!
Oh for the halcyon days of local butcher, baker et al....but we were all seduced by the convenience of the supermarkets sad
