Does anyone know the origin of the word "swinger", as in the noun used to describe happily promiscuous (but discerning, if that isn't a contradiction in terms confused ) people like me?
Yep, even tried Googling it, but to no avail.

could it perhaps come from the thought of people swinging both ways? ??
Swinging "uninhibited" dates from 1958; and swinger "person who is lively in an unrestrained way" is from 1965. Both had various other slang senses traceable to 1590s.

That implies bisexuality, and not all 'swingers' are comfortable with that - hey, it's individual choice, I wouldn't refuse a bj from Beckham, but I certainly wouldn't blow Prescott. lol
No, it's more generally to do with 'openly putting it about a bit'. But when was it first coined?

Thanks Les. One to add to my bookmarks. Uninhibited, eh? I like that one. Nowt more satisfying than removing ones inhibitions.

We were told once by a friend that he had hunted for the origin of the use oof the word swingers for people who indulge in polygamous relationships that it was adopted by the community after a priest publicallly condemned those who swap sexual partners as being no better than the apes that swing in the trees.

Then here's to being an ape!

Language is quite an open fluid thing so a words original meaning can bare little or no resemblence to its current use, case in point originaly your sinister side was your left side
