Is anyone else here a fan of live stand up comedy?
I love going to the Comedy Store and also flying up to Edinburgh for the Fringe each summer. Last year my favourite act was an Irish guy called Andrew Maxwell, brilliant set. Lately I've been getting into Brendon Burns. An Auzzie nutcase who reminds me of Bill Hicks.
i love stand up. we have a comedy festival through feb in leicester all the big names come to town. this year was extra special for me being as a transsexual won the award for best newbie . apparently she was hillarious, i will be deffo looking out for her on the jongerleurs line up. i love that place biggrin

What's her name?
One of the last events was the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year competition.
On Saturday night, Debra Jane Appelby, a 38-year-old IT contractor from London, was declared the winner.
Debra - who was born a man - took up stand-up comedy just 18 months ago.
Most people in a supportive audience that packed the Y Theatre, Leicester, had no idea of her background as they applauded her £1,000 victory.
Her intelligent and original routine took in everything from overeating to psychos, via B &Q, and though, arguably, at least one other comic on the night had a better stage presence, no-one could touch her material.
Thanks for that Rachel. I'll look out for her.

Hmmm. He's funny but not my sort of thing.
I prefer my comedy a little more edgy

Eddie Izzard and nothing else.

He's great but please open your mind and try some other new stand ups.

He does. He's got a contract with the Comedy Store and plays there fairly frequently. I interviewed him back in 2003 and he's a genuinely lovely man with absolutely no pretensions. The feature was never going to be a muck-raking exercise but I really couldn't find any fault with him.

pbbbbbbbbbb, was just kidding don't get all stuck up.
if I listed my favorite new young stand-ups it would only be americans, as I haven't been here all that long and don't really go to comedy clubs.
Peter Kay is alright.
***EDIT oops. sorry, that's K-a-y-e... see, told you I didn't know anything...
When I was a student I worked in a comedy club in North London, and met Lee Evans and Jenny Eclair, when they were starting out on the circuit. That woman is so underrated. Very funny, clever lady.
My favourites at the time were Two Fat Ladies What Sing - not sure what ever happened to them but they were very very good. They did a great version of 'You make me feel like a Natural....Yoghurt'as opposed to the hit by Aretha Franklin...
You cant beat stand-up for belly laughs and a guaranteed good night out. Peter Kaye is just wonderful, saw him in London, but missed half the jokes cos I was laughing so much. Eddie Izzard is also brilliant. Whenever I hear a cat purr I think of his drilling behind the sofa sketch. You had to be there......
Ricky Gervais' The Animalsis worth a watch. But dont do what I did and watch it with your mother. confused

I've met Jenny and I agree. A very talented woman.
Weve had some really great times at Jongleurs in Oxford , last time we were there a comic picked on me cos I was at the front and started askin me loads of questions about my kids . I was a little sensitive about the subject at the time ( being seperated ) and after about the third question my face must have showed my mood because he simply stopped dead held his hands up and moved on very quickly LOL .
However aside from the odd miserble bastard like me its a great venue.
My vote would go to Roy Chubby Brown.
The funniest thing is the first few rows are always full of pensioners lol
